Verbal Tense and Aspect and Second Language Acquisition

The input for progressive tends to be less noisy in the sense that the verbs most strongly associated with the progressive also tend to be the most frequent whereas the verbs most closely related to past tense may occupy relatively lower frequent bands” and in page 366 we find: “…the learner data suggest that the verbs first learned by adults in the progressive are also frequent in the progressive in the input…” Can the top-writer write something about this argument especially to emphasize the importance of Chaos/Complexity theory (uploaded Chapter 2). 1. Let’s say that although the progressive aspect in the Maltese language (example: is writing, is eating) is not used a lot as a first language and as a second language, and we appreciate the fact that the aspect (ex: ‘He eats’) that though it is not progressive but it is aspect in Maltese, and the learners learn it before the tense in the perfect (example: he ate) 2. Wulff et al. claim that the students learn the progressive before the perfect because it is very frequently used in the input, which means that the native speakers use it a lot 3. However this does not count for the Maltese language because as an L1, the Maltese native speakers use more the perfect tense. Although we do not have any statistics of what my foreign/non-native participants might have heard in their daily life, from my study data we know that this tendency is clearly so . 4. Hence, in the case of Maltese, we cannot say that there is an obvious correspondence from the input that the foreign speakers hear from the native speakers and the output of theforeign speakers who are learning Maltese as a second language. 5.In fact, Wulff et al. (and perhaps even Bardovi-Harlig, 2000 and kindly use this source too) seem to be following the theory of constructivism ( what learners hear before they produce), that in the case of Maltese, we have the evidence through my study that this does not work, because the foreign learners used more the imperfect and the progressive whereas the native speakers use more the perfect tense and aspect when interpreting pictures.Hence the theory of Chaos/Complexity theory is more robust…valid and reliable.

How well you have used theories, academic knowledge and statements of current good practice which are relevant to technology, digital marketing, segmentation, targeting and positioning (STP), marketing strategy and the extended marketing mix and how well you have referenced these.

Like any consultant it makes sense for you to carryout secondary (academic theories for STP, marketing strategy andthe marketing mix) and primary research, particularly to provide your chosen business with new information and not with what they already know.

Primary research can take the form of ethnographic/netnographic research (participant observation), interviews, questionnaires, etc.

The key areas to investigate include a SWOT analysis (from their weaknesses you can figure out in what area they need more help), what use of technology are they making at the moment? What else could be done? What is their segmentation, targeting and positioning (STP) strategy? What customers buy from them and why? Is there any gap in the market? What is their unique selling preposition (USP)? What is their branding strategy, what else could be done?, How is your chosen company using the marketing mix? How can they improve on their traditional and contemporary marketing(oldand newmarketing DNA)?

Areas to focus on:

Introduction to the issue:

The clarity of the background information or the context of the report and your statement of the problem. A SWOT analysis can be included here, maybe inside a table and more details can be given in an appendix.

Application:

The quality and completeness of your analysis with regard to the organisational situation, data and facts gathered with respect to the investigation (both secondary and primary research). Primary research can include ethnographic/ netnographic research (participant observation), as well as interviews or/and questionnaire surveys, etc.

Evaluation/analysis:

The degree of critical evaluation of the evidence about the issue in the light of the concepts developed.

Conclusions:

The plausibility of your opinions in the light of the organisational context and the implications for management in your conclusions.

Recommendations:

The feasibility of the recommendations in terms of cost, practicability and acceptability to the organisation and the likely implementation time span.

Overall presentation of your report:

The quality of the structure, organisation of material, flow of language, information and argument and the visual impact of the data gathered.

Get the right balance between marketing theories from books and journals and practical application.

Avoid the temptation to be very strong on application and weak on including and referencing theory and vice-versa.

At this high level it becomes increasingly important that you use an evaluative writing style and that you are critical of current practice as well as academic theory if relevant.

This needs to be backed up with evidence and factual justification.

The study must be clearly structured and well presented. Quality of report? – structure, executive summary, contents page, use of headings, referencing of appendix, sources of information, number of words (approx 3,000) Clearly referenced ( Good use of academic sources?)
