Duels are seen in almost all of Shakespeares plays, regardless it being a tragedy or even a comedy. The four plays that have intriguing duels to discuss are Richard II, Henry IV part 1, Henry IV Part 2, and lastly Hamlet.

For this assignment you will explore a particular topic across several plays and develop a thesis
based on your explorations.
Assignment: Using character and circumstances, compose a 12-15 page essay using four or
five plays assigned in this course whose characters thoughts and actions are represented in
the service of a specific theme.

Employ a critical method to focus your reading of the primary play text
Make your argument based on the evidence you find in the details of the plays. All
discussion of how a character exemplifies your theme should incorporate multiple,
analyzed quotations. You should avoid long quotations.

Research Essay Structural Advice:
Your thesis: An example of an argument (thesis) for such an essay might sound like:
Shakespeares representation of duplicity as shown through
Hotspur, Jessica, Beatrice, and Claudius demonstrates that
sometimes-harsh intellectual preparation is necessary before acting
to achieve unconventional goals.
Using the thesis above as an example, how does this break down into topic
selection and, later, into a possible exploration of the topic? Take a look at my
breakdown:
o the topic/theme examined: duplicity;
o the characters: Hotspur, Jessica, Beatrice, and Claudius;
o the insight the writer reached after examining how duplicity is represented by
these characters: they all have to psych themselves up before taking duplicitous
action to achieve something they want.
o What this thesis statement leads the reader to expect in the essay that follows:
Im expected that the writer will probably establish the following topics in
relation to each character: 1. that (and how) the character is duplicitous; 2. each is
duplicitous in the service of achieving an unconventional goal; 3. that (and how)
they prepare themselves intellectually to act in a duplicitous way. For some I will
expect to hear 5. That this preparation is harsh or hard on them in some way.
When it comes time to draft your essay, notice that you have to establish and
support what to you is now basic before you move on to the less basic ideas.
Your introduction should prepare us to hear about Shakespeare plays from a particular
era (give date range earliest play to latest); identity your topic/theme and connect it to
that era (that is, make it clear that youre not talking about sibling love throughout all
time and space); identify the critical method you will employ; name the plays and
characters you will be addressing; give thesis statement.
Critical Method: In many cases you may find it helpful to explain the guiding critical
insight that you take from your critical method in the first body paragraph.
What do I mean by this? Lets say you want to look at your topic through a historical
lens: not every historical insight is going to be useful, so focus on the historical point that
you think helps us make sense of the topic and which you will then use, refer back to,
within the paper. Likewise, feminists have had lots of things to say. What is one,
specific insight by a feminist that helps you make sense of the topic and which you will
use to guide your analysis? [people choosing a formalist method may find they dont
need to use the first body paragraph in this way]
Your Conclusion: Your conclusion should not merely restate previous discussions,
although you will certainly want to bring us back to the point of your thesis. It should
also avoid cheerleading [Shakespeare is awesome! These issues are timeless!] It
should instead leave the reader with insightful, thoughtful commentary: what are the
implications of the point these characters make about your topic?
