What is “classical liberalism”? Include its perspective on (a) the proper role of government and (b) the best way to structure an economy, and why.

Your task is to respond to the questions below by weaving together your understanding of ideas and evidence from the readings into a coherent, well-reasoned essay.

FORMAT: Your total responses to both questions should be 8 to 9 pages typed, double spaced.

GRADING CRITERIA:

 Knowledge of the texts and of the ideas we’ve discussed in class (reference to the lectures alone is not sufficient)

 Quality of the arguments

 Evidence of having intellectually engaged the topics and ideas

 Grammar, spelling, style and organization

As I read your responses, I’ll be looking for evidence that you read the assigned works (meaning the actual articles, not just the editors’ summaries of the articles). You should put the ideas from the readings in your own words except when you are including a direct quote – and when you include a direct quote, make sure that you use quotation marks, clearly identify which reading you are quoting from, and include the page number. Unmarked quoted passages are a misrepresentation of another’s words as your own. I encourage you to include direct quotes. However, don’t turn your essay into one long string of quotes.

QUESTIONS:

1) What is “classical liberalism”? Include its perspective on (a) the proper role of government and (b) the best way to structure an economy, and why.

2) One of the most important features of contemporary politics is what James Antle calls the “conservative crack-up.” Although they overlap on some issues, the major varieties of conservatism sharply disagree on others. We have discussed traditional conservatism (Burke, Oakeshott, Kirk), neoconservatism (Reagan, Kristol), and libertarianism (Allen, Mill). A. For each type of conservatism: (a) What are the main issues emphasized?

(b) What is the proper role of government in social life?

B. Finally, what are the most important topics on which contemporary conservatives are likely to disagree?

Discuss the basis of a breach of contract claim by College against Contractors, any potential damages College could claim and the likely outcome of a lawsuit.

Project

Fact Scenario: Contractors, Inc. contracted with College to build a 20-room, 2 story classroom building, constructed of gray bricks, and according to architectural specifications provided by College. The building is to be located on campus at the corner of Campus Way and Academic Avenue at a contract cost of $5,000,000, and to be completed by August 1, 2013. This August 1 deadline would give College just enough time to move into the building and prepare the inside for classes to begin August 14. College informed Contractors that time was of the essence and that this is a tight timeline for moving into the new building.

The valid, written contract read, in part, as follows.

CONTRACT

We, the undersigned, party of the first part, hereinafter College, and party of the second part, hereinafter Contractors, Inc. hereby agree to the following:

1) Contractors, Inc. will build a 20-room, 2-story classroom building constructed of gray bricks, at the corner of Campus Way and Academic Avenue, in accordance with the architectural specifications stipulated by College and attached hereto and in compliance with Maryland building codes and regulations for new construction;

2) Contractors, Inc. will complete the construction project at a total cost of $5,000,000, inclusive;

3) Contractors, Inc. will complete the construction project not later than August 1, 2013. Time is of the essence.

College will pay Contractors, Inc. for the completed project, the sum of $5,000,000 not later than August 7, 2013.

A. On May 28, 2013, after the construction was more than half completed, the cost of bricks used for construction of the building increased substantially in the marketplace so that Contractors could no longer construct the building for $5,000,000. Contractors told College that it would need an additional $250,000 to complete the building using gray bricks on the exterior. College agreed to modify the original contract to increase the construction costs by $250,000, bringing the total cost of the project to $5,250,000.

College and Contractors drew up the following contract modification as an addendum to the original contract:

CONTRACT ADDENDUM

We, the undersigned, party of the first part, hereinafter College, and party of the second part, hereinafter Contractors, Inc. hereby agree to the following modification to the original agreement:

1) In addition to the contractual agreed upon cost of $5,000,000, College will pay Contractors, Inc. an additional $250,000 to build a 20-room, 2-story classroom building constructed of gray bricks, at the corner of Campus Way and Academic Avenue;

2) College will pay Contractors, Inc. for the completed project, the sum of $5,250,000 not later than August 7, 2013;

3) This modification does not in any way change any other terms of the original contract (attached hereto).

After the contract modification, Contractors continued to work on the building but did not meet the August 1 completion deadline. The building was completed on August 21, 2013.

In the meantime, fall semester classes began at College on August 14, making it necessary for College to lease classroom space from August 14-September 4, 2013. College necessarily had to hold classes in the leased space for 3 weeks until September 4 because it took 2 weeks (from August 21) for College to move into the new building and prepare it for classes. The lease costs were $5,000 per week, for a total of $15,000 for 3 weeks.

College paid Contractors $5,000,000 on September 4, but refused to pay the additional $250,000. College filed suit against Contractors for breach of contract.

Contractors countersued College for breach of contract.

Describe (3) ways that global demographic changes and increasing cultural diversity in the workplace could affect the way that Oceana Air manages its workforce.

Mission Statement:

“The low fare airline that makes travel easier for its customers through innovative thinking, superior service and a willingness to change the status quo. Oceana Air is the un-airline airline.”

Vision & Value

Mr. Kyle Stein, CEO of Oceana Air, firmly believes in the future success of his aviation organization. Recently, he sat down with Chuck Wells, a reporter with Airline Times magazine, to discuss his vision and goals for the up-and-coming innovative organization.

“The same values and principles that guided the early years of Oceana Air are the ones that have forged our current – and – future success: a strong spirit of excitement about growth and new opportunities; an appreciation of the creative challenge of working in an environment where cost-consciousness, efficiency, and maximum productivity are paramount, determination to succeed, even in the face of incredible obstacles; and a strong sense of value of providing excellent service to our partners, passengers, employees, and shareholders.”

Mr. Stein clearly believes in the knowledge, skills and abilities of his workforce. As he mentioned, “Although Oceana Air is a company made up of people from a wide range of backgrounds, experiences, and cultures, anyone who values teamwork, loves new challenges, and possesses an inner drive to succeed is always welcome on the OA team. Everyone at OA is of equal importance. The work of the person loading baggage on the ramp is of equal worth to the work of the captain in the cockpit. The clerical work of processing invoices is as important as the work of a station supervisor. We have no special groups. There are no unimportant positions. Every job is vital to the continued success of OA, because working together there is nothing we cannot do.”

The airline recently announced that it is expanding operations into several new locations (Tampa, Houston, Atlanta, Paris and London). Each of these domestic and international stations is critical to the success of the organization.

Assignment:

As the HR Manager for Oceana Air, you have been tasked to develop an HR business strategy plan that aligns with the overall organizational analysis provided by Mr. Stein and which links with the business philosophy of innovation and creativity in order to remain competitive in the aviation industry. You will need to consider the following as you write your proposed HR business plan:

1. Describe (3) ways that global demographic changes and increasing cultural diversity in the workplace could affect the way that Oceana Air manages its workforce.

2. Based upon your perception and experience, identify (3) factors and outline (3) possible solutions Oceana Air could implement to ensure a cohesive and competitive work environment. Consider the legal implications to the workforce.

3. Analyze (3) issues associated with an Oceana Air Onboarding program that is considered a critical part of a successful recruitment and retention plan.

· NOTE: Provide example(s) to support your selections.

· NOTE: Use at least three (3) quality academic resources in this assignment. Attention: Wikipedia and other Websites do not qualify as academic resources.

Your assignment in this module is to submit your week long Recycling Journal, along with an analysis of your recycling efforts and an examination of the recycling process.

Assignment 2: Recycling, Reducing, and Reusing

In the Working Ahead section in Modules 1, 2, and 3, you were informed to collect items to be recycled and log a journal of these items. You were also instructed to select either Module 2 or Module 3 to collect these items.

Your assignment in this module is to submit your week long Recycling Journal, along with an analysis of your recycling efforts and an examination of the recycling process.

Be sure to examine what you have recycled in your chosen week and estimate how many grocery sacks of material you recycled—try to estimate the size. Results showing who recycled the most material will be posted by your facilitator in Module 5.

For this assignment, complete the following:

Part 1

Review your Recycling Journal for the week you selected. Write a report that covers the next two parts of this assignment.

Part 2

Based on what you identified as recyclable in one week and using this data, estimate how much garbage your entire locality or city could prevent sending to the landfill. Include the following:

What is the total population of your community? You may use reliable Internet resources to identify this information.
If everyone in your community recycled as much trash as you did for one week, how much garbage could your area recycle? To calculate this number, you can use your number and multiply it by the number of people in your community.
How much trash could your community save in a year? To calculate this number, multiply the weekly estimate for your community by the number of weeks in a year.
Do you think your community recycles enough? How can the US Government place more importance on recycling?
The city used for this assignment is CLEVELAND, OHIO

Part 3

Examine the process of recycling. Include the following:

Explain how recycled material is reused.
Describe what happens to recycled cans, bottles, and newspapers after they go to the recycling bin.
Examine the impact you have on creating renewed resources from these recycled items.

Support your statements with appropriate examples and scholarly references.

Write a 4–5-page report in Word format. Submit the report, along with your recycling journal. Apply APA standards to citation of sources. Use the following file naming convention: LastnameFirstInitial_M4_A2.doc.

By Wednesday, September 23, 2015, submit the report, along with your recycling journal to the M4: Assignment 2 Dropbox.
