Describe, examine and analyze the city as embedded in the works of Walt Whitman, Charles Baudelaire and Emile Zola that you have read. In these three distinct narratives we get a sense of what it meant to be living in two of the greatest capitals of nineteenth-century modernity: Paris, the enticing city of light, history and materialism and New York, the emerging Mecca of diversity, ambition, and the American dream. The three readings provide us with three vastly distinct (yet comparable) perspectives: an optimistic viewpoint of Manhattan (Song of Myself-written by Walt Whitman), the dark side of an intoxicating Paris (Flowers of Evil-written by Charles Baudelaire) and the masculine intentions lurking behind the feminine faade of the Parisian consumerist culture of enticement (The Ladies Paradise- written by Emile Zola). Section 26 of Song of Myself, for example, as a critic notes, deals with the mystery of hearing. Unlike the eyes, the ears never close, especially in the city: the sounds of the world incessantly carry themselves on waves into our very being. So here Whitman stops to listen and absorb the sounds of the world around him as they blend (all sounds running together) into the song of himself. As with the eyes, so do the ears bring a cacophonous array of experience into the self, from sounds of work to alarm bells to arguments to cries for help to operas to funeral marches. It is all one chorus, made up of the endlessly conflicted sounds of life, and this varied music ‘suits’ the poet. The best way to apply your findings and illustrate your points is to examine the impact of the different feelings the urban environment has on the two poets (Whitman and Baudelaire) and the characters of the novel(Ladies Paradise- Zola). Also, it is imperative that by drawing comparisons among the three works you also draw the contrasts between the two cities. The paper should be about 5 pages in length and include a title and bibliography page. You need to number the pages and introduce some quotes from the works. You need a clarity of perspective and power of analysis, as well as grammar, structure and format. Visit all the related links posted early in the semester (Prepositions, Punctuation, Verbs to introduce quotes, Italics etc.) Proofread adequately prior to submission. Every detail counts. RESEARCH For your research you are required to have at least eight secondary sources. You are encouraged to use any of the essays and introductions you have read from the Norton Anthology of World Literature or the online links as secondary sources. Also, you will need to conduct your own library research for additional related sources. Two highly recommended sources related to Whitmans New York and Baudelaires and Zolas Paris (available at most libraries) are: David Reynoldss Walt Whitmans America: A Cultural Biography, 1995 David Harveys Paris Capital of Modernity, 2006 You can also refer to the books read in class: The Norton Anthology World Literature Walt Whitman Leaves of Grass Charles Baudelaire Flowers of Evil Emile Zola Ladies Paradise
