Why Be Moral?

After reading this chapter, it should be clear that not all philosophers agree on “why” we ought to be moral, but regardless of whether it is a matter of principles or virtues, they can agree that mortality is necessary for a functioning society.

In book 2 of his Republic (2.359a–2.360d), Plato has one of his characters relate a story about a mythical Ring of Gynges. When a shepherd finds and wears the magical, mythical ring, he discovers that he can adjust it on his hand and become invisible. With this new gift of invisibility, he eventually seduces the queen, murders the king, and becomes the king himself. The point of the myth is that if any person believes he can get away with immoral behavior, he will behave immorally. It is only the awareness of others around us that makes a person choose to be moral.

In a well-developed essay, provide an argument which addresses for the following questions:

What relationship, if any, is there between “doing good” and “being good”?
Would it be possible for a person to be perfectly good and yet cause harm to innocent people?
Could a person be wicked even if he or she never caused any harm at all?
If a person does good things for other people but does them for bad reasons (such as fame, wealth, or even just the selfish desire to feel good about himself), why or why not do the wrong reasons or motivations negate the good he has done?
Could someone be a morally good person but not enjoy the Good Life? (You will ned to define what you mean by the “Good Life.”)

Decision Making with Managerial Accounting

Due to varying business characteristics, the managerial accounting techniques applied in each business may differ. For example, a business in the start-up phase may rely heavily upon budgeting and capital investment techniques; whereas, a business in the mature/maintaining phase may rely heavily upon cost management and quality control. Ultimately, the techniques used by management should assist the business in achieving its short-term and long-term goals through effective decision-making.

For your Final Paper, you will analyze the role of managerial accounting in two parts. Part I will provide a general overview of managerial accounting. Part II will provide examples of how managerial accounting theories and principles are applied in the business world. You may find it helpful to reflect upon your own professional experiences for examples.

Read the Ace Heating and Cooling scenario and answer the following questions:

Under UCC 2-302, who has the best chance of getting out of the contract due to unconsionability?
The symbol for justice features a woman wearing a blindfold illustrating that the law should be applied the same way regardless of who the parties are. Does the UCC rule seem to contradict this? Which approach do you think is more ethical?

The successful implementation of change through the use of Project Management has become vital to most businesses and organizations to the point if an organization fails to keep up with the pace of change it can have catastrophic results to all the organization’s stakeholders. Take some time to review current events and identify a scenario where an organization’s attempt to implement change failed and the consequences of that failure. For example, perhaps a business attempted to implement a new product, or use a new technology and was not able to successfully implement the change, or a governmental agency that failed to deliver on a service.

Describe in detail what the organization attempted to implement and the impact this failure caused to the various stakeholders in the scenario.

As part of your reply post to another student offer detailed suggestions as to what could have been done to prevent or minimize the failure of this implementation.

Focus of the Final Paper

This paper will be an application of the leadership practice concepts learned throughout your degree program to a real-world situation. In a 7 page paper, discuss one significant organizational challenge, within your organization or an organization you have researched. How did the leadership of the organization address the challenge? Could it have been done more effectively? How would you recommend future leaders strategically plan to avoid encountering a similar challenge within their own organizations? Provide suggestions for overcoming the challenge based on your own research and concepts presented in your degree program and grounded in leadership theory. Some challenges to consider would be (but are not limited to): an ethical challenge, a challenge occurring because of changes in the economy, a globalization challenge, or a challenge of organizational culture. Please request instructor approval of the challenge you would like to use as your focus before beginning your paper.

The Final Paper should, at minimum, include:

1. A description of the organization and its primary stakeholders. Include the vision and mission statement if they are available to the public, and the code of ethics if the company has one (if it is long, an excerpt or description is an acceptable alternative).

2. A detailed analysis of one challenge facing the leadership of the organization.

3. A strategy for overcoming the challenge based on outside research, the textbook, and concepts discussed during your degree studies.
