Does denial, mismanagement, and poor judgement put us in a similar situation today?

Please respond to the discussion posts (2) below. Please separate the responses in the word document using the title of the posts. The initial discussion question is below as well as the reading material. Df 3 -Jody Spence I dont think denial is a factor because we know what is happening . I just think that greed and big business overshadows the care for the environment. Discussion Forum 3: Alexis Ciccarelle Throughout the years, we have learned how strong human impact can affect the environment along with the biodiversity of the wildlife population. In one way, yes denial and mismanagement are still negatively impacting wildlife population. In the past, we didn’t know how much harm and damage we were actually causing. Years later, we are educated and know the negative effects that we have on the environment and ecosystem, but we continue to make the same choices, endangering wildlife and everything around us. In another way, compared to 150 years ago, the amount of nature and wildlife preserves have significantly increased, and efforts are being put into place to protect endangered species all over the world. Restrictions and regulations for hunting and fishing are put into place for preservation and to ensure each species has enough time to reproduce and keep their population stable. While I can see both sides of this argument, I believe there is still a similar situation today, but just not as drastic. I don’t think denial is as much of a problem in today’s world– people understand and see that our everyday activities affect the environment and wildlife, but just choose not to take action. They aren’t in denial, their just unsympathetic to the cause. Other than denial, mismanagement and poor judgement are still present in today’s world in terms of conservation and management. Read chapters 9 through 11 of Living in the Environment by Miller and Spoolman. ISBN-13: 978-0538735346. Refer to Supplement 6 of Living in the Environment by Miller and Spoolman. Initial discussion question: Just 150 years ago, nature seemed so vast and fertile that it didn’t seem possible that human action could have a lasting impact on wildlife population. Thus for the most part, there were no efforts to preserve or conserve. Do you see a similar situation today, where denial, mismanagement, or poor judgment is occurring?

What exactly, then, is the relationship between celebrity and divinity? Is Rojek right to insist on kinship between the two concepts? If so, why might people resist this argument so much? If not, whats wrong with his logic?

In his book Celebrity, Chris Rojek observes, Anthropological studies of comparative religion and shamanism demonstrate that all cultures possess rites, myths, divine forms sacred and venerated objects, symbols, consecrated men, and sacred places (53). In our ostensibly secular contemporary culture, Rojek finds that celebrities often assume some of these sacralized functions. He explains, A peculiar tension in celebrity culture is that the physical and social remoteness of the celebrity is compensated for by the glut of mass-media information, including fanzines, press stories, TV documentaries, interviews, newsletters, and biographies, which personalize the celebrity, turning a distant figure from a stranger into a significant other. The tension has inescapable parallels with religious worship, and these are reinforced by the attribution by fans of magical or extraordinary powers to the celebrity (52-53).
