It is believed that under adaptive leadership, it is not enough for the main leader of a group to adapt to changes or new challenges; rather it is imperative for every single member to be challenged with adapting in new and challenging ways in order to grow and overcome obstacles. One key element of this type of leadership is that it is is not a passive form, but an active form of leadership; the act of constantly ensuring members are attempting to adapt takes the direction of an active leader not one who is just there in the background. As the leader employing this type of leadership you may run into a bit of pushback from people in the ground due to them being put into situations that they are not used to and/or do not feel particularly comfortable with when first starting out. Change can be hard at times, and this leadership style is one of constant change. Under adaptive leadership leaders will use both their formal authority (being their official position, status, rank, etc) as well as their informal authority in order to create the changes they believe are needed. In order to do this, leaders following this style (like many other leadership styles) must have a grasp of the vision that they have as an leader as well as for the organization itself; it is with this vision that they can see the best ways to get their followers to adapt. Adaptive leadership is split between both technical (easily solved problems, handled by knowledge, etc) and adaptive challenges (where problems are new and or require more than the usual skills). Knowing these two types of challenges will help leaders see how to handle different situations as they come about. Leaders must also acknowledge that problems and challenges may also fall into both of these categories at the same time. In order to help identify what type of classification a particular scenario would fall under, table 9.4 was created. It is an easy to follow chart that you may use to aid in seeing what type of situation you are experiencing and the methods that are recommended to employ.”
