Research title/question: The Storytelling of the Old Masters (paintings) in the 21st century: how to interpret the histories of the paintings through the sense of smell and aesthetic design practice. Practice-based research. Short background description: It has been observed that the Old Masters appear no longer to be appreciated by the masses, as in general people do not have the knowledge of the different works historical contexts. Hence, it can be argued that this has resulted in a lack of appreciation of the older masterpieces, their loss of relevance to daily lives and a marked downfall in sales. However, without the Old Masters, Contemporary Art may well not be in existence. The Old Masters form a framework of study within art education and act as an integral element within the art world. Research in this field has not yet arrived at a conclusive understanding of how aesthetic (communication) design might be usefully employed to communicate and educate the existing communities of arts enthusiasts and collectors. Thus it is argued that there is a significant scope for this line of enquiry to be developed within both research and design contexts. Key subject areas: Communication design and History of Art. To use elements of other disciplines, including chemistry, curation and museology. Please make sure the terminology for ‘The Old Masters’ and ‘aesthetic design’ is included and discussed within the proposal, as it form an integral point for the research. Note: the term ‘Old Masters’ is currently referred as the paintings of the Masters from 13th century – 18th century. Please do emphasise on this. Due to the topic being a little broad, there will be a particular focus on the 18th century – Rococo Art Movement, where by paintings by Thomas Gainsborough and Joshua Reynolds will be examined and analysed, to uncover the reasons behind the paintings and the stories that they tell. Then these histories (historical contexts) will be interpreted through smells and (aesthetic) design. The study poses the question of how smell and aesthetic design can be harnessed to educate the audiences about history of art in a museum setting and / or a gallery space. The study of semiotics may apply for the method of observing and analysing paintings. (the sign/signifier/signified – connotation/denotation). Further sub research questions may apply such as: 1. What were the aesthetic goals, movements and technical practices of the 18th century artists? 2. What possibilities does smell offers for use in old master paintings? How does interpreting narratives through the sense of smell impact on design thinking, processes and method? (eg. What skill sets are required, what knowledge-base does one have to draw upon etc). 3. How can smells be used and the problems one may encounter when working with them? (ie. environmental conditions such as temperature, humidity, and materials. Social aspects, cultural habits and psychological connotations). The main categories which need to be included within the research proposal are as follows: Title / Question, Research Statement, Research Context, Aims and Objectives, Research Questions, Research Methods, Significance of Research, Bibliography.
