Erika Lee, At Americas Gate, Chapter 1
( These are the sources , please use about 5 sources from these readings in total to answer the prompt.)
FORMAT FOR YOUR RESPONSE ESSAY
The essay should begin with a very short introduction (about 2-4 sentences) that announces your overall thesis. Simply use the intro to answer the question.

Intro example:

Immigrants, who came to British North America, were able to carve out their own space in the new world. This is evident in their ability to x, y, z.(x, y, z need to be short clear phrasings of your three supporting arguments.)

FORMAT FOR YOUR RESPONSE ESSAY
The essay should begin with a very short introduction (about 2-4 . Then the essay should contain about three supporting paragraphs. Each paragraph should begin with a topic sentence that announces the paragraphs supporting argument. In other words, the topic sentence should be a mini-thesis statement that supports your overall thesis. Then, in the supporting paragraphs, supply evidence from the reading assignment to support your paragraphs mini-thesis. Aim to cover a wide range of different sources from the reading. Because this is such a short assignment, you do not need a conclusion paragraph. You can just end with your last supporting paragraph. Do not go over two pages.

In outline form, the essay should look like this:
-Intro (2-4 sentences, with thesis statement that answers the assigned question) -Supporting paragraph #1 (with topic sentence at start, giving mini-thesis for paragraph)
-Supporting paragraph #2 (same)
-Supporting paragraph #3 (same)

Do not rely on long quotations that take up too much space. Instead, try to quote just the most interesting snippets of the primary sources. Choose just the most revealing four or five words from a primary-source passage and build your ideas around it.

Citations: Do not worry about a bibliography or about formal footnotes or endnotes for these brief response essays. At the end of a sentence with quoted material or specific information, just provide a brief parenthetical citation. For individual sections in this reading use common sense abbreviations: for example, for Erika Lee, At Americas Gate (Lee, 78).

As you ponder your response, think about those who continue to benefit from, and those who continue to suffer from, the legacies of racism and racial privilege. How could we correct the ongoing legacies of the past without considering race?

If the historic and social meanings that have been attached to race have no basis in science, and the genetic reality of the human race is that we are all the descendants of different tribes and peoples who mixed with each other, should race have any significance in todays society?

Briefly describe the example and free speech issue. 2. What is the justification for limiting speech in the example?

In this weeks assignment, you will apply the standards set for free speech as described in your textbook to a current issue of free speech on college campuses. For ideas, here is a video about possible threats to free speech: https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=126&v=fNxjkNpljKs. First, decide on a topic of interest to you relevant to the topic. Next, find an example of this topic that is currently an issue at an American college or university (including, but not limited to, Towson). For the example you select, answer the following questions: What is the benefit of limiting expression in this case? 3. Does the example violate the standards of free speech through the government restricting protected forms of speech or expression? Why or why not? 4. Do any of the specific limits to free speech apply in this case? If so, which limit? 5. Do you agree with the limit of free speech (regardless of whether you see it violating free speech or not)? Why or why not? You must cite at least 2 outside sources (beyond course sources) with information about the example. Provide a full citation for all outside sources used, and cite them in the text as you draw from them. You should also cite the textbook or other course material anywhere it is used in text, but do not need full citations for those citations. The assignment should be approximately 1 page, double spaced, not including the citations for the sources. Submit the assignment in class as a hard copy on Thursday. Late submissions will not be accepted without a written excuse for a documented emergency.

recognizing the diversity among women and feminists

write about 500 words maximum long plus citation. Title pages, page numbers, headers, footers, embedded bibliographic formats, etc. are unnecessary and slow the grading process. Single line spacing is preferred to double spacing. Sans-serif fonts such as Arial and Calibri are easier to read. Please, no shaded text or text set into background shading. References locate the source so that the information can be checked. Review the requirements for referencing and acknowledging your sources using Parenthetical Citation. The format to follow can be found in the Resources section under the Contents heading on the course website. Articles and unit lectures should be listed with complete publishing details in the Works Cited (see the sample Works Cited on the course website). Edit your writing carefully, paying close attention to sentence construction, composition and word usage. Correct all grammatical errors before submitting your work. Dont miss opportunities to link the course concepts to your discussion. Use the material introduced in unit lectures and readings to support or round out your observations. Two additional sources are suggested as a minimum. This course was designed with everything included and needed to meet requirements. Use references to recognize where the information came from and where it can be located. Avoid vague allusions to course content. A common error is to refer to something pertinent without identifying the source. Opt for feminist writers or authors, researchers, theorists in place of the course manual says. The reference is usually placed at the end of the sentence in front of the period (e.g Luxton 89). If you are citing a secondary source named in a unit lecture, try: Smith writes that….. (quoted in WGSX 1005 unit # p. #). Remember, this is an academic endeavour. Thus, attention to assignments that are well expressed and clearly written while crediting your sources is essential.
