Lorna Discussion The article I chose that portrays corruption in a police agency is the case of https://www.nytimes.com/2018/02/06/us/baltimore-police-corruption.html In this article it discusses one of the most startling police corruptions in a generation. Not involving citizens but the police officers off the Baltimore area. Six officers involved in this corruption pleaded guilty, which four of them are testifying against the other two officers who are now on trial. The officers who are now on trial are identified as Officer Taylor and officer Harsel. These officers took every opportunity they had to rob the citizens they were sworn to protect, These officers committed a number of crimes including selling seized guns and drugs back onto the streets, sending innocent people to jail, and using GPS devices to track and rob from citizens. This department was already under investigation prior to this case by the federal government. I believe the actions committed by these officers were Malfeasance. These officers believed that the victims would never speak up and if they did no one would believe them. In 2017 Baltimore had the highest per capital murder rate in its history. These officers have been robbing and committing all these unethical acts for the past 5years, their supervision is to blame. An example of malfeasance is when the officers would keep BB guns in their police cars in case they needed to plant them on suspects, and placed tracking devices on the vehicles of civilians, so they can go to their residence and steal from them. These officers had one job to get guns off the street instead they robbed and sold guns. I believe these officers committed these crimes consciously knowing exactly what they were doing; they became criminals themselves, taking advantage of those who couldn’t protect themselves and exploiting their position as police officers. Elizabeth Discussion While most people look at police corruption as only things such as police brutality or civil rights violations, theft within the department seems to be a common crime for officers. In the case I found a police chief from Louisiana, Chief Harry Brignac, was being accused of using the department credit card to buy $60 worth of gas for his personal vehicle. This crime is considered malfeasance and he is being charged with it as such. According to the article I found titled “Louisiana Community Police Chief Arrested for Malfeasance” it states that the Chief (Brignac) was forced into retirement back in 2016 due to “owing fines for failing to file his financial disclosures.” Knowing this I would think it were safe to say he probably did use this fuel card intentionally for his own use. His wife claims it was a “simple mistake of the use of which card he used” and being that he is 71 years old I suppose this could be true however, if he could “accidentally used a credit card” that many times how many times did he “accidentally” arrest someone? Unfortunately(for Brignac), I think this case will be open and shut fortunately for the people of this community their tax dollars will no longer be spent on gassing up the chiefs personal vehicle.

There are many ways to dispute his actions, but nevertheless, the San Francisco 49er’s released him, and no other team (even those who need a good quarterback) has picked him up to play in the league. This is a predominantly white-ruled league of owners who have not come out and said they wouldn’t sign him because he is black, but because the role he is playing society. No one has ever said, publicly, why Kaepernick hasn’t been signed, but it is clear, he is blacklisted and will never see time on an NFL field again. 2: Nicole Discussion For individual discrimination, it is when it is only one individual or small groups discriminating. Institutional discrimination is more of a denial of opportunities and rights to certain individuals. One example I can think of is when you have a felony record and go to apply for jobs, some will automatically not accept you. One other can be racial profiling that has been seen happening the past few years with police. Recently a black student was napping in a common room at Yale and another student called the cops because she looked “suspicious.” In reality, she was also a student there and was once again being racially profiled.
