OR CHOICE 2 In 2013 Rev Ltd set up as a small car manufacturing company. Over the last few years, car sales have increased steadily though they still only have about 1% of the car sales market in the UK. Their main selling point is that they are eco-friendly and cost-efficient. Rev Ltd has just invented a new emissions control system. Recent test results show that this new system will cut the emission of carbon monoxide gas to zero. This will allow them to break into the European car market. Rev Ltd has applied for a patent on their new system. Rev Ltd has recently learned that Renton, the largest car manufacturer in Europe, is about to launch their own new emissions control system, which appears to have exactly the same technology as that of Rev Ltd. Rev Ltd fear that this is a copy of their system and is a breach of their patent. Mr Smith, the managing director of Rev Ltd is also worried about another matter. He has been contacted recently by Mr Jones, the editor of Bottom Gear which is the UKs top-selling car magazine. Mr Jones said that he has been given confidential Rev Ltd documents which prove that the results of Rev Ltd tests on its new emissions control system were fixed and not honestly obtained. Mr Smith has denied these accusations but is concerned as Mr Jones has said that he will publish the story in the next issue of Bottom Gear, which is due to go to press in one week. Advise Mr Smithon any equitable remedies that may be available to Rev Ltd.

-Explore patterns of difference between the sources. (What kinds of evidence do the texts present?

Required Reading from your textbook:
Chapter 3: pages 30-31, 35-44.As a college student, one of your main academic tasks is reading. Then, you are usually required to apply your reading-based knowledge to an exam, most often objective and/or essay. Many times, after an exam is completed, a student will forget the knowledge he/she worked so diligently to attain. One of the reasons this occurs is because we arent often asked to explore the connections between disparate ideas across academic disciplines: for example, we dont often consider that art or literature reflects the values of a given period in history, etc. If we take time to read, think, and write about how different ideas connectthat is if we work more actively to synthesize material– two things are likely to occur: 1) a deeper engagement with the subject(s), and 2) a guarantee that the knowledge gained will stick with us well-beyond taking an exam. Assignment #3 asks you to examine various texts on a common theme, and then to synthesize the content. The Assignment
After youve read the required reading, and considered our class discussion, write a 6-8 page essay that synthesizes the 3 articles (in your text) on the value of higher education. Arrange and interpret this information in a way that supports a clear thesis, while examining the various points of connection and separation between your sources. For this paper, we will synthesize the 3 short articles you read in your text. Lastly, you will need to include an MLA-formatted Works Cited page (which does not count toward page length); I will discuss these requirements with you in forthcoming classes.Characteristics of a Synthesis:
1. In the intro:
-Begin with some sentences that identify the overall topic of the sources you read.
-Provide some summary-type sentences that link the various sources together. (EXAMPLE: This collection of sources examines X, Y, Z.)
-End with a thesis statement that sums up the focus of your essay: Whats your informed opinion on the topic, in relation to the sources? What do you want your readers to understand and why?2. Divide your paper into separately-titled sections:
-Three short, separate summaries (one for each source).
-Synthesis (this will be the longest part of your paper; it can also be multiple sections.)
-Conclusion2. Your synthesis section/s should:
Do they place emphasis on certain ideas or concepts?)
-Explore points of connection between the sources. (What kinds of evidence do the texts present? Do they place emphasis on certain ideas or concepts?)
-Incorporate MLA-formatted quotations from the reading to illustrate your discussion.
-Fill in with your interpretations, observations, and relevant personal experiences. That is, fuse together the ideas of different sources in a way that demonstrates and supports your thesis.3. The conclusion should:
-Remind your readers of significant themes within the sources.
-Remind your readers how these themes connect to your topic.
-Close in a memorable fashion, still supporting your thesis.
Devenneys Drafting Guide1. Creating the ultimate thesis.
The thesis is the last sentence of the introductory paragraph. This thesis statement 1) identifies the topic of discussion, and 2) answers these questions: whats your informed opinion on this topic, in relation to the sources? What do you want your readers to understand and why?
2. Gathering evidence from your sources.
Re-read your sources, looking for evidence of your thesis.
These various instances of similarity and/or difference are what become the subsections (or body paragraphs) of your paper.
3. Organizing and developing your content. Organize this paper into separately-titled sections.
Give the subsection an appropriate title.
Write one or two sentences that relate to or introduce the topic of the subsection.
Include information from more than one source. Integrate evidence (quotations) from the sources to show similarity and/or difference in perspectives.
Here is a model for integrating your quotations properly: Clark asks, Is this overconcern with body size a new obsession? (116). When integrating quotations, identify the author in a signal phrase or appropriate in-text citation. Put the page number in parentheses at the end of the quotation, and put a period outside the parentheses.
Use appropriate signal words and phrases, listed on p. 3 of this document , to engage the sources in comparison and /or contrast.
Interpret the sources in a way that supports your thesis.
5. Developing your conclusion.
Your conclusion for this paper should be brief, approximately 4-6 sentences. Simply follow your assignment guidelines.
