The first thing is finding what type of leadership works for each person. Some employees are very open about what they want a more open, more personal leader to employee relationship. Other employees know and understand their position within the company and what their part is in the future of the company. Unlike the previous employee description, these particular individuals do not socialize, do not want the literal pat on the back, they just work. Adaptive leadership is figuring out what leadership style works best for each employee. A good leader is that that can bring a group of individuals together and help them excel at their job, bring out the best job performance and accomplish the goal which is to complete the assignment. There are three thing that a leader needs to understand to be successful at navigating adaptive leadership. First, authority considerations, knowing that a person in a position of authority is not necessarily a leader. Second, technical and adaptive problem solving, the person that is in charge does not always have the solution, and in adaptive, to look for the solution outside of the standard operating procedures. Finally, with challenging tasks there is stress, with a good diverse (open vs non-social personalities as discussed above) if each feels a sense of safety in the group the stress will be less likely to get out of hand creating failure in the task. Table 9.4 Type1- problem and solution to the problem are straight-forward. The person that has authority is the leader. Type2- the problem is clear, how the problem will be fixed unknown. There does not seem to one person in charge. To solve this problem, this team will have to go outside the box. Will need to think differently. Type 3- This team needs to figure out what the problem is, then figure out the solution. There is no one person with the authority.
