n what ways does UTC’s corporate-level strategy of unrelated diversification create value?

CLOSING CASE: page 185 Text book Essentials of Strategic Management” by Hill and Jones, 2nd edition South Western
United Technologies Has an Ace in its pocket

Hartford, Connecticut based United Technologies Corporation (UTC) is a conglomerate that owns companies such as Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation, Pratt & Whitney (maker of aircraft engines), Otis Elevator Company, Carrier air conditioning, and Chubb, the security and lock maker that UTC acquired in 2003. Conglomerates like UTC are typically discounted by the investors, who question whether managers really have the expertise to manage a corporation that has interests in widely different industries. As a result, many erstwhile conglomerates, such as ITT and Greyhound-Dial have been broken up. UTC CEO George David claims that his conglomerate is unique and adds value across UTC’s diverse businesses. He rose up the ranks in UTC’s Otis division, and after he became the CEO, aimed to champion the same kind of quality and efficiency improvements that had transformed Otis into a highly profitable division. These improvements were collectively called Achieving Competitive Excellence, or ACE. ACE’s goal is to find ways to improve quality and reliability, to lower costs of making the product, and especially to find ways to make the next generation of a particular product perform better – in other words, to encourage technological innovation
DISCUSSION ASSIGNMENT
There are 3 parts to this discussion. YOU ARE TO ANSWER THEM INDIVIDUALLY BY NUMBER AND NOT BLEND YOUR ANSWERS Together

2. What are the dangers and disadvantages of this strategy?
3. Collect some recent information on UTC from sources like Wall Street Journal, Hoovers,Yahoo! Finance, etc. How successful has it been in pursuing its strategy? YOU ARE TO CITE at least 2 references here!…be specific

Prepare a spread sheet that starts with a listing of the top twenty countries in the world ranked in order based on the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) /per capita income.

Consumer Behavior Marketing 30001
Assignment Number One Fall Semester 2015 Ten Points
Due no later than Tuesday November 24

Following your graduation from The University, you are offered a Marketing Research position with a large national corporation which is considering expanding into global markets. The current product line is directed toward adults between the ages of 25 and 64. Considering your background in Marketing Research and your interest in the international arena, your first assignment is to identify countries that offer the greatest potential for the company. The President of the corporation encourages you to complete your review based strictly on current populations and projected growth in the next thirty five years to the year 2050. However your boss, who is the Vice-President of Marketing, while acknowledging the importance of population numbers and demographics suggests that you broaden your research to include economic factors as well. The president agrees. You meet with both individuals and recommend two separate reports for their review and further analysis. (Note – some of the additional analysis will be included on your final exam.)
The first report based on current populations, age demographics and projected population growth requires a spread sheet to include a listing of the Top Twenty countries in the world based on current population numbers and the following information:
A. A column showing the most recent population numbers (2014)
B. A column showing the rank in the top twenty based on current population numbers
C. The current population of two separate age groups:
1. Between 15 and 24
2. Between 25 and 64
Please include the actual numbers and the percentage of the population – some math required.
D. A column showing the projected population in the year 2050
E. A column showing the projected rank of the top twenty (some countries may need to be added to the bottom) and world ranking of the original top twenty (some analysis required)
F. The number of Internet Users in 2014 for the countries in column one and the percentage of penetration of internet users
G. The overall internet usage rank of the top twenty counties by population based on penetration percentages not on the actual number of internet users.

While there is some overlap to the two reports, the second report focuses more on economic conditions and there significance to international expansion. This report also requires a spread sheet that starts with a listing of the top twenty countries in the world ranked in order based on the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) /per capita income. This report should include the following:
A. A column showing the GDP in millions and American Dollars (World Bank data)
B. The numerical Rank based on GDP
C. A column showing the GDP(nominal)/Per Capita Income for the Top Twenty (World Bank data)
D. A column showing the overall world ranking for the top twenty (column one)
Countries based on PCI*
E. A column showing the unemployment percentage for each of the countries in column one*
F. A column showing the countries unemployment rankings in the top twenty
G. A column showing the percentage of the population falling below the poverty rate for the countries in column*
H. A column showing the countries poverty ranking in the top twenty

*For analytical, educational and informational purposes, you should print out and retain lists of the top 50 countries of the world based on:
o Per Capita Income
o Unemployment Rates
o Poverty Levels
Finally, it is a given that you will continue to market your products in the United States. Therefore despite its inclusion in your analytical reports, it cannot be included in your any of your three summary reports required below.
1. Based on the first report which considers populations and demographics identify the top three countries you would recommend for expansion and briefly explain why. Do not include the United States.
2. Based on the second report which is based more on economic factors, identify the top three countries you would recommend for expansion and briefly explain why. The United States should not be included.
3. Analyze both reports and indicate which three countries you would recommend overall.

Please make a copy of your reports and documentation as you may find them useful in the future.

Discuss Consumer Behavior.

Chapter 1
Introduction to Consumer Behavior

Consumer behavior is the study of the processes involved when individuals or groups select, purchase, use, or dispose of products, services, ideas, or experiences to satisfy needs and desires.

1) Consumers are actors on the marketplace stage.
2) Consumer behavior is a process (stages).
3) Consumer behavior involves many different roles.
Consumer Behavior and Marketing Strategy

If the basic premise of marketing is that firms exist to satisfy consumers’ needs, then understanding the consumer is key to developing strategies that will lead to business success.

The market is segmented – consumers are grouped based on similarities, and then the firm devises strategies to appeal to one or more groups. There are many ways to segment a market:

• Behavioural segmentation – e.g. usage rate (such as heavy users of the product), usage occasion, etc.
• Demographic segmentation – population statistics such as age, income, gender, geographical distribution, social class, family structure, race, and ethnicity.
• Psychographic segmentation – values, activities, and the ways that people see themselves.

Relationship marketing occurs when a company makes an effort to interact with customers on a regular basis, giving them reasons to maintain a bond with the company over time.

Database marketing involves tracking consumers’ buying habits very closely and crafting products and messages tailored precisely to people’s wants and needs based on this information. Wal-Mart is a good example of a company that effectively utilizes database marketing.

What databases might you be in? How did you get there?

Marketing’s Impact on Consumers

Marketing and Culture

Popular culture consists of the music, films, sports, books, celebrities, social media, and other forms of entertainment consumed by the mass market; it is both a product of and an inspiration for marketers. Product icons often become central figures in popular culture.

People often buy products not for what they do, but for what they mean. A consumer will choose the brand that has an image (or even a personality) that is consistent with his or her underlying needs.

What are some products that might be consumed strictly for image?
How does the image of the product enhance your sense of self when you use or consume the product?

Significance of Consumption

People may have various relationships with a product:
a) Self-concept attachment—the product helps to establish the user’s identity.
b) Nostalgic attachment—the product serves as a link with a past self.
c) Interdependence—the product is a part of the user’s daily routine.
d) Love—the product elicits emotional bonds of warmth, passion, or other strong emotion.

Which products do you have a strong attachment for? What is the nature of the relationship? How did this relationship develop?

The global consumer – individuals around the world are united by their common devotion to brand name consumer goods, movie stars, and musical celebrities.

Needs and Wants: Do Marketers Manipulate Consumers?

Marketing is often criticized for trying to convince consumers that they “need” many things that they honestly do not need.

Consumers are becoming more powerful.
Mass media marketspace  Fragmented media consumerspace.

Virtual consumption in a wired world enabled and empowered through social media.

Do marketers create artificial needs? Consider that a need is a basic biological motive and a want represents one way that society has taught us that the need can be satisfied.

Are advertising and marketing really necessary? Why?

Ethics, Public Policy and Consumerism

See the American Marketing Association’s Code of Ethics – www.marketingpower.com

Consumer activism
• Adbusters discourages rampant commercialism – Buy Nothing Day, TV Turnoff Week.
• Culture jamming – see www. sniggle.net
• Consumer disgust with scandals in the corporate world
• Green marketing vs. greenwashing

Social marketing uses marketing techniques normally employed to sell products or services to encourage positive behaviors such as increased literacy and to discourage negative activities such as drunk driving.

The Dark Side of Consumer Behavior

Negative or destructive consumer behavior. Three aspects are:
a) The behavior is not done by choice.
b) The gratification derived from the behavior is short-lived.
c) The person experiences strong feelings of regret or guilt afterward.

Addictive Consumption – a physiological or psychological dependency on products or services

Compulsive Consumption – repetitive shopping, often excessive, as an antidote to tension, anxiety, depression, or boredom.

Consumer Behavior as a Field of Study
• relatively new field
• multi-disciplinary
• for application (applied science) or academic (knowledge for knowledge sake)

Paradigm Shift

From Positivism (modernism) to Interpretivism (postmodernism)

Positivist Interpretivist
Nature of Reality Objective, tangible Subjective, variable, unknown
Goal Prediction Understanding
Knowledge generated Time, context independent Time, context dependent
View of causality Real causes exist Multiple, simultaneous influences
Research More quantitative More qualitative

Positivism emphasizes that human reason is supreme, and that there is a single, objective truth that can be discovered by science. Positivism encourages us to stress the function of objects, to celebrate technology, and to regard the world as a rational, ordered place.

Interpretivism (or postmodernism) questions the positivist assumptions. Proponents argue that the ordered, rational view of consumers denies the complex social and cultural world in which we live. Interpretivists instead stress the importance of symbolic, subjective experience and the idea that meaning is in the mind of the person.

Formulate a PICO question for a research paper.

Can you please help me to formulate a PICO question for my research paper. My topic is uploaded below but my instructor want me to be specific and it should also be in a nursing domain. Instead of weight loss pills it should be something a nurse can do because nurses can not prescribe medication. My population should be specific which I want to use African Americans with a specified age group. I want something that a nurse can do different apart from exercise to make a patient lose weight in the form of PICO question. Just look at the topic and help me fix it. Replace the weight loss pills with something in a nursing domain. Help me fix the question for my instructor to approve then we go ahead and write.

Write a brief (500-1000 words) paper in reckon to one of the three empirical studies assigned as reading in the course.

Written Assignment

Students are required to write a brief (500-1000 words) paper in reckon to one of the three empirical studies assigned as reading in the course (i.e., not the paper by David Adam). This paper is due by 4:00 pm on the day of the class for which the reading is assigned. Assignments must be submited to the course website on Connect as a PDF; neither e-mail nor hard copy will be accepted.

The reckon paper must be written following the QALMRI framework. See the course website for extensive instructions about this approach. I strongly recommend reading about the QALMRI framework well in advance of the due date for the reading assignment. Using this approach will influence how you read the empirical papers, and doing a good job on the assignment will require a bit of Kme.

It may be useful to read chapter 5 of the textbook to refresh your memory about research designs and the type of conclusions that can be drawn from different designs. This step is recommended even if you did well in PSYC 217 and 218. Using the QALMRI approach for your reckon paper will involve applying knowledge about research design to the topic of behavioral disorders.

Late Assignments: Because there are three opportunist to complete the written assignment for this class, late assignments will not be accepted under any circumstances.
