The Google online dictionary defines the noun process as, A series of actions or steps taken to achieve a particular end. The Business Dictionary (Webfinance, 2017a) gives a more specific definition: A sequence of interdependent and linked procedures which, at every stage, consume one or more resources (employee time, energy, machines, money) to convert inputs (data, material, parts, etc.) into outputs. These outputs then serve as inputs for the next stage until a known goal or end result is reached.
Deciding what belongs and what doesnt belong to a particular process can be challenging. A common clich states that Everything is connected to everything else. Heres an example. Buying a cup of coffee at Starbucks is connected to:
Making paper products (the cup)
Making paper
The pulpwood industry
Forest management
Climate and climate change
The coffee industry
Production of coffee beans
International trade agreements
Electricity production (for roasting and grinding beans)
We could spin the list out indefinitely; electricity production, for example, is related to the production of fossil fuels, which in turn is affected by the political stability of the Gulf states, etc. But the further afield we go, the less relevance there is to that cup of coffee.
As the Webfinance (2017a) definition implies, any process consists of subprocesses, each of which can be considered a process in its own right. Staying with the coffee example:
Selling hot beverages is a process within Running a Starbucks franchise.
Selling coffee products is a process within Selling hot beverages.
Making a macchiato is a process within Selling coffee products.
Even greater levels of detail could be specified. For example, Filling a cup could be considered as a discrete process, consisting of taking a cup from a dispenser, placing it under the espresso machine, loading the machine with coffee, starting the machine, waiting, removing the cup from under the machine, and passing it to the server. Some coffee products may require additional steps, such as foaming milk with steam.
The first task in Continuous Process Improvement is to identify the process. We must decide exactly what, for our purposes, is part of the process, and what is not. This decision is arbitrary. Here are some examples.
The shift manager at Starbucks wants to make the coffee-serving process more efficient, but shes not interested in the larger process of managing the franchise.
A records clerk at a medical clinic wants to in-process new patients more efficiently, but hes not involved in patient management beyond that point.
An industrial engineer wants to assemble auto engines more efficiently, but he doesnt care about the efficiency of the processes used to manufacture the crankshafts, blocks, valves, camshafts, spark plugs, and so forth.
A political functionary, working from a list, wants to get people to a demonstration, but she isnt concerned with either compiling or maintaining the list.
As weve implied, every process takes place in a larger context (we could also say environment), which provides the resources, inputs, and outputs. The context for each of the items above would be:
A Starbucks franchise.
A medical clinic.
An auto assembly line.
A political organization.
Identifying the process within its context consists of identifying the specific resources allocated to that process, its inputs, and its outputs.
SLP Assignment: Process Identification
Think of a specific process youre familiar with. The process should be sufficiently important to merit improvement, and also sufficiently complex to offer room for improvement. Filling a coffee cup, for example, could be considered a process, and may be important, but its so simple that its difficult to see how it could be improved. On the other hand; running an aircraft repair facility is a process within the larger process of running an Air Force Wing, and while its definitely important, it would be too complex for this SLP.
Any process is embedded in a context. This is the organization which provides its resources, its inputs, and either consumes or distributes its output.
Before going further, please read all of the SLP assignments, to make sure you dont do everything at once. That would result in an overly long paper, which despite its length, wouldnt have sufficient details or adequate explanations. For this SLP, the specific tasks are:
The description should be detailed enough to support the second task, which is to:
Describe a specific process that takes place within the organization. As noted above, the process should be important enough, and complex enough, to meet the needs of all four SLP assignments. The process description should include, in as much detail as possible,
what the process does,
the resources dedicated to the process by the organization,
the inputs consumed by the process, and
the outputs produced by the process.
What sort of improvement could be made in the process? Its not important to be specific, since Continuous Process Improvement (CPI) envisions incremental changes that take place over an extended period of time. All thats required is a general statement, such as make easier, reduce error rate, or increase efficiency with respect to the (labor/materials/time) required.
Bear in mind that resources, inputs, and outputs may consist of materials, products, or services, or any combination thereof.
SLP Assignment Expectations
There are no page limits. Write what you need to write, neither more nor less. Make each sentence count! (Having said that; its unlikely that one page would be enough, and very likely that eight pages would be too much.)

1. Introduction
Cut to the chase right off by saying what the specific problem of the essay is and why it is a problem.
People call sexual practices perverse all the time, but it is hard to figure out what the criteria for perversion are and what difference it makes whether those practices are perverse or not.
Avoid long-winded, flowery and vague introductions such as: Philosophy has been studied for a long time.
Give your thesis up front, saying in the first paragraph exactly what position youre going to be arguing for.
Set out how you understand and will use the key terms in your essay, especially any that are used in the question itself.
2. Argument. Go for a methodical, point-by-point presentation. The reader should know in each part of the essay what the essay is trying to prove, and how it is trying to prove it.
(The reader should be able to use all of his or her brain-power learning from the essay and assessing whether its arguments are plausibleand should be able to spend no brain-power trying to figure out what the essay is trying to prove.)
3. All essays should include critical evaluation of the topic under discussion. Its not enough just to describe what others have said. By the end the readers should understand the arguments that have led you to your own conclusions about the topic.
4. Conclusion. Avoid glib conclusions such as this is a very difficult subject and there are arguments on both sides. Your reader knows that, especially as you should have presented just those arguments. Your conclusion should be a considered response to the arguments you have given, challenged and evaluated.
At this point, dont be afraid to give your own personal response to the question, so long as it is based on and follows from the material you have discussed. The examiner does want to see that you have engaged with the material rather than simply regurgitated it.
III – Style and economy
1. Clarity is the main virtue of a philosophy essay. Its better to write a clear boring essay than a muddled entertaining one.
2. Simplicity: Simpler words and short sentences are often clearer. Dont go for fancy terms or complex sentences unless you absolutely have to. (Note: One almost never has to.)
3. Define the essays main terms with precision early on (you may have done this in the introduction).
a. E.g. Act utilitarianism is the thesis that an action is right if and only if it is the action that produces the most utility.
4. Focus: Dont lay out more of a view than you need to. There are no marks for simply repeating everything you know about a subject. On the contrary, there are higher skills marks available for knowing how to leave out irrelevant material.
a. E.g. if your problem is that utilitarianism may be too demanding, you may not have to discuss in the essay the different interpretations of what utility is (whether there is a distinction between higher and lower pleasures, etc.).
Focusing appropriately on the question at hand is one of the best ways to get marks in philosophy. Meandering aimlessly is a very fast way of losing them.
5. Depth: Go in depth concerning the problem specified by the essay topic; you dont need to say everything about everything. Better to explore one subject in detail than two subjects superficially.
6. If youre arguing against someones position, present your opponents arguments as sympathetically as possible. Your arguments are only as strong as the arguments they defeat.
7. These essays may not need to use many (or even any) quotes from the readings.
8. Very rarely will you need to discuss the work of more than two or three philosophers in any detail in an essay. It is better to pick representatives of the positions you are discussing and evaluating these in depth than to rattle off a dozen names that you barely mention again.
9. Avoid starting sentences by I feel or I believe. The point of the essay is to convince others using good arguments, not simply to express oneself.
10. Avoid sweeping and unsupported statements that may be controversial, e.g., There are no right answers in morality.
