You should also have a copy of the t-shirt, bumper sticker, or an internet meme (that you can attach to the paper). Analyzing an Argument Worksheet

As part of the outline, you should include a tentative thesis which must do the following:State the topic of the essay (what t-shirt or bumper sticker are you analyzing?)State the main idea of the essay (what is the theme of the t-shirt or bumper sticker are you analyzing?)(Optional) State the organizational plan for the paper (will you be using description, argumentation, cause/effect, etc. in this paper
Thus, a sample outline might look like this: Opening generalization (narrative) I found the t-shirt while perusing Cloydrivers.com, a site that my daughter occasionally references in her twitter timeline.Thesis: In the t-shirt known as Presidential Fight Club, there exists a strong emphasis on the masculinity of previous male presidents, revealing a desire for strength and power that some see lacking in the current American male; this is depicted through the image of the shirt, the effects of the shirt on the audience, a comparison with an iconic film, and finally through the ethos of the writer.Paragraph #1 (description)
Begin with a description of the black t-shirt (common) and then describe the presidents on the shirt from the foreground to background.Paragraph #2 (effects)

What have you found out about this play, its first production, and the playwright?

You will choose a play to research. In your paper, you will examine the importance of the play you chose in its sociological, cultural, and historical context. It is up to you to create your own thesis statement for the paper. (If you would like to choose a different play than one weve read this semester please speak to me first.) Your paper should be no less than 800 words and no more than 1200 words. Aim for 1000 words! You are expected to conduct research on the play and should cite and provide a bibliographical reference for three RELIABLE LIBRARY sources. NO WIKIPEDIA. You should conduct research via the LIBRARY. Try CUNY OneSearch. Reviews of your chosen play can be very helpful.Your essay should have a main idea or thesis (thesis statement should be one sentence). I recommend that after you have read the play carefully, you conduct some research via CUNY OneSearch, and from what you find, write out your ideas in a brainstorming session. Here are some things to think about: How does the play fit in with theatre at the time? What social issues come up in this play through the characters and their actions, and how were these issues received by audiences? Discussed in reviews at the time? Did the play meet with success or not? Why? You may choose to look at several productions of the play one could be the original and one could be more recent. From what you find, how has the reception of this play changed over time? Is the play still relevant? Why? (Obviously this will differ with newer plays!) Consider ideas such as: how does the play fit into theatrical genres and theatrical movements (i.e., melodrama, comedy, tragedy; realism, naturalism, symbolism, etc.). To create your thesis, here are some things to think about: How does your chosen play deal with ideology, power, society, politics? Does it present a picture of society as unequal? How? Does it offer an example of theatre Of, By, and For the People (i.e., popular?) in what way(s)? How does the play portray gender? How does it portray culture? These are suggestions to consider. They are meant to help you think through the information you find out about the play and move toward coming up with your own thesis/argument about the play. They are not meant to be a list of questions you must answer in your paper. In addition to the above, keep in mind that any essay should be organized and have a thesis statement. So dont forget to include: An introduction paragraph that previews the essay and provides a one-sentence thesis statement. Supporting paragraphs that each contain ONE main idea to back up your thesis statement. A conclusion paragraph in which you summarize your argument. There is no need to provide an extensive plot summary of the play. You may include a short (few sentences) summary, but the essays focus should be on the plays context. Same goes for characters. Characters can be introduced in your paper with brief descriptions (e.g., Mrs. Linde, Noras childhood friend). I suggest you write an outline, which I am happy to look over and give feedback on as long as you give it to me at least two weeks before the due date. FINDING RELIABLE RESEARCH SOURCES: Use the BCC LIBRARY. Print / save a PDF of what you find. I will not consider an unreliable source as a research source! If you have any questions about your sources, then show them to me. Papers should be double-spaced, I suggest Times New Roman font 12 point or similar. Page count doesnt matter I will look at word count.
