Requirements: The paper should be 1500-1800 words, double spaced pages, 12pt Times New Roman font, with one-inch margins on all sides. You should write on one of the two prompts described below. Your essay should include at least three bibliographic sources, of which two must be peer- reviewed articles or book-length studies. Each of these sources must be cited at least once in the body of the essay. For purposes of this essay, online encyclopedias (including Wikipedia) cannot be cited. – Citations should follow the guidelines of the Chicago Manual of Style. Prompt: The history of a religious tradition is a rich and vibrant tapestry of key people and movements that left their mark on the overall shape and outlook of that religion both in the past and in the modern context. Below is a list of such key people and movements that played significant roles in the development of the major religions we have studied. For this prompt, choose Huineng (Buddhism, Zen Master) from this list and discuss his impact on the historical development of the tradition to which he/she belongs. Your discussion may deal with questions such as the reformulation of doctrines, the foundation of new practices and/or institutions, the introduction of new concepts and/or socio-political formations, and critiques of or departures from received traditions. Your discussion should also take account of the cultural, historical, political, and religious contexts with which these figures identified and within which they functioned. In the course of your paper, you should relate the impacts of these people or movements to at least three of Smarts dimensions. You should not do this by listing a one to one correspondence with Smarts dimensions (e.g. this persons new way of praying is just like the ritualistic dimension). Rather, you should use Smarts dimensions as a guide that enables you to think about the various ways in which a given religion has been transformed by the figure you have chosen to write about.
