Hi this is a discussion that I have to replay for it is regarding to theories i will put the instructor post and my peers post with their name. I want you to replay to the instructor separately and the peers response all together, please mention their name in the post.
Here are the posts,
1- The instructor post:
“”Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.”
-Martin Luther King Jr., 16 April 1963, Birmingham, AL
Make sure you tie MLK’s statement to lectures, such as Structural-Functional and Conflict theory.
2- Peers post,
-Mark “Martin Luther King Jr.’s statement regarding injustice and mutuality illustrates the shortcomings of the structural-functional paradigm. The paradigm includes a series of assumptions such as (1) societies strive toward equilibrium; (2) human beings are not created equal but rather everyone gets what he/she deserves and (3) institutions are distinct and therefore should be studied individually. These assumptions were a product of the time during which the theory was introduced and grew in importance. However, structural-functional theory does not account for the social change advocated for in the 1960s by MLK and other activists nor does the theory explain structural contradictions and conflict. Does the structural-functional theory have any applicability today? If so, please provide an example of this applicability”.
-Albert “From my understanding, structural-functional theory sees societies as a complex network that works together in order to obtain stability.
To answer Mohamed’s question, I think part of this theory is applied today.
For example, nowadays most of the people get what he/she deserves. Most likely if you worked hard and got high degrees you will get an excellent job with better life standards.
On the other hand if you did not work as hard as the other you will not be able to get the perfect job.
In some cases this is not true 0, because some people have connections which allow them to get what they want easily without doing any work. It would allow them to get what they want based on their origins.
It is true that there are a lot of thing that shows how unequal our society is, but these things are decreasing, and I think we are much closer to the point of equality than before”.
– Heidi “I agree with Ahmed when he mentioned that some people have good connections that make them obtain better jobs than they deserve. However, I disagree about that we are moving toward equality, because I believe that inequality is caused and maintained by the powerful and majority groups of people in the society. Also, only the people within these groups are benefited from it. So, the minorities are the victims in this area. Therefore, society is an area of conflict. As Gerhard Lenski thinks “Inequality depends on who owns the subsistence technology throughout history — the tools” So, these powerful people are the one who will be controlling the equality in a society. The developments of the societies increase the inequality rate. I think when people were hunters they lived in a more equal society than now, because of the simple lifestyle they had.
