Identify the main challenges he faced and the strategies he used to overcome them. Come to a conclusion as to which are the most serious challenges in his life and which are the most powerful strategies he developed for overcoming obstacles.

Background: You have read Part 1 (Chapters 1-8) and Part III (Chapters 15-18) of the book, Born a Crime, in which Trevor Noah describes his life growing up in South Africa during and after apartheid. We have also watched videos about apartheid and interviews with the author, Trevor Noah. Think about what intrigued you about the book and select a topic you would like to write about. Assignment: Write an essay in response to one of the prompts below OR develop your own original response to the book. If you develop your own topic, tell me your idea before you start writing your paper. Prompts 1. One could argue that Trevor Noah is a success story by overcoming poverty and prejudice in apartheid South African and becoming the host of The Daily Show. Think about the authors we read in the beginning of the semester, Carol Dweck and Malcolm Gladwell, and their theories about success. What would Gladwell say influenced Noah to be successful? What would Dweck say made Noah successful? What do you think made Noah successful? Write an essay explaining how Dweck and Gladwell, as well as you, explain Trevor Noahs success. Include details from the book to support each authors point of view and your own ideas, then come to a conclusion about the key factors that led to Noahs success. 2. One could argue that Trevor Noah overcame many challenges in his life. Identify the main challenges he faced and the strategies he used to overcome them. Come to a conclusion as to which are the most serious challenges in his life and which are the most powerful strategies he developed for overcoming obstacles. 3. The title of Noahs book is Born a Crime; the subtitle of his book is Stories from a South African Childhood. This title and subtitle reference the fact that Noah grew up during and after apartheid in South Africa. Explain how apartheid shaped Noahs life, as well as the lives of black and white people around him. Come to a conclusion about the effects of apartheid on Noah in particular and/or on South Africans in general. 4. Write a letter to Trevor Noah in which you explain what most impressed you about his book. For your letter to be successful, you will want to focus on a theme (or themes); provide specific examples, details, and quotes to illustrate your ideas about the book; and arrive at a conclusion about the significance of the book to you. 5. Compare your life to Trevor Noahs life. For instance, you might discuss similar challenges you have faced and how you overcame these; you might compare your families; you might write about being multilingual or growing up in a country other than America. An effective comparison should describe and explain similarities as well as important differences and account for these. That is, why the similarities and differences exist and why they are important. Writing Tips This is a reading assignment as well as a writing assignment. That means you need to spend as much time reading the book carefully as you do writing the essay. A good essay will come from active reading. Your paper should have a thesis, even if you are writing a letter or imagining a dialogue with Dweck and Gladwell. There should be a point to your paper. Write for an audience who is not in our class. That means youll need to summarize or paraphrase important examples from the reading and choose short quotes from the book to help your reader recall the ideas or experiences. When arguing a point, first state the point and explain it in your own words. Then add examples and quotes from the reading to prove your point. Take the time to proofread after you have written your essay. Think about the kinds of mistakes you tend to make, look for and correct them. Show you are really thinking about the topic these are complex questions, so dont settle for easy answers. Summarize effectively and quote skillfully. This means: – When you put something in your own words, the authors meaning remains true but your sentences and words are significantly different, not just a few words changed – Summaries should be accurate and specific – Use quotation marks when including an authors exact words – Give the page # in parentheses after a quote – Introduce quotes by telling your reader who you are quoting & giving context for the quote, such as the situation

To deliver health care services, an ACO needs to create a competent workforce that can provide health care to the patients that are in the ACO.

Some integrated ACO entities already have employed physicians and mid-level providers that receive salaries from the organization, whereas other non-integrated ACO entities need to invest in external relationships with independent physicians and other providers. Since ACOs do not have managerial control over non-employed providers, additional controls and incentives may be necessary to ensure that efficiency is maximized. ACOs also need to consider the number and mix of specialists (e.g., family practice vs internal medicine) and mid-level providers (e.g., physician assistants and nurse practitioners) in delivering primary care services that can promote value. Maximizing value requires appropriate workforce decisions on supply and incentives to encourage providers to minimize costs. For this Assignment, examine the Week 4 Assignment document and consider the efficiency in the supply of health services. To prepare for this Assignment: Review the scenario and Week 4 Assignment document provided to you by the Instructor. Based on the financial data, conduct a financial projection (revenues, expenses, and profit) that analyzes the efficiency of the supply of health services. The Assignment: In a 2- to 3-page Word document that includes tables and/or calculations, make recommendations on the following: 1) number of physicians and nurse practitioners needed; 2) reimbursement method: salary or fee-for-service; 3) recommendations for financial incentives to address the challenges of supplier-induced demand and how to ensure efficiency. Interpret the net profit from the ACO contract based on your recommendations. Explain the rationale behind your recommendations, including the impact made by your financial calculations. 1. Write a 8 page white paper that examines how academic work helps professional success, analyzes the requirements for psychology professionals, and develops an action plan to achieve professional goals.

A white paper originally referred to a government report and meant that the paper was authoritative and informative. White papers today have taken on a broader meaning and are used when a writer wants to make an argument for a specific position or propose a solution to a problem. Typically, the audience for a white paper is the general public seeking a solution to their problems or answers to their questions. Preparation Now that you have enrolled in your master’s program and nearly completed your first course, you have been asked by a professional organization to write a white paper for publication in its upcoming newsletter. The purpose of your white paper is to examine the benefits of beginning a master’s degree in psychology, and how the experience of being a scholar helps prepare you professionally as well. You will also outline the competencies, responsibilities, and other requirements for psychology professionals. What gaps in your knowledge exist, and how will you fill in those gaps? Finally, as you identify gaps in your knowledge, skills, and credentials, you will demonstrate your critical thinking and decision making skills by developing a step-by-step plan to achieve your professional goals. Your white paper should help your audience understand what it takes to become a professional in the field of psychology, and provide them with an example of a realistic plan to succeed. Format your white paper following APA guidelines (you may wish to use the APA Paper Template linked in the Resources) and support your statements with references to at least five scholarly and professional sources. Requirements Within your white paper, include the following: Explain how enrolling in a master’s degree in psychology program will help you succeed professionally. o How will this program prepare you to help others in the area of psychology you plan to go into? o How do the expectations of you as a practitioner-scholar help prepare you for professional success? o What role will research play in your career, and what type of research do you want to do? o What insights did you gain from the research you conducted for Assessment 3? Analyze the requirements for a psychology professional. o Describe the skills and competencies needed to be successful in the field of psychology. o Explain the laws and policies that guide the practice of psychology. o Explain the ethical conduct expected of a psychology professional. o Outline the process to become a psychology professional, such as credentialing, certification, licensure, and so on. Compare the requirements to become a psychology professional with the skills and knowledge you already possess. o Where are the greatest gaps in knowledge? o What areas of concern do you have (if any)? Develop an action plan to achieve your professional goals. (Please focus on the major milestones and do not get lost in the enormous number of smaller steps that you might take.) o In addition to completing your Masters program, will you also participate in any additional training or volunteer opportunities? o Will you create opportunities in your current position that will help you build skill and knowledge? o What professional groups and organizations might you join to help with networking or informational interviews? o How will you stay current with the research and literature in the field? What resources will you use to help develop the competencies needed to be successful both professionally and academically? Be sure you adhere to APA guidelines for style and formatting, and reference at least five resources that may include both scholarly literature and professional sources. Example Assessment: You may use the assessment example, to give you an idea of what a Proficient or higher rating on the scoring guide would look like. Additional Requirements Format: Include a title page and reference page. Length: 8 pages, double-spaced. References: At least five current scholarly or professional resources. APA formatting: References and citations should be formatted according to current APA style and formatting standards. Font: Times New Roman, 12 points.

What discipline in the humanities learned about this week (Visual Art, Literature, or Music) do you feel has historically been the most important in the influence of a culture? Why?

Identify and explain at least one result from this influence. What artist or artists have had the greatest impact on the arts? According to research, what do you believe to be the most defining moment in the history of the arts? Identify the time period and discuss what was happening at that time and place that may have contributed to the production of their work. What are some modern examples of how the arts are reflected or influenced by culture? Discuss at least two examples of your own and include one example from the lecture video. Clearly explain the arts/culture relationship for each of your examples in order to convey a successful understanding. Be sure to include specific examples and elaborate on your comments as detailed in the Discussion Forum Requirements. This forum should be considered a formal writing assignment in addition to a class discussion. Include terms from your textbook. Research (outside of the required course readings) is required, so be sure to document your resources. Cinema-The motion picture, like other arts, is a vehicle of creative expression, and no study of the humanities is complete without including the me- dium. It is the most collaborative art form, involving many contributors. (think of those closing credits!) After each weekend, box office rankings of current films are re- ported in newspapers and on televi- sion; such information is seldom given concerning art gallery open- ings or the premiere performance of a new musical composition. Further evidence of public attachment to film can be found each year when nominations and awards in the in- dustry are announced. Most of the early part of the Academy Awards ? Movie poster for Up in the Air, 2009 telecast is spent honoring editors, sound mixers, composers of back- ground scores, costumers, and oth- ers who toil behind the camera and are frequently overlooked. But for at least one night the public is aware that film is indeed the most collab- orative of all the arts. When all of the participants somehow blend their talents, the result may be a film classic with a wide following for years to come. Films on DVD allow viewers to follow scene by scene the choices made by directors in achieving an effect. They are thus able to under- stand the reasoning behind camera angles, music or its lack, and, for astute critical viewers, even the Chapter9 compromises between the final product as shown on the screen and what the director may have origi- nally intended. Documentaries that often accompany the film itself en- courage critical analysis, showing viewers behind?the?scenes activities that contributed to the creative pro- cess itself. This chapter begins with a dis- cussion of the various elements, or conventions, of the cinema; for only by understanding their function can we view a film more critically and, if all goes well, with greater enjoy- ment. Next come milestones in early film history, followed by an analysis of some popular film genres. ***Music -We live within an audio environment that is most of the time unplanned. That is, we hear what happens to be around, whether it is a jet taking off, the squeal of auto brakes, a hair dryer, or an approaching train. Noise has been around forever. Mammoths were probably sending forth bellows at the moment human awareness was first forming. The majority of the worlds population still exists at the mercy of unwanted noise. Without music, we exist at the mercy of audio pollution as damag- ing to mental health as air and water pollution are damaging to physical health. Created by instruments or human voices, music can be defined as the shaped sound between silences: the better the shape, the richer and more pleasing the sound. Just as visual art offers a wide variety of shapes and forms to provide an en- riched visual environment, music has many sounds: Bach, Mozart, Gershwin, Armstrong, Sinatra, the Beatles, Maroon 5. Limiting our- selves to one kind of music is as det- rimental to growth as if we were never to set foot outside our house ? Pablo Picasso, Three Musicians, 1921 and discover the unlimited life expe- riences waiting out there. Many sounds in the natural world are like music: the song of birds, a mountain stream, gently fall- ing rain, wind over the prairie. The desire to imitate pleasing natural sound seems to be intrinsic to our species. Whistling can remind us of bird song (and note how we refer to the sound of birds in musical terms). The soothing sound of a flowing brook has inspired many composers. The Finnish composer Jan Sibelius wrote Tapiola, an orchestral work in which the strings recreate the sound of wind in a forest. In The Birds, the Italian composer Ottorino Respighi has the orchestra imitating the vari- ous songs and calls of different spe- cies. Composers recognize the affinity between nature and music. Most ancient cultures shared the belief that music was a vital compo- nent of the natural world, a gift from heavenly beings. One theory is that for very early people natural sounds were the voices of the gods, and hu- man song was developed to imitate their voices. In popular idiom, we Chapter 6 sometimes hear comments such as She sings like an angel. Whether or not one believes the mythology of musical origins, music appears to be vital to the human spirit. Is it possible to imagine what life would be like without it? Music is one of the endless treasures bestowed upon us by the humanities, and we are fortunate that, as this art form developed over the millennia, it di- vided into endless varieties. The purpose of this chapter is to encourage you to explore the wide range of musical sound. Some of it is recognized as part of the worlds ar- tistic heritage. Some of it is still very new and may achieve that distinction one day. (Its fun to predict what will.) We will first separate music into its component elements, then describe some of its major, and widely differing, forms, together with some suggested works from the past and present as well as from other cultures that may offer us a more well?rounded musical life. As in any introductory text, the process is necessarily selective. We attempt to open the door of musical recognition a little wider. *Literature-Who has not greatly elaborated on an incident that occurred, embellished with more excitement, more color than it had? In this sense, we are all born story?tellers. A few become professionals at it, but everyone can become involved in what others write and thus share their imaginations. Alas, however, some begin to lose interest and leave all that behind when theyre out of school and going off to their daily jobs. To those people we issue an ar- dent plea. Go back and look for your imagination. Youve left it some- where. But you cant ever really lose it. Maybe its hiding in a drawer along with the missing snapshots of you lying on a baby rug. How did it all start? What was the first kind of literature? Our guess is that the literary impulse was being felt long before there were written lan- guages to preserve the earliest expres- sions of it. In the visual arts, there are cave drawings that date back thou- sands of years prior to the beginning of history. Using our imaginations (which we just found in that drawer), we can suppose that early (very early) people were dancing, chanting, and pounding away with stones and sticks. And there ? Marc Chagall, The Juggler of Paris, 1969 music and dance! It is hard to imagine, however, that some form of literature did not happen along with these other arts. Lets assume that people are natu- ral?born poets and storytellers (and by natural progression, readers) and therefore there is no good reason to look upon literature as something locked away in libraries. Well look at a few examples of the major types, or genres, of literature: the poem, the novel, and the short story. Well see how they might have evolved, and the needs they may have served. Well discuss drama, a major genre of literature, in Chapter 7. Some of the works we shall study are classics, in the sense that they have outlived their time and con- tinue to be relevant. Some have earned the right to be called master- pieces. The more recent must wait a bit for such classification. A masterpiece is a work that in style, execution, and resonance far exceeds what other writers were do- ing at the same time. For example, though many sonnets were success- ful in Shakespeares time, many of his sonnets tower above those of his contemporaries in profundity, so- Chapte4r phistication of technique (handling of meter and rhyme), and the intri- cate use of words contained in what may be the largest vocabulary of any writer of the past or the present. Much of our wisdom springs from the memorable statements in his po- ems and plays. Many classics are also master- pieces, but they dont always have to be. Time and circumstances give continuing relevance to a classic. A masterpiece can always stand on its own, and it will find admirers in any age. Sometimes a masterpiece such as Herman Melvilles Moby- Dick (1850) is not recognized until much later. In the case of Melville, recognition came with a review published in 1924thirty?three years after Melvilles death. This chapter addresses itself to literature of the past and present which springs from the soul of hu- man beings and through which we come to understand ourselves and others with whom we share the amazing condition of being alive. We are going to discuss a few representa- tive works that have achieved literary distinction, some well known, others less familiar but with much to offer. The imaginative world of great literature gives human life another dimension. Janaro, Richard, Thelma Altshuler. The Art of Being Human: The Humanities as a Technique for Living, 10th Edition.
