Writing TipsWriting is thinking! During the process of writing you are thinking and developing ideas that support your argument. Because writing is thinking, this means the first draft of your paper is not going to be perfect. Writing multiple drafts is important. By writing multiple drafts you can improve your argument and pay attention to the structure of your paper. Getting started early will help you revise because it will allow for some distance between you and your work. With distance you can usually revise your paper better.
Think of it this way, the first draft is for you (it helps you articulate your ideas to yourself). Some questions to ask yourself include: What is my thesis? What am I trying to say and how do I support what I am trying to say? Is my analysis/ evidence strong enough?
With subsequent drafts you can improve your writing with your reader in mind. Ask yourself, do I have an introduction? Does my introduction give my reader enough information to follow my argument to the end? (for example, is there clear and strong thesis? Is there a roadmap?) What is the structure to my paper? Is my paper structured in a way that flows and best unpacks my thesis? Do I have a conclusion? Does my conclusion summarize my argument?
Before handing in your research paper, try exchanging it with a writing buddy (for example a friend from our class). Their fresh eyes can help catch mistakes your eyes might miss, and they can let you know where your analysis and argument is strong and where it can be improved.
Did you know there is a Writing and Research Centre on campus that helps students with the writing process for free?! The Writing and Research Centre supports all students on our campus through all stages of the writing process. Everyone can benefit from feedback on their writing. You can check them out online and book an appointment here: http://library.ok.ubc.ca/wrs/wrc/
If you need citation help, you can drop by the library front desk. The library website also has information about citation here: http://library.ok.ubc.ca/research-help/planning-your-research/tutorials-workshops/
Become familiar with UBC policies on honesty. Below are just 2 examples of academic misconduct. Read the policy here: http://www.calendar.ubc.ca/okanagan/index.cfm?tree=3,54,111,958 Plagiarism, which is intellectual theft, occurs when an individual submits or presents the oral or written work of another person as his or her own. Scholarship quite properly rests upon examining and referring to the thoughts and writings of others. However, when another person’s words (i.e., phrases, sentences, or paragraphs), ideas, or entire works are used, the author must be acknowledged in the text, in footnotes, in endnotes, or in another accepted form of academic citation. Where direct quotations are made, they must be clearly delineated (e.g., within quotation marks or separately indented). Failure to provide proper attribution is plagiarism because it represents someone else’s work as one’s own. Plagiarism should not occur in submitted drafts or final works. A student who seeks assistance from a tutor or other scholastic aids must ensure that the work submitted is the student’s own. Students are responsible for ensuring that any work submitted does not constitute plagiarism. Students who are in any doubt as to what constitutes plagiarism should consult their instructor before handing in any assignments. Submitting the same, or substantially the same, essay, presentation, or assignment more than once (whether the earlier submission was at this or another institution) unless prior approval has been obtained from the instructor(s) to whom the assignment is to be submitted.

Fall2018
Research-Based ArgumentLength: Minimum 7 pages , double-spaced
Due: 30 November
For your research project, you will complete a series of assignments that will culminate in a 7 to 8-page final argumentative research paper. In this research-based argument paper, you will be analyzing a particular social issue, particularly recycling. An issue is some situation about which people do not agree.
Drawing on your own experiences and analysis of various texts (commercial & government websites, blogs, articles in newspapers & magazines, etc.), you will compose an argument that makes some particular claim about the impact and significance of recycling. Your research project for this course will combine research, analysis, and argument. Once you have identified your research interest and focus for this project, you will:
Conduct primary research through
1. Your Fieldwork experience
And
2. Interviews with people (students, family/friends, professors, experts) about their perceptions of recycling and individuals social responsibility.
Conduct secondary research and select a variety of texts that suggest or promote perspectives on recycling.
Analyze your primary and secondary texts to understand the various perspectives on your issue:
Use your analysis & synthesis of these texts as evidence to build an argument that makes a CLAIM about the meaning or significance of your research in terms of community service. You are required to use both primary and secondary sources:
1. At least one primary source. Examples of primary sources:( i did a survey and the result is that no one did recycling)2. At least 1 EACH of the following secondary sources.

b. Newspaper or magazine articles (print or online)
c. A blog or a YouTube video
d. Governmental or non-governmental website on recycling in Kuwait. There is usually this argument about the efficacy of volunteerism and its contribution to societies. Some people would argue that volunteering would never help in saving our planet while others swear by the wonders that volunteers can achieve. Your paper should address this controversy clarifying what can ordinary people like us do towards reycling? Can volunteering with NGOs help? Why? Do we need to change our attitudes and our habits? Was the video well organized and presented? Based on the video, are you surprised that Weisbord, Janoff, and Owen are successful consultants?

Sandra Janoff and Marvin Weisbord are the original developers of the Future Search method and are the founders of the Future Search Network. Corporations pay a lot of money for their services, but fortunately they have a few videos up on YouTube so you can get a taste of what kind of material they go through when giving a seminar. Find some videos from one or both of them and share the link to the video that you find the most useful. Harrison Owen is the developer of Open Space Technology. He also has a few videos up on YouTube as well. Take a look at some of his videos and share the link to one that you found to be the most useful. Answer the following questions concerning the videos on Future Search and Open Space: 1. Did the videos help you understand any of the concepts from the background readings? Be specific as to what concepts were covered in the videos that were also covered in the readings.
