In writing final papers, students should take the role of a consultant to the organization. Their objective is to identify the key issue(s), assess the situation, then create and defend recommendations to the organization. The paper should be addressing issues around the key topics of the course: marketing, strategy, finance, operations, or organizational structure/relations. Outline of the paper I. Executive Summary (~-1 pg): Summary of paper focused on recommendations II. Background (~2-3 pgs): Summary of the key facts of the case. What is happening? III. The Critical Issue(s): Clear statement of the problem(s) the case illuminates that your paper addresses. Reader should be able to quickly find it as a first sentence in a paragraph. The rest of the paragraph can explain the issue more fully IV. Analysis (~3-4 pgs): When appropriate, students should use frameworks from class to guide their analysis. V. Recommendations (~3-4 pgs): Answer the question Now What? Based on your analysis and, importantly, the implications, what should the organization do to address the Critical Issue(s)? Each paragraph should state a recommendation then explain how it should be implemented. VI. Summary (~ pg) What do you want the reader to remember? Likely similar to Executive Summary * 1. No need to use citations or a bibliography for what is in the case. 2. Citations are needed for the results of external research 3. External research should not be needed and, in fact, is not encouraged. In particular, do note use external research as a substitute for original thought. 4. First person writing is not preferred. Avoid expressions like I think, In my opinion, etc. To best advocate for a course of action, the writer should not appear unsure or equivocate. 5. No need for an exciting title but no problem if one is used 6. Headings for each sections are helpful but not required 7. Only include recommendations in the Recommendations section. The reader wants a concise list of what she or he should do. Each paragraph in the Recommendations section should state a recommendation and then explain how to implement it. Justification is distracting in the Recommendations section. The arguments for a recommendation belong in the Analysis section, (Analysis section explains why Recommendations section explains what to do & how to do it.)
