Book reviews should include and will be graded based upon:
1) Information necessary to direct the reader to the book, such as author, title,
place of publication, publisher, and date of publication. (10 points)
2) The substance of the book: With what problem does the author deal? What
thesis does he set forth in relation to this problem? How does he develop this
thesis or theme and what conclusions does he reach as a result of his research? Is
the thesis that he has set out to test (or prove) valid in light of his conclusion? (In
other words, provide your reader with the essence of the work, not a blow by blow
account of its contents.) (35 ponits)
3) A critique of the book: Do you feel that the book is significant in terms of the
problem confronted and the conclusions reached? Does the author present and deal
with the problem in a scholarly fashion, i.e., are his conclusions valid in light of
the evidence at hand; are his presentation and conclusions colored by a bias of any
type? Is it readable? Does the book appear to have
been intended for the mature scholar, the student, or the general public? Would
you recommend the book to others? Why or why not? How has the book been
reviewed by other scholars? (35 points)
4) Appropriate college level writing including grammar and style. Students should
seek assistance from the student tutoring program at their campus to assist with
prewriting, organizing and editing their papers before submission.

sure to quote and footnote any ideas or phrases that are not entirely composed by you to
