How do you write a research paper?You start with scholarly research about a subject then synthesize important information together into an organized essay that makes an historical argument about the subject. To decide what information is important, you have to narrow down your topic. The American Revolution is too big of a topic. Choose something more specific, like the Response of African-Americans to the Revolution. Another example: George Washington is too big of a subject. Narrow it down to how George Washington shaped the presidency, or how Washington reflected (or failed to reflect) the ideals of the Revolution. Your secondary sources should also be as specific as possible to your topic. Good sources will be a good example of what a research paper should be: note their structure, tone, how they use evidence and citations, their arguments, and how they back them up.Also note the focus of your secondary sources. A research paper doesnt just tell what happened, it makes an argument about your subject, summarized in a thesis. A research paper has an intro, body and conclusion, all tied together by your thesis.A sample research paper can be found at both of these sites:

You must have a minimum of four sources for this paper (more are recommended). -At least one of your sources must be a primary source from The American Spirit.
-At least two of your sources must be academic works written by historians and that have references.
-No Encyclopedia sites, this means no wikipedia!
Any other sources are fine. Websites are fine but be discerning, these are generally not academic sources, and I will be grading you on the quality of your sources. You are required to quote from each of your sources at least once.
Be sure to include footnotes, endnotes or parenthetical references and include a bibliography.
Cite your sources in the Chicago style (as in the sample research papers linked to above).
