Assignment 3: Diversity in Organizations

Management practices differ, depending on the diversity within the organization. In this assignment, you will research the demographics for your area or city and apply those demographics to business operations.

This assignment has two parts. Complete both parts.

Part I

Research the population demographics in the area or state where you live. (Use Cleveland, Ohio)

Use the following guidelines for your research:

• Look up government reference sites such as the US Census Bureau

  http://www.census.gov/.

• Conduct an Internet search using keywords such as ‘demographics for YourCity.’

Complete the following:

• List and describe the population demographics. Be sure to cover gender, race, national origin, age, disability, and religion. Create a table to present this information.
• Explain how these demographics determine or affect the cultural dynamics where you live. For example, types of restaurants, specialty grocery items, entertainment offerings, public housing requirements, and education offerings.

Part II

• Choose a business in your area and explain how the cultural dynamics might affect the way that business would conduct business. (Use Quicken Loans)
• Explain the considerations for leaders of the business you chose in managing the cultural diversity in terms of customer service and employee expectations. For example, one consideration might be to have customer service agents who speak Spanish in an area where there is a large Spanish-speaking population.

Give reasons in support. Be sure to apply relevant management principles.

Write a 1–2-page report in Word format. Include the table with the population demographics. Apply APA standards to citation of sources. Use the following file naming convention: LastnameFirstInitial_M1_A3.doc. For example, if your name is John Smith, your document will be named SmithJ_M1_A3.doc.

By Wednesday, October 7, 2015, deliver your assignment to the M1: Assignment 3 Dropbox.

Assignment: Each individual team member will identify and assess 3 competitors of CISCO HEALTH TECHNOLOGY in the recommended country (MEXICO), including at least one global competitor and one local competitor. Each individual paper will conclude with an assessment of  the competitive advantages of the client company (comparing client strengths and weaknesses with competitors’ strengths and weaknesses). Note that not all Strengths of a company are competitive advantages, as competitors may have those same or similar strengths.  You are looking for those very few strengths or assets that will give your company a competitive edge.   You will then recommend a competitive strategy that will leverage  the client firm’s competitive advantages  and/or  mitigate its  competitive weaknesses.

 

Using the work the team has already done, each individual will begin this paper with introductory sections already completed by the team and to be used as standard framework for all stratgy project papers:  the rationale for selecting this country, description of the company, its product/service, the target buyer and market size in the selected country.  This is the Opportunity statement for your client’s product/service.  Individual work  will then constitute the body of the paper, which will consist of  your own (individual)  Threat assessment specific to the competitors you are analyzing in this country. You will not yet include the other OT factors in this country, as identified in your PESTEL analysis last week.  The full threat analysis will be included with the team’s SWOT analysis next week.

The body of this paper (competitor assessment without the introductory sections)  should be approximately 10 pages double spaced. In addition, include a one page Executive summary

Paper review

A paper review is a short essay (3-4) pages single space reporting what you have learned from reading a research paper. Writing reviews for the papers you have read is a great way to sharpen your paper reading skills such a review is typically structured in three sections:

1. Summary

Give a brief summary of the work in your own words. This section demonstrates your understanding of the paper, and as such it should answer the following question:

• What is the research problem the paper attempts to address?
• What are the claimed contributions of the paper?
• How do the authors substantiate their claims?
• What are the conclusions?
• It is imperative that you use your own word to summarize the paper .another way to think of it is that you are writing an alternative, elaborate abstract for the paper.

2. Evaluation

Evaluate the work by answering the following question:

• Is the research problem significant?
• Are the contributions significant?
• Are the claims valid?

Learn to be fair: point out the strengths and weaknesses of the work. if you are reading that has been published for a while , make sure you are reading the paper in the right historical context : what seems to be obvious now might have been ground- breaking then.

3. Synthesis:

Generate any interesting thoughts you have on the work by consulting the following questions:

• What is the crux of the research problem?
• What are some alternative approaches to address the research problem?
• What is a better way to substantiate the claim of the authors?
• What is a good argument against the case made by the authors?
• How can the research results be improved?
• Can the research results be applied to another context?
• What are the open problems raised by this work?
