Society has put its laws for both sexes and determined the role of each gender in life even before they are born. People open their eyes have no other choice but to follow, behave, and live their journey according to the gender roles of the society. This society drew only two columns for people, and every person falls under one of them according to his/her sex. Males are classified as masculine and females as feminine, respectively. By masculine, the male has to be a man, handsome, strong, tough, provider, aggressive, independent, and protective, superhero, etc… While the female has to be thin, beautiful, soft, smart, housekeeper, perfect, and so on and so forth. The society sets and limits every gender’s specifications, how to act, appear, behave, and even talk. Males cannot wear skirts and high heels and females cannot wear ties and must know how to cook and clean in order for them to be accepted in the society. Marge Piercy and Sharon Olds described the power of society on both sexes in their two poems “Barbie Doll” and “Rite of Passage” and how the social pressures are placed upon girls and boys in our society to live up to some ideal sense of femininity and masculinity.
In “Barbie doll’, Marge Peircy showed how society forced women to struggle in the societal issues to become perfect. At the beginning of the poem, she described how the life of every girl child is supposed to be by mentioning the word “as usual”, where girls’ interests are limited by dolls, manicure, and lipsticks. As the girl was growing up, she kept trying to stay healthy and polite to satisfy and perfectly fit the society. Perhaps that is what the society had taught her how to be herself. Unfortunately, it cost the girl her life at the end. This poem personifies the true life of every woman in the society. As of today, women are tied with gender restrictions which are born with them, just to be accepted in the society.
In contrast, Sharon Olds described in her poem “Rite of Passage” how boys are raised in the society. They must play the man role in order for them to come through. She described the behavior of the six and seven young boys as they are short men in first grade, how they act, talk, and fight with each other like old and mature men. Their aggressive actions are to prove their masculinity so that they keep their self-recognized place in society. Stating that boys at the age of seven playing death (war) and celebrating the boy’s life (birthday) shows the violent image. In order for any man to show his masculinity, he has to show how strong he is. No fear of anything or anyone, even from war and death, or else he becomes a chicken. It is very disappointing to see kids at a younger age, instead of living a simple and pure childhood, are being influenced and living a life full of sexism just to be socially accepted.
The two poem are very similar as they show the role of both genders in life and how people are satisfied with these roles and have become adapted to them. Even if this is not what they internally want to be, they only care about how to be accepted by others and prove themselves that they are able to perfectly play the gender role in society. People who decided to break the social rules have suffered from societal isolation just because they chose to be themselves. Where is the problem if men like wearing pink, piercing, or even makeup? Why couldn’t boys play with Barbie dolls? Who said that girls cannot be fat or hairy, change a flat tire, or even participate in sports? Why don’t people become who they want and do what they want of the society and other people if they will accept or not. Why would a person who is likes to have a sexual relationship with another person of the same sex be considered sick or gay? People who chose to live their life not restricted to these gender roles aren’t sick, but sexism has really become a social disease, limiting the abilities and the interests of people under the title of gender.
It is also true that the two sexes have a lot of biological differences and when they were both created, they were to complete each other. However, people do not argue about the difference of the biological sexes. The problem that people are suffering from is the social sexism. Why cant both sexes be treated the same in the society? Why cant both males and females have the same social rights? Believe it or not, no matter how the society improves, sexism will remain a big social problem that will never be solved. Men will remain the source of power, and female will remain the source of softness and beauty. To reduce the problem of sexism in the society, people have to look at themselves and do what they really want to do without thinking of people and society whether they will accept them or not. Limiting the societal ties will help both males and females.
