Performing Hypothesis Tests for Proportions

Week 10 – Assignment: Performing Hypothesis Tests for Proportions
Instructions
Now that we have covered hypothesis tests for means, learning how to create hypothesis tests for proportions will be much easier. Many of the same principles apply. But some of the calculations are different. These will be studied in this assignment.
For this task, write a paper using the following structure:
Begin with a one or two-paragraph introduction that summarizes the meaning of the reading material.
Answer all of the questions included in Parts 1 and 2 below. Be sure to answer questions using complete sentences and show all work in your calculations.
Provide a written conclusion, when appropriate, for the problem that you are addressing.
Include an essay section in your paper, which is described in Part 3 below.
Use the last part of your paper to include a paragraph or two that explains the information that you learned in the assignment. Support your paper with at least two references.
Part 1
An opinion poll asks a random sample of 100 college juniors how they view their job prospects once they graduate. Out of the 100 students 53 said Excellent. Find a 95% confidence interval to estimate the proportion of college juniors who think their job prospects are excellent. Assume large samples.
In 1999, the Bureau of Justice Statistics3 indicated that 14% of violent crimes are committed by women. Suppose that a random sample of 400 people who committed violent crimes was taken and it was determined that 65 of the 400 were women. Find a large-sample 95% confidence interval based on the sample data. Determine if the 14% is contained in the confidence interval.
The IRS is trying to determine which percentage of tax returns claim itemized deductions. A random sample of 2,000 returns was taken and the IRS found that 663 claimed itemized deductions. Find a large-sample 90% confidence interval based on the sample data.
What are the conditions that must be checked when performing a test of proportions?
Part 2
Suppose that experts claim that 14% of violent crimes are committed by women. Is there enough evidence to use a benchmark of 0.05 to reject the claim, if in a sample of 400 violent crimes, 65 were committed by women? Use the four-step (state, plan, solve, conclude) process to answer this question.
Suppose that California Community Bank is testing the hypothesis that the proportion of deposit slips filled out incorrectly is 2%. A random sample of 1000 customers found that 28 completed the deposit slips incorrectly.
a) Identify the null and alternate hypotheses.
b) Determine if strong evidence exists to confirm that 2% of the deposit slips are filled out incorrectly?
c) If a benchmark of 0.05 was used for the p-value, would the null hypothesis be rejected, or do we fail to reject the null?
A member of IRS claims that 30% of tax filers claim itemized deductions. A random sample of 2,000 returns was taken and the IRS found that 663 claimed itemized deductions. Test the claim using the four-step process. Use a significance level of 0.10. Then, compare this problem to Problem 3 of Part 1.

Is there a character who represents someone or some issue from the era? Are there characters who function as members of the society of the time? Is there a political statement being made with the musical?

The main objective of the paper is to reveal how the show is a reflection of American life by using research and analysis of the musical itself to provide supporting evidence. Avoid using one of our focus musicals and merely summarizing the plot, and instead, analyze how the story and characters contribute to a social reflection, making sure that you focus on the lyrics and music and/or dance of at least three songs. You can also use background information about the librettist, lyricist and composer, details about the work itself (actors/singers, directors/choreographers, dialogue, etc.), and historical facts about the world outside the musical in order to draw parallels with the musical. It is always powerful to personalize, but keep the focus on the musical and your analysis of it, rather than on your own life. Here are some questions to help you in your analysis: How is the musical a reaction to something happening in the country at the time? Is there a character who represents someone or some issue from the era? Are there characters who function as members of the society of the time? Is there a political statement being made with the musical? Does the style of the music or staging reflect quality or issue of the world of the play/musical? How does the musical reflect the culture that produced it? In either case, you need to argue your position by explaining how specific examples from the musical support it (preferably songs). A dialogue sequence or a monologue from the libretto may serve your claim as evidence, but also consider the dramatic action (what happens in a scene), as well as characters, the lyrics of the songs, and the style of the music (which communicates feeling more directly than words). So, your goal is two-fold: to take us into the musical while also connecting with the society around it. Also, draw relevance to the work by making connections with another area of the Humanities, and show how your musical’s intentions were similar to the works of other writers, philosophers, or artists of the time. This paper requires more than a paraphrasing from Wikipedia or enotes.com; it demands that you read the actual libretto and/or view the work itself in some form, and apply your critical thinking to it. Do NOT choose one of the six musicals we have focused on in class. The experience is meant to be your own exploration of a work of your choice that does not simply repeat something already covered in class. The Research Paper should utilize at least 3 to 5 works as sources in the List of Works Cited and include at least 3 to 5 citations to those sources in the text. Citing your sources not only avoids plagiarism but gives your paper more credibility. Humanities follow MLA Documentation practice, and you need to use that system for this paper. It won’t hurt you to try a different format from what you may be used to. To acknowledge your sources in the text of the paper, type the author’s last name and a page number within parentheses at the end of the sentence that includes the authors idea or quotation (Parenthetical Documentation). Do not put whole titles or website addresses in a citation; you will only need a List of Works Cited page at the end of the paper (arranged alphabetically) instead of the usual Endnotes and Bibliography pages. These examples should help guide you, but for specific instructions on creating all forms of documentation, you should consult the MLA Guidelines.

In your responses to the application questions listed above, please make sure to address the following points: describe your research background, including any relevant scholarly and practical experience; identify one or more general areas within public policy in which you would like to do research; provide examples of specific topics, and any particular theories, ideas or methods you are interested in exploring, and describe how your research interests fit within one of our Schools three concentration areas (Governance, Social Policy and Inequality, and Innovation, Science and Technology). Facing reality Social policy typically refers to public and private programs that seek to improve the welfare of individuals and families. This policy area intersects directly with the issue of inequality, as disparities based on factors such as ethnicity, gender, and income impact the wellbeing and life changes of large segments of the population. More generally, social categories, including those based on religious affiliation and Aboriginal or non-Aboriginal status, have direct implications for social policies relating to notions of equality, citizenship, and national identity. In addition to the more focused areas of inquiry outlined below, scholars working within this cluster explore a number of basic questions about social policy and its relationship to inequality. Questions asked include: How can social programs effectively reduce key forms of social inequalities? How can we improve social policy financing to offset territorial disparities? How do different types of inequality intersect and what does this mean for social policy practice and research? What is the role of private actors in addressing social needs, and how do these collective actors interact with different levels of government? What are the particular social policy challenges related to more vulnerable populations such as indigenous peoples, new immigrants, and temporary foreign workers? How can we balance a quest for inclusion and basic equality associated with citizenship with fiscal challenges stemming from issues such as population aging and global economic competition? How does our constitutional framework including the Charter of Rights and Freedoms impact social policies in ways that may advance or undermine equality? Immigration The cross-border movement of people is by no means a new phenomenon, but is a pressing topic today. Mobility rights, access to education, social services, employment opportunities, and economic security raise complex social policy and equity-related issues. Considering the recent debate on the role of foreign migrant workers, this issue is especially interesting in the context of a discussion about immigration, as it deals directly with the interaction between transnational mobility and access to basic social rights for non-residents. Finally, the issue of borders and their meaning for inequality and social policy is a major yet understudied problem that must be tackled. Scholars from JSGS are studying these and other topics related to immigration and social policy through international collaborations. A bit about Saskatchewan province: Saskatchewan province is bordered on the west by Alberta province, on the Northwest Territories, on the east by Manitoba province, and on the south by the U.S state on Montana and North Dakota. The capital city of Saskatchewan is REGINA. How have social media sites such as Facebook, Instagram, SnapChat, and others, affected the presentation of self?

1- Is it possible for sociologists to be value-free when conducting sociological research? How do sociologists try to remove their personal biases? In what ways can the scientific method help to ensure a value free perspective toward research? Be sure to use information from Chapter 2 in your book in order to support your answer.2- Think about a topic that you think would be interesting for sociological research. Using what you learned in Chapter 2, write a research question about the topic. Then, discuss which research methodology you think would be the most appropriate for this research. Why is this the best method? How would you set up the study? Finally, would there be any important ethical considerations to keep in mind if one were to conduct this research?3- Choose two agents of socialization presented in Chapter 4: family, teachers, peers, religion, work, mass media, or a total institution. (If you are writing about a total institution, please be sure to identify it as such and demonstrate that it fits into the category of a “total institution”.)Discuss the various ways that your chosen agents influence us. Give concrete examples. Consider both the negative and positive aspects of socialization for each of your chosen agents. (Your response should show an understanding of the term “socialization. )4- Review Goffman’s ideas in the chapter about social interaction and the presentation of self. How have social media sites such as Facebook, Instagram, SnapChat, and others, affected the presentation of self? Might our virtual presence change the way Goffman described our front and back stage selves? In what ways might Cooley and Mead add to this understanding?Put simply, (how) has the virtual world changed the development and/or presentation of self?
