Think of some of the movies you have watched during your lifetime, and describe one example of a “popcorn hangover” you have experienced. *book definition accordingly to popcorn syndrome and popcorn hangover. The Popcorn Syndrome A word of caution. It is all too easy to give the critical mind a vacation, to surrender to the Dionysian excitement of the moment and decide that further considerations are not important. Doing so will not stretch our mental capacities and should be avoided unless a given work clearly does not warrant time and mental energy. More seductive is the popcorn experience, usually felt at the movies. This is strictly a popcorn movie means that one should be able to sit back, munch on popcorn, and be entertained without having to think. A huge number of films and television shows belong to this category, as indeed do many popular novels called good reads. Dan Browns The Da Vinci Code (2002), one of the most widely read novels ever written, topped the best?seller list for almost two years and sold well into the millions of copies. The story of a secret organization, oppressed by religious au- thorities because it can supposedly prove that Jesus was married and sired a fam- ily, is told in such fast?moving, cinematic prose that the reader cannot wait to turn the page. Exciting? Yes. Suspenseful? Indeed. A great novel? Here one must pause and reflect. Is the story totally believable? Is there any depth to the main charac- ters? Does the novel leave the reader with what we may call residual thoughts? Or is it, like many others, just popcorn fun? Perhaps. Yet one may also decide that any novel so entertaining to read is certainly worthwhile. Popular music, films, novels, cartoons in newspapers and magazinesall that entertains and amuses us for even a short timecan be called, at the very least, the temporary humanities. Like all emotional responses, fun is a legitimate way to spend some time. The non- critical stop there. For the critical, however, Dionysian enjoyment may also lead to a morning? after headache, what we can call the popcorn hangover. The night before at the movies, the big bucket of popcorn, the pleasant company, the fast?moving plot, the nerve?jangling sound track that brings one into a la?la land of no stress. What a great evening. What a terrific movie! Then tomorrow dawns with a subliminal replay of the movie on the semiconscious screen of the half?awake mind. The sud- den sitting up. The flash of truth: How could I possibly have liked that awful film? This can and often does happen, and it is, again, a perfectly valid response. There is a deeper, more satisfying definition of entertainment. Having enjoyed The Da Vinci Code as a good read, a critical person might have looked forward to the film version of 2006, expecting to find not a work of high screen art but at the very least an engrossing, fast?moving thriller, especially since the authors prose had been more than once praised as cinematic. But wasnt the action rather slower than expected? Didnt the slow pace lack the pulsating rhythm of popcorn movies? And didnt that pace bring to the surface some stilted dialogue of the sort that went un- noticed years ago (1973, to be exact) in Steven Spielbergs still celebrated thriller Jawsunnoticed because of the directors sharp technique of dropping the sound level when he thought what was being said did not advance the plot? The critical mind, perceiving that a response has been largely Dionysian, as when hearing a thrilling interpretation of Beethovens Ninth Symphony in a con- cert hall, seeks in the later tranquility of musing on the exciting experience to con- sider those elements which caused the response: the beauty of the singers voices? the unexpected shifts in tempo? the alternation between the majesty of the musical crescendos and the sudden silences that follow? No two analyses will be exactly the same; nor need they be. Critical thinking is valid as a process, not as the absolute determination of good or bad. The important thing is that the unexamined Dionysian response may be limited to Gee, that was terrific!a suitable response as far as it goes but not likely to contribute much toward balancing the two forces in our lives. At best, the unexamined response ought to be restricted to experiences that defy words (Janaro) Janaro, Richard, Thelma Altshuler. Analyze the 2014 California Gubernatorial election results.

Analyze the 2014 California Gubernatorial election results.
Make an educated projection for the 2018 Gubernatorial election.
This years election 2018 will be a midterm election. Midterm elections happen every 4 years in-between presidential election years. During these election years, we elect 1/3 of the US Senate and the US House of Representatives and state and local level public servants. During the last midterm election (2014) California voter turnout was at 42% for the November general election. Of the 24.3 million eligible California voters, 17.8 million were registered to vote in 2014. In 2010 turnout was at roughly 60% during the midterm election. Californias population has stayed at roughly 38 million people over the last 5 years. In this upcoming election 2018 we will elect a Governor of California. In the 2014 Gubernatorial election, Jerry Brown(D) secured 60% of the vote while Neel Kashkari(R) captured 40%. This years race for the Governor is between Gavin Newsom (D) and John Cox (R).Step 1: Make a pie chart in which you show the percent of the California population that elected Governor Brown in 2014.Step 2: Looking at the registration trends table and public opinion poll, make a prediction about this years Gubernatorial election. If you were on Newsoms election campaign staff, what would you tell him to do? If you were on Coxs election campaign staff what would you tell him to do?_________________________________________________
Example Submission:Step1:In 2010total California pop = 37.5 millioneligible voter pop = 23.5 millionRegistered to vote = 17.2 millionTurned out to vote = 10.3 million or 60% of registeredVoted for Jerry Brown = 5.4 million or 53.8% of voteVoted for Meg Whitman= 4.1 million or 40.9% of votePie chart of 2014 voteJerry Brown was elected by 14.4% of the total population of California.*All Data collected from the Ca Secretary of State’s Statement of the Votehttps://elections.cdn.sos.ca.gov/sov/2010-general/complete-sov.pdf (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.Step 2:Brown has consistently polled at 40+% throughout the campaign, where Whitman has struggled at an average of 35% throughout. The poll trend line for Whitman votes leading up to the election is decreasing, meaning she is not gaining any speed but loosing traction going into the election. Based solely upon the polling results, I predict that Brown will win the election. Obviously this isn’t accounting for their difference in political experience, name recognition, gender, or other factors. If I worked on Brown’s campaign I would encourage him to campaign in the flowing light/Whitman counties with large populations: San Diego, San Bernardino, and San Los Obispo. He should also spend time in light/Brown districts such as Napa, Solano, and San Joaquin. He should particularly canvas in neighborhoods with a high density of younger voters, women, and the working class. If I was working for Whitnam I would encourage her to campaign in the same counties, while concurrently providing negative campaign adds in those counties. In addition, Whitman should try to recruit former Governor Schwarzenegger to campaign with her throughout the southern portion of the state. Given the Republican base, Whitman should particularly encourage white men and women to turnout to vote.

In creating future crime reduction programs, what can be learned and put into practice from the success of BBBSA?

Operating for over a century, Big Brothers Big Sisters of America (BBBSA) has proven–through decades of evaluation researchthat mentorship programs for at-risk youth reduce criminal behavior and support positive outcomes for kids who participate. Given todays epidemic levels of fatherlessness, it is more critical than ever to create effective programs such as BBBSA that combat the social harm that results.Read the research articles on the BBBSA program and identify the types of evaluation research and study designs that were used. In a 750-1,000-word essay, address the following:Identify and explain the findings that concluded the program was effective in meeting its intended goals.
Identify any negative or unintended program outcomes.
