My Paper:Jealousy is one of the most controversial cognitive emotions in relationships, when dealing with a third person. Jealousy is found to be a survival mechanism developed over our evolutionary past, as published in a 2009 article on Psychology Today by Editor Hara E. Marano. Psychologist Melissa Ann Newberry introduces a meta-analysis conducted in 2010 that compliments my theory that in over-all aspects jealousy functions across a variety of interpersonal contexts that allow the victim of jealousy to decide whether to be constructive or destructive with their aftermath. While society has an image of jealousy as being this monster of an emotion that engulfs the victim to act irrationally causing relationships to ultimately fail, for the purpose of my paper, we will be exploring how constructive jealousy can help build trust, self-esteem, and intimacy in a relationship. The importance of this issue arises for the purpose to preserve friendships and romantic relationships, the controversy of whether to act constructive or destructive is dictated by the victim will remain under further investigation. In this paper, I will explore academic research and scientific studies performed with intentions to gain a greater understanding of jealousy, and I will discuss the three main positions within the issue of whether to be constructive or destructive with jealousy.
The English word jealous originates from the Old French term gelos meaning keen, zealous; avaricious; jealous in the contexts of romance in the 14th century. More specifically, the Greek used a similar term, zelos, which meant jealous but was used in a righteous sense to define competition, rivalry, and zeal. (It is important to note that for the purposes of this paper, acknowledging early positive intentions and definitions about the origins of jealousy is vital for comprehending the controversy surrounding jealousy in todays society.) In a recent 2009 study, Ph.D. Psychologist C.R. Harris and P. Salovey conducted a social experiment performed on the relationships within households that correlate early jealousy in children as a response to competition of siblings [and other children] that rival each other to receive more attention from their guardians. This research proposes the idea that jealousy is a combination of multiple emotions (i.e., anger, fear, and sadness). In fact, these Psychologists discovered when all the emotions were released simultaneously during an episode of jealousy this eventually led to destructive and irrational behavior. Dr. Harris and Dr. Saloveys study revealed the best solution to prevent an outburst of jealousy was rather than experiencing several emotions at once, a person that experienced different emotions over the course of a single jealousy episode was found to be more therapeutic and beneficial both physically and mentally. Society, as a whole, recognizes and establishes a destructive connotation of jealousy most commonly originating in public areas. Melissa Ann Newberry, a Psychologist with a Masters of Arts in General Psychology, completed a meta-analysis in 2010 titled The Positive and Negative Effects of Jealousy on Relationship Quality: A Meta-Analysis. The main target audience for Newberrys analysis was intended for a Committee Member, Committee Chairperson, and the Dean of the University of North Florida for further review and approval. Newberrys main claim in her meta-analysis is to introduce the idea that long-lasting relationships are built on trust, but if jealousy stays persistent in the relationship then it erodes a foundation of trust that is essential to a successful relationship. In this concept, Newberry proposes there are three main categories of interpersonal contexts of jealousy types. She divides these main categories into three: anxious jealousy involves obsessions and suspicions about a partners potential behavior, possessive jealousy occurs when one goes to considerable efforts to prevent their partner from having intimate contact with a third person, and reactive jealousy operationalized as how one would respond if their partner engaged in intimate behaviors with a third person. When a victim becomes overwhelmed with emotion and becomes aware of their jealousy, this results in anxious and possessive outbursts and lash-outs. This theory uncovers the reason why society links jealousy to destructive behavior. (Newberry, 2010) Society plays a large role in our modern culture in order to label people and group them together. In the article Why is jealousy always given a negative connotation?, author Jeyshree Vanuvamali correlated negative response to unclear and irrational thinking. On the other hand, in order for jealousy to have a positive effect, Newberrys results found that reactive types had a positive association with jealousy by seeing how one would respond if their partner engaged in intimate behaviors with a third person. Newberry theorized that in further committed relationships jealousy is a sign for a lack of trust but in less committed relationships jealousy demonstrates a fear of losing investments. This helps me explore a neutral unbiased opinion by psychologists and publishers, such as Newberry and Vanuvamali, that allow me to give you, the reader, a deeper understanding and knowledge of jealousy. When evaluating ethos, logos, and pathos, we can understand that acting in a passionate response develops a negative result as for thinking logically and with clear evidence one can explore the constructive side of this issue. (Vanuvamalai, 2018)
The difference in gender may contribute to how jealousy works in inter-personal contexts depending on the stress of jealousy within one-self, male or female. In a 2002 article by Erica Goode, a publisher and editor for The New York Times, Jealous? Maybe Its Genetics. Maybe Not references that in adulthood women are more susceptible and distressed by emotional betrayal, as for men become more jealous over sexual infidelity by their partner. (Goode, 2002) Can one be productive with jealousy, explicitly the implementation of being constructive, and lift ones self-esteem? Is this due to insecurity within oneself? These variables are indefinite for a fact but psychologists such as Shauna Springer introduce a concept of jealousy that depicts the emotion as having similarities to a double blade sword. Springer relates destructive forms of jealousy to having a low self-esteem and [having] insecurity as being the first side of the double blade sword. This connotation of jealousy is negative because this threatens and has the potential to destroy relationships through extreme cases of anxiety, upset, and insecurity, which in turn leads to PTSD from sleeplessness, hypervigilance, irritability, and obsessive thoughts. The other half of Springers concept is rather the opposite of her first main claim. Springer elaborates on the idea of jealousy that by sharing insecurities, attractions, and the vulnerable feelings that are linked with the emotion jealousy is essential to build trust and intimacy in the relationship. This article allows us to explore destructive practices of jealousy that let us view what goes on and what can develop if one continues to fall in the same destructive pattern. I believe Springer leads her readers towards a common end goal I can coincide that can be found through research and dedication that acknowledges what to practice in order to find a constructive fashion to release built up emotion of jealousy. By presenting this evidence, I intend to guide you in correlating negative behaviors to traits of low self-esteem, neuroticism, insecurity, dependence, inadequacy, and anxiety to symptoms that lead to destructive outcomes due to the intense extremes of pathos in jealousy. In The Evolutionary Psychology of Envy and Jealousy written by Vilatanur S. Ramachandran and Jalal Baland, they proposes that acquiring a deeper understanding of the evolutionary rationale of negative emotions and behaviors could potentially be therapeutically beneficial. Their hypothesis states that the most complex aspects of human emotions [can be] driven by culture. Then reinforced by stating that a growing realization in the past two decades, culture has played a major role in the final expression of human nature, therefore there must be a basic scaffolding specified by genes. This ties into my theory that jealousy is excited by social triggers that explore a complexity of interpersonal contexts. When dealing with jealousy, the best angle to attack this green-eyed monster would be to stop, take a breather, then proceed to think rationally and logically in order to find valid evidence to all parties involved. In relationships, jealousy is an extremely controversial emotion that impacts a relationship positively or negatively. Nonetheless societys perception of jealousy will continue to be viewed as this monster that submerges the victim to have a jealousy episode, we explored how constructive jealousy can help build trust, self-esteem, and intimacy in a relationship. My goal was to teach those impacted by jealousy how to overcome and surpass these undesirable emotions in order for us to build trust and work on developing our self-confidence. The significance of this issue is to preserve friendships and romantic relationships. By evaluating academic research and scientific analyses, I intend to gain a greater understanding of jealousy in order to give knowledge to you the reader.
