This paper introduces the idea of “Stabilization Wedges” as an approach to stop the growth of carbon emissions to enable stabilization at levels close to those present, and eventually allow reduction reduction to sustainable levels. Stabilization conceptually means achieving a “flat” trajectory of fossil fuel emissions at 7 GtC/year, which is significantly lower than the expected “Business as Usual” trajectory that is expected to grow to 14 GtC per year in the next 50 years. A stabilization wedge then represents the development of a technology that will decrease the growth of emissions in the next 50 years of about 1GtC per year, with the implementation of about seven stabilization wedges needed. An example of a stabilization wedge is the implementation of Carbon Capture and Storage at about 800 GW coal fired power plants. This paper relates to my chosen topic in that it describes an approach to decreasing the impact of the energy system on climate change.
