You are required to write a commentary (minimum length: 3000 words; there is no maximum length) on the questions below. Specifically, you are required to answer the following questions in essay format (with an introduction and a conclusion), not point form. Since it is an essay, there should be a unifying theme which connects the answers. Avoid significant overlap between answers. Grammar, spelling, and organization will be marked. You are also required to use and analyze substantial quotes (quotes with more than 4 lines) from all of the relevant readings from the course text in order to demonstrate knowledge of the readings. Specifically, each question requires a minimum of two quotes (at least four lines per quote) from the appropriate readings in the course text (unless otherwise specified). If there are no substantial quotes, a mark of zero will be given. NOTES TO THE WRITER: 1. The requirement is quoting (using the actual author’s words) and then write comments about these quotes. The last paper I lost points (25%) because the quotes were paraphrased. Even though it does not make sense, it is what the professor is asking: “actual quote” + commentaries about the quote. 2. There are no needs for extra citations besides the 7 articles that I will provide in PDF (like I did last time). THEME: Is a democratic regime necessarily the same as a liberal regime? QUESTIONS: 1. According to Pogge, why are democratic nations historically reluctant to advance the liberal cause of human rights on a global scale? Provide two reasons (with at least two quotes from Pogge). 2. Explain what Williams means by hate speech. Then discuss two reasons why Mill would oppose laws against this type of speech (two quotes from Williams and two from Mill). 3. According to Taylor and Mill, why can only a liberal (not merely democratic) regime advance the well-being of women? Discuss two ways (with at least two quotes from Taylor and Mill). 4. According to Sen, what is the difference between the liberal idea of reason and the politics of group solidarity? Discuss two differences (with at least two quotes from Sen). 5. Is a multicultural society the same as a liberal (Millian) society? Discuss two differences between Raz and Mill on what counts as a legitimate form of liberalism (with at least two quotes from Raz and two from Mill).
