Importance of identity formation through musical practice in Modern Greece

The term Modern Greek music serves embody all types of Greek music that have been present ever since the 16th century up until today. From the birth of modern Greek music to the Modern Greek electro-acoustic era, this genre has inherited a rich past in terms of both its words and folk tradition. Music is perhaps one of the few cultural products that so easily cross local or national boundaries and determine at the same time individuals local identities. At the same time, being a cultural activity through which various social and cultural forces or groups are known, music is an indicator of collective identity. However, listening and performing music as empirical process is complicated by subjective, individual reactions that may not correspond to social classes such as class, race, and gender. Over the last few decades, a growing number of publications on cultural studies, including ethnomusicology, have dealt with the various challenges posed by the postmodern regarding the observation of the notion of culture. These new perspectives almost force us to see the forces that gave birth to the artistic music and the modern Greek song under a new perspective, revising the role of culture in social life.
