Assignment: Each person will prepare a 5-8 page term paper which reviews a topic concerning some aspect of interpersonal communication in relation to a television show. You may choose to investigate a specific theory, a specific line of research, or a specific topic that has to do with interpersonal communication (note: Social Penetration Theory is banned as a topic). Topics are pretty open and there are thousands of potential areas to discuss. Watch any show that has situations that could be construed as interpersonal in nature (which is nearly all of them). Choose a scene or set of related scenes from the show that you believe demonstrates the area of interpersonal communication that you have chosen to explain. Discuss concepts from the textbook, class lecture, and at least 2 outside academic sources published within the last 10 years from the provided list (i.e., peer reviewed journals besides the textbook specifically from included list) that help explain why the communication in those scenes was particularly effective or ineffective, and/or how the communication in those scenes affected the storyline or outcome of the episode/show. You need to provide an original argument within the paper. Simply discussing a concept and detailing how it is present in the show is insufficient. Developing an argument will require you to make an original claim (i.e., take an arguable position) and provide evidence and logic to support your position. Requirements to remember: 1] Each paper should follow APA (American Psychological Association) style, including grammar, cover page (with Running head), page numbers, citations, references, etc. A good source for APA style can be found at the following website: https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/section/2/10/. You do not need to write an abstract, but you do need a title page, running head, and reference section. 2] The paper must use at least two academic articles published within the last 10 years from the list provided besides the show and the text book (you are welcome to, but dont have to use the text as a source). The goal is for you to integrate current research findings into your analysis. These articles must be from a published peer reviewed Communication journal from the included list. The articles need to be interpersonal in nature (and not mass media communication). The bibliographies at the end of the chapters in your text are decent guides to such literature. Remember to provide a list of references. Google Scholar is a nice resource to use to search for relevant journal articles. Basics: APA format– 1 margins, Times New Roman, 12 point font. Your paper should include references to readings and 2 outside sources from published journal articles. 3] Papers that do not meet the minimum page limit or exceed the maximum page limit will receive a 10 point deduction. 4] Remember to cite all information that you use from outside sources or that originated from an outside source (including journal articles, textbook, and show). This section must be clearly detailed enough to demonstrate the concept of interest, but it should not be the bulk of the paper. How is the communication in those scenes particularly effective or ineffective? How does the communication in those scenes affect the storyline or outcome of the show? Conclusion: Review your thesis statement and the main points you made in the body of the paper. (~1/2 page) EVALUATION: 1] The most effective strategy is to select a very narrow topic and do the research which allows depth in your analysis. Very generic treatments or topics will not be as favorably received. You will most likely find the initial topic you choose to be too broad (for example, Nonverbal communication, or even facial expressions) and once you know enough about the topic, you can then focus your discussion on an even more narrow aspect. If you have a question about your topic selection, an appropriate direction to follow, or where to look for materials, stop by my office hours or by appointment and talk. If you are uncertain, browse relevant journals, consult the text book, or turn to patterns or situations you have notice in “real life.” I know that each person in the class has thousands of “personal learnings” about interpersonal which are interesting, have been written about or tested in the literature, and merit consideration. 2] The paper should: a. Identify the major terms of the area/theory directly related to interpersonal communication; identify and explain major implications of the area investigated for understanding the interpersonal process; identify limitations when appropriate b. Show how the show scene(s) you have selected demonstrates the area/theory related to interpersonal communication. Most importantly you must do more than simply report – also provide your analysis and conclusions to support the argument you make. Select a topic regarding Interpersonal Communication, not media or mass communication, for example. e. What does an “A” paper look like? Since the beginning of the 20th century, the US has conducted interventions in many countries around the world to maintain an Open Door for US hegemony (indirect control). Foreign interventions can range from psychological operations to discredit foreign governments to supporting armed rebels or coups d’tat to full-scale military invasions. Some countries have been subject to multiple US foreign interventions. You will focus on one specific intervention 1. The essay should be 3-4 double-spaced pages and include an introduction, three body paragraphs, and a conclusion. 2. The introduction should end with a thesis statement (main idea) that clearly states WHY the US intervened in that country. 3. The body of the essay should identify and explain three important aspects of the intervention that support your thesis.
