Choose a rhetorical artifact (speech, video, position paper, website, etc.) that you find interesting, relevant, and/or important to your personal interests.

As mentioned, this artifact may be a traditional speech or a more broadly defined set of messages that can also be described and understood rhetorically. Remember, as a critic, you are defining rhetoric as a broader perspective interested in the ways in which people influence each other through symbols. Following Campbells elements of descriptive analysis as outlined in chapter two of your text, analyze this rhetorical artifact from each of the seven perspectives described: purpose, audience, persona, tone, evidence, structure, and strategies. Remember, each element need not be given equal weight, i.e., you may only briefly touch on evidence while giving more extensive coverage to the tone of the piece and/or the strategies used by the rhetor. In writing your descriptive analysis, you should use the general format as outlined in your text (see Campbells analysis of Lincolns Gettysburg Address and Martin Luther King Jrs April 1968 speech). Use Campbells critical equation and the examples as a guide to get you started, but each analysis will obviously be different depending on the artifact you are analyzing.

Read Chapter 8 in your textbook on “Rhetorical Analysis” (pp. 218-249). The chapter outlines the basic requirements for writing a rhetorical analysis. The author also provides you with several professional and student examples.

Read/peruse Chapter 69 (pp. 912-937), as well, for more examples. After looking at the chapters, I’d like you to write your own rhetorical analysis essay on a topic of your choice. – Rhetorical Analysis Paper, to submit this assignment. When you submit your essay, it will be checked against several databases for original content using the SafeAssign feature. Purpose The first page of Chapter 8 in your textbook highlights the importance of rhetorical analysis in your lives today. The author illustrates the importance by citing editorials, course evaluations, blogs, and news as bases for rhetorical analysis. However, the rhetorical analysis is important because it fosters creative and higher-level thinking, and it encourages you to provide your own “thinking outside of the box” ideas to your writing and to your assignments. After completing the rhetorical analysis paper, you will “read” the world in a new, closer way. But, this skill (analysis) is one that you will use the rest of your college career, as well as in your future jobs. Grading This rhetorical analysis is worth 150 points toward your course total. Business Letter & Proposal Clear thesis & description of piece to be analyzed 20 points Well-organized, cohesive paragraphs & essay; transitions are used effectively 30 points Discusses rhetorical strategies used in the chosen piece (specifically, pathos, ethos, and logos) but can use other strategies in addition to these 30 points Contains at least 2 credible sources/pieces of evidence, documented in the Works Cited page and via in-text citations (the piece being analyzed does NOT count as one of the sources) 20 points Free of grammatical, punctuation, and spelling errors 20 points Includes Works Cited page & in-text citations, and BOTH use correct 2016 MLA citation style; essay is formatted according to MLA guidelines 30 points Tip: The thesis for your rhetorical analysis paper should include the following: a) The piece that you are critiquing b) The purpose/overall effect of the piece c) The rhetorical appeals that the author(s) use(s) Ex: The SPCA commercials use pathos, music, and celebrities in order to both prevent animal abuse and to encourage people to adopt rescue animals.

Defend a position on an essential debate in the field of African American history: the extent to which African Americans were active agents or passive participants in early American history.

Final paper must be submitted as a 7- to 8-page (not including bibliography or endnotes) Microsoft Word document with double spacing, 12-point Times New Roman font, and one-inch margins. You must use at least eight sources integrated into your paper, properly cited in Turabian format, with a bibliography. These eight sources should include a mix of primary and secondary sources and may include course materials.

How does the artifact illustrate credibility? What emotions are developed in the image? How about logical argument?

The Aristotelian proof project is similar in that you will engage in an organized form of analysis/criticism of a specific rhetorical artifact. Once again, you should choose a rhetorical artifact that you find interesting, relevant, and/or important . This time, you should choose an artifact that has a visual element (photograph, symbol, film, television) or has other nonverbal aspects such as musical or audio dimensions. You might choose a historical example (iconic images, historical photos, etc.), a more contemporary image, a symbol, or a short video. Please, no full movie reviews (!), but socially conscious videos, commercials, etc. are all fair game. As before, your goal is to analyze the particular artifact in a developed and organized way. Instead of the seven elements of descriptive analysis, you will use the three basic Aristotelian proofs (ethos, logos, pathos) as your organizing principle. As before, some elements may receive more emphasis than others, but each should be addressed in some way. Your goal is to analyze your particular artifact in a developed way using the three proofs as your organizing principle. In addition to the Campbell text (including Chapter 12 on Visual Rhetoric) and our lectures/discussions in the coming days

Identify and sort through the relevant facts presented by Dave’s situation. What tools or interviewing strategies would you use to assess his drinking and its impact? What do you assess his drinking risk to be? Why?

This is a Master Social Work assignment Dave Case Study Dave, age 38 Dave is a 38-year-old small-parts factory worker who came into the treatment center after being arrested for drinking and driving (DUI/DWI). His attorney has suggested that he quit drinking and enter treatment, at least until his trial which is scheduled in two months. Dave does not anticipate serving jail time, but he believes that treatment could strengthen his legal case. After his first arrest for DUI two years ago, he simply paid a fine and attended a special driver’s education program for six weeks. Dave found the program to be “a waste of time.”? Dave has been married for 10 years and has two sons aged 8 and 6 years. He has had numerous arguments with his wife, Melanie, concerning his drinking. He gets very angry and defensive when she confronts him about his heavy drinking, and asserts that he is not an alcoholic. He knows this is true because his father was an alcoholic and Dave says that he is not like his father. His father died as the result of a fight that occurred in traffic when he was drunk. Dave says that his father used to “beat the tar out” of him and his brother when he was drunk, and that his father always belittled, taunted, and threatened their mother, whether he was drunk or sober. Dave’s work history is very good; he misses less than one day per year. He works the day shift on weekdays, putting in time-and-a-half overtime on most Saturdays. He is well regarded by his supervisors and peers at work. He is fearful that his employer will find out about his treatment (it is being covered by his HMO), and that people at work will learn about the second DUI arrest.? Dave drinks with his buddies from the plant, and does not think that his drinking is any more than what they do. He was just “unlucky” and got caught doing what everyone else seems to get away with. Dave’s drinking is very predictable: he drinks 8 or 9 beers on a weeknight. Several of these are consumed at the bar with friends, the remainder at home over the course of the evening. He usually falls asleep in front of the television. On weekends, he often drinks 3-4 twelve packs between Friday and Sunday. A typical Saturday involves getting up at 10:00 a.m., playing soccer with friends, and going to the bar for the rest of the day and night. This pattern leads to arguments with Melanie, who calls him a “lousy father.” At times, Dave has had unsettling episodes of being unable to recall what happened while drinking. He has commented to friends that “maybe I overdo it a bit.” Several times, he has attempted to cut down on his drinking, especially after the last DUI. He once attended a few AA meetings, but did not feel that it was helpful: “It was listening to a lot of guys whining” and he especially did not care for the prayers. ? Despite these attempts, Dave has experienced increased consumption levels over the past two years. He admits that, as a result of the drinking, he has become increasingly estranged from his wife and sons. Dave feels that his marriage has been basically good, but that he would not blame Melanie for leaving him, the way things have been going lately. She will no longer “sleep” with him while he is intoxicated, which occurs regularly. She complains that the house is “falling apart” because Dave does not keep up with his chores. He believes that his marriage would become solid again, if he stopped over doing the drinking. But, he complains about her hassling him about the alcohol. Dave is not close to his remaining family members. His mother is very religious and wishes Dave would see religion as a way out of his problems. His siblings live in other communities and they rarely get together. His wife and sons regularly attend his mother’s church, but Dave only attends on Christmas Eve and Easter Sunday. ? Dave is distraught about having to remain abstinent in preparation for the trial. He has trouble getting to sleep without alcohol. He also “gets jumpy” when he tries to stay away from drinking, feeling “closed in” or “like he is suffocating.” He also cannot imagine how to explain to his buddies why he is not joining them in the bars. 2. Identify the problems, issues, and concerns that arise with Dave’s situation.? 2a. What information should you be certain is shared with Dave? Why?? 2b. What is your advice to Dave concerning his drinking? Why?? 3. Identify the positive and strengths aspects of Dave’s situation.
