(You can certainly write more, but if you make it to page 18, you have probably written way too much). 1) Your paper(s) will not be about the history of the topic itself but will be a critical history of the manner in which some major historians have approached and interpreted your topic. 2) You would do well to set up the context of your topic in the opening paragraph. 3) In your second paragraph (your thesis paragraph), discuss the way historians have approached your topic over time. You can name-drop all six of them, or just a few, depending on how you see them comparing to each other or if one was enormously more important than the others. But cap this paragraph with a clear overall argument about your six main sources, emphasizing how the historiography has changed over time (or hasnt). Be as specific as you can without letting your writing become cumbersome. 4) Remember to concentrate on the approach and the overall argument of each source, rather than falling down the rabbit-hole of fascinating details about the topic. You also want to give a sense of the scope (what are the range of topics considered in the article/book?) 5) You should make comparisons along the way between historians, in line with your overall argument. You can do this with some stand-alone paragraphs making comparisons, or you can integrate your comparisons into your body paragraphs analyzing each historian. 6) Finally, in your conclusion, you should probably try to make sense of why any of this matters (what does it tell us more broadly?) 7) Writing: a. Do keep in mind all of the notes that I have made on your previous papers. Most of my comments focused on clarity; when in doubt, make your sentences as simple and direct as possible. But also pay attention to the notes I gave all of you about strong topic sentences, mechanical issues (ranging from punctuation to pronouns), transitions (not at the end of paragraphs!), setting up citations, etc. b. Please follow Turabian/Chicago style scrupulously for your paper. This means observing proper footnoting style in the body of the paper itself. -Context paragraph -Thesis paragraph: —Overview of the historiography and how it has changed; the big shifts (major historians); —Argument: whatever it is that youre arguing about either how the field has shifted, or the nature of the field (if its a more recent topic) -Plan of attack paragraph (optional) -Historian 1 (earliest?) –Overall argument; how that argument unfolds (sub-arguments); structure of the book or article –overall approach (kinds of sources? Type of history (political? Intellectual? Social? Cultural?) ? what sort of (methodological) tools is the author using (gender history? Anthropology? Post-structural e.g. Foucault?) Comparing them to another entirely different set? Etc.) For each author: -No summaries; try not to focus on things that are not connected to the paragraph above); do not fall down the rabbit hole of details about the actual topic -dont lose track of your thesis as youre writing -if youre using reviews: make sure that its always clear WHO is speaking -make sure your footnotes are in the correct format -make comparisons as you go forward (with historians 2-6) -Conclusion (revisit the change over time; how the field might move in the future) Works Cited (in Chicago/Turabian style) -Remember: six main historians, 10 sources (this includes book reviews, properly cited of course) Must use book topics in chronological order: 1.
