Compare how two different translators have rendered one of the following passages from Beowulf: Beowulf sails to Denmark (194224)

Beowulf fights Grendel (790818)
Beowulf fights Grendels Mother (153769)
Beowulf and Wiglaf kill the dragon (26722708)
You can pick two from among the following translators:
E. Talbot Donaldson
Seamus Heaney
John McNamara
Edward L. Risden
Alan Sullivan and Timothy Murphy
J.R.R. TolkienWhichever two translations you pick, your assignment is to look for differences in word choice, syntax, and poetic form between them and explain how these differences affect the meaning, tone, and style of the passage. Reproduce both translations of the passage early in your essay and refer to them frequently throughout your analysis.
Begin your paper with a genuine question about how the translations differ. Make that question the last sentence of your first paragraph. The rest of the essay should answer this question. Present your analysis in a clear and well-organized manner. Each paragraph should deal with a specific element of the translations, explain how that element works, and present its main point in a clear topic sentence. Draw your conclusions in your final paragraph, briefly summing up your answers to the question posed at the start of the essay. Read both translations of the passage slowly, carefully, and repeatedly in order to make worthwhile observations on them. Your assignment is to analyze the translations themselves, not Anglo-Saxon culture, or
the Mythic Heros Journey, or the Meaning of Life. And dont get bogged down in plot summary or paraphrase or other abstractions. Make everything you say in your analysis relate directly to the actual words of the text. Dont get sidetracked; stick with the words. The more specific you are, the stronger your analysis will be.Make your prose as clear and concise as possible. Dont waste your time (or mine) trying to sound impressive. Write, instead, in a conversational voice: the clear, plainspoken, engaging voice of a person talking about a subject they find interesting. Dont let your
essay run longer than what you have to say. One sentence that actually says something is better than a paragraph that doesnt. Make every word count. In evaluating your essay, I will focus on the intelligence and specificity of your ideas, the precision of your analysis, the clarity of your prose, and the originality and persuasiveness of your thesis.

Theoretical Perspectives of Sociology

As was presented during the reading and discussions on chapter one of our text, historically, there have been three primary theoretical perspectives that sociologists have utilized to interpret social life. These are symbolic interaction ism, functional analysis and conflict theory. Students are introduced to these theories in the first chapter of the text and they are revisited on numerous occasions throughout the semester. In addition to these theories, students have also been introduced to the long standing debate in sociology as to whether or not the purpose or goal of social research should be only to advance the understanding of human behavior or if it should be also investigate and reform harmful social arrangements.Based on the above information, the requirement for this General Education Competency Assignment is that all students complete a paper that summarizes each of the three primary theoretical perspectives by identifying the role of instrumental/influential figures and the key concepts/ideas related to each of these three theories. Students will then identify which of these three theories they believe to be most useful in studying society today and explain the rationale behind their selection.

Case Study
Why did he open fire at school?February, 1988, Jason Harless, a seemingly quiet, easy going 15 year old commented just days before the a Pinellas Park shooting about a school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut. Jason said Theyre just kids, the incomprehensible. He was stunned that someone would go after children with a gun. Just months before was the Columbine, High School shootings in Aurora, Colorado. But Harless found himself on the other side of the law when he and a friend came to Pinellas Park High School with stolen .38 caliber hand guns.
After a student had reported to his teacher seeing the guns, administrators approached the two students in the cafeteria. They struggled to get the guns away from the boys, at which point Harness fired and shot a teacher in the leg, fired three bullets in the abdomen of and administrator, and killed an assistant principal hitting him point blank in the head killing him.
Jason Harless was convicted of second degree murder. His friend Jason McCoy was convicted of third degree murder. Jason Harless received a sentence of eight years in prison, Jason McCoy received a sentence six years in prison; but served less than two. Harless was questioned extensively about his reasons for the shootings. He recognized the similarities to the other school shootings; but maintains they were far different from his. He said he had absolutely no motive. Harless and McCoy planned to run away from home; but did not plan to harm anyone; but explained they stole the guns for protection. Harless maintains if the administrators did not rush them in the cafeteria, none of this would have happened.
The school system and local law enforcement were trying to look for solutions, but needed to first pinpoint the cause. Perhaps it was loose gun control laws, mental issues, or violent videos. Harless adamantly said none of these were the cause and nothing could have been done to prevent the shootings that day. Harless claims it was the violence he witnessed as a child that made him an angry kid He said it may have been a factor in the shootings but stated at the end of the day, there are no preventable measures, its human nature. He grew up outside Baltimore in a rough area. Another child beat him with a lead pipe at a young age. He also said he saw his father beat his mother on regular basis. That, he claims, made him protective of people he cared for. That is why he claimed to run across the cafeteria to help McCoy when he saw him scuffling with administrators.
Harless has lead a model life since being released from prison 10 years ago.
