The objective of this assignment is for you to develop your own researched stance on a topic and position it in relation to a variety of other viewpoints (i.e. sources), and to think about how those other viewpoints work alongside your own to shape your beliefs. Remember that ‘advertising’ isn’t just limited to TV, print, or Internet ads that sell products. Many different concepts are ‘advertised’ to the masses to encourage people to accept them. This literally applies to almost everything, so aim for creativity and originality. BEGINNING WITH readings Weasel words: the art of saying nothing at all, new and improved section of Language Awareness that will form your basis for discussion, craft a solid POLICY claim (prefaced by appropriate fact and value claims) concerning an issue that interests you. Then, discover research sources in which the various authors either seem to support your ideas in some way, or express ideas in opposition to yours that you might refute to demonstrate your thesis. In this essay, you must specifically situate your FACT, VALUE, & POLICY CLAIMS in relation to Weasel words: the art of saying nothing at all, new and improved, we are exploring in Language Awareness. you are welcome and encouraged to use, in addition, anything else from the text that discusses the ways language and images are used to persuade. Research Parameters: You must meaningfully include *at least* one essay from our (enclosed file) readings on these topics. You may also wish to refer to other books or essays youve read, films youve seen, television/media to which you have been exposed, or other influences that relate to your topic. In total, you must include a minimum of eight forms of research: at least four (4) of them must be standard academic library sources (i.e., books, journals, magazines, etc.) and no more than three (3) of them may be reputable Internet sources. Any number of them may come from our textbook, Language Awareness (these count as standard academic sources, as mentioned above). Reference materials, such as encyclopedias and dictionaries, do not count as library research due to their limited scope in terms of critical knowledge. In the end, to be successful with a paper of this length, you will cite a minimum of 8 reputable academic-quality sources. You must provide digital copies of or immediate access to your cited source materials, whether from print (provide a file or image) or Internet sources (provide working URLs in the Works Cited), when you submit your project or your essay will not be read or graded. Requirements: The final polished draft of your essay must be 8+ pages (2000+ words), not including your works cited, well edited, and formatted and documented in correct MLA format – including parenthetical citation and a works cited page. You will need to show at least three drafts (1st, 2nd, final) with substantial and purposeful revisions to receive basic credit for this assignment.
