research essay that will consolidate all that you have learnt in this course. You should build the feedback into your essay that you have received on your presentation and your blog. Remember that you may only do the same topic twice across the assessments (ie you can cover the same topic for your essay and either your blog OR your seminar but not both).

Your essay should be in a classic academic research essay format. For this course, this means that you should not have subheadings in your essay and that you require a substantial introduction and conclusion and a clear, succinct line of argument that you follow closely throughout your essay. Such an essay needs to have a thesis statement (which should come near the end of your introduction and should then be reiterated in your conclusion). You should put this thesis statement together the way that you did for the blog and it should guide all of your writing. In other words, your thesis statement should say something like : ‘this essay will argue that to understand contemporary issue X we need to unpack the history and influence of idea set/weekly topic Y on this issue’. Unlike in the blog, you will be able to give more weight to the Y part of your thesis in this essay. However, you should not merely write out a lecture explaining an idea set – you need to relate/apply your idea set to your contemporary issue to make your historical analysis meaningful. You do not need to do any obtrusive research (for example, interviews or surveys) for this essay. All you need is texts and your own observations and ideas.

write a 1,000-word op-ed that will appear in the Los Angeles Times. The editors want you to explore issues related to technology and social media, areas they feel that someone your age is uniquely qualified to address.

ScenarioThe opinion editors at the Los Angeles Times would like to do a better job representing a diverse set of voices. Lately theyve felt the opinion section (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. has been ignoring the views of younger adult readers (e.g. milennials, recent high school grads, single unmarried adults, college students, etc.). This is why theyre reaching out to youthey want to hear your perspective on the problems facing Southern California, the nation, and the globe. Still they want to give you a little freedom in terms of topic.Above all, they want your article to be feel current, fresh, and relevant to readers of the Los Angeles Times, so their first piece of advice is to follow the news. Visit the LA Times (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. or any other credible news source to get a feel for what’s happening in the world related to how information technology is shaping the way we interact with one another in ways big and small. If you need more guidance, feel free to think about the following areas as you browse the news and reflect on your own writing interests:ideological diversity and segregation
bias, motivated reasoning
democracy in a digital age
truth and misinformation online
the Library of Everything
online conversations
the future of social media
hard vs. soft news
extremism online
online consumption of news
filters, filter bubbles, social media algorithms
echo chambers
If you want to veer way off this list, the editors ask you get in touch with them to get prior approval.FormattingThe Los Angeles Times editors caution you from approaching this task like the academic papers you probably do in class. They encourage you to learn a little more about the genre of opinion pieces/op-eds through a helpful article by one of the editors (Op-Ed, explained (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.) and a general web search (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. so you can appreciate how op-eds may differ from genres of writing you have done in the past. They also recommend that you get a feel for style and audience of the Los Angeles by spending time on the site. You should also look at the opinion sections of many major newspapers, cultural websites and magazines like The New York Times, The Atlantic, Time, The New Yorker, The Washington Post, and Slate, to name a few.SourcesGiven the nature of your article, the Los Angeles Times expects a mix of outside evidence and personal experience. Theyre okay with personal experience as long as you back things up with some sort of proof. At the bare minimum, they request that you incorporate evidence from at least two credible outside sources. Since these editors do not know you very well yet, they also ask that you send them a brief email describing the sources and how you used them (like in an annotated bibliography).

Write a tentative thesis statement: a single sentence outlining the position you could possibly take in your essay. Make sure it is arguable and significant.

3. Create an APA citation for each of the 6 sources you will use in your essay
4. Create an annotation for 3 of your sources. In a paragraph of 150-200 words: o briefly summarize the source in your own words explain how you might use the source in your paper
Sample annotated bibliographyTopic:
Installing fare gates at SkyTrain stations
Tentative thesis statement:
The installation of turnstiles at SkyTrain stations will reduce fare evasion and increase rider safety if combined with other methods such as an increased transit police presence.

A market research group conducted a phone survey for the BC Ministry of
Transportation that canvassed 500 Lower mainland residents about SkyTrain. The survey addressed various aspects of the Lower Mainland’s transit systemefficiency, safety, cleanliness, cost etc. The article focusses on the idea that safety is one of the main reasons people do not take SkyTrain. Respondents claim that was safer, it would be their preferred mode of transportation. The statistics in this report will be of great benefit to my argument as they show that 80% of riders are most concerned about SkyTrain safety and not fare evasion.l can use this article to support my argument that even if people were not concerned about fare evasion, the focus on safety makes the turnstiles a great idea that will solve two problems.

Select one cultural object from the course, and write an essay for a reader from the future that offers a detailed analysis of your chosen object, describing what makes the object an instructive representation of black life/culture in its historical moment. Is it offering effective reinforcement of a widely held sentiment about blackness in its time?

Is it offering a strong challenge to a widely held sentiment about blackness in its time? Is it sidestepping widely held sentiments about blackness to convey something different about blackness in the time of its creation and initial circulation?NOTE: I have attached my syllabus to the list of additional files so that you can chose from the cultural objects either in one of the assigned readings, or one of the assigned readings themselves if that is applicable.
