Homework 11
A hiker is carrying a backpack in an upright posture, which its strips create a 15 kilogram force on hiker’s both shoulders with a 20o angle with torso. Calculate the momentum and force on his/her lower back. Assuming that:

– the length of the torso is 55 cm
– the hiker’s weight is 75 kg
– the weight of upper body is about 68% of entire body weight
– the center of gravity for upper body is about 25 cm above the lower back

Discuss Latinos in Los Angeles.

Social Analysis
Question Two
The racial group of interest to me in Los Angeles are Latinos since they appear to be more numerous than other communities are (compared to the rest of the racial minority groups). Latinos comprise 43% of the total population in LA. Members of this particular racial group seem to be distributed evenly in most neighborhoods, from East Los Angeles to Avocado Heights. However, the greatest concentration of Latinos is on the East Side.
Notably, segregation refers to a form of a system where different groups remain separate from each other. The main aim or segregation is to provide special treatment to the group or an individual that has been set aside. Considering the racial composition of Los Angeles 2010, it is expected that Latinos will become less segregated from other groups such as the African Americans, Asians, and those whose origin is from two or more races. More and more immigrants are coming Los Angeles: even though Latinos make up the highest percentage, they will soon be at par with groups such as African Americans.
Question Three
According to surveys conducted in 2010, it was discovered that poor citizens across Los Angeles comprised about 19.1%. The poorest areas of the city are in Belvedere, Lynwood, Compton, Morningside Park, South Gate, and Huntington. Disadvantaged neighborhoods in Los Angeles seem to be near other similar areas such as Augusta-Richmond County, Greenville, Grand Rapids, MI, Atlanta GA, and Winston Salem. The parts of the city considered the poorest are in the eastern portion of the city (where large concentrations of Latinos can also be found).
Poverty concentration refers to a spatial mass of socio-economic deprivation. It is concerned with whether low-income families are dispersed throughout a given population or clustered together in regions of a common economic status. Looking at the 2010 statistics of LA, one can observe that there is the presence of concentrated poverty.
Question Four
Table 1
Neighborhood Name % White % Black % Asian % Latino Medium Income, $ %with BA % with less than HS
East LA 1.5 0.9 5.2 97.1 28,544 0.6 0.3
Fig. A
The neighborhood I chose is the East Los Angeles area, commonly referred to as East LA. It is located to the immediate East of Boyle Heights district. As in 2010, this neighborhood has the largest population of Latinos or Hispanics, with the ratio being approximately 97.1% (as indicated in table 1). The total racial make-up of East Los Angeles is 934. One would expect that whites are the majority of the occupiers in this city, but, as indicated, this is not the case. Whites comprised only 1.5% of East LA, with those from two or more races having about 4.3%. On the other hand, the medium income for a household in this community was $28,544.
In terms of racial diversity, East LA has the largest percentages as compared to other neighborhoods. For instance, while the former comprises of 97% of Latinos (see fig. A), Walnut only has 95%. Additionally, the educational status of those residing in this neighborhood was estimated to be about 12% of those who had graduated high school.
Question Five
The average number of violence and property theft crimes reported in Los Angeles in the last three months was 12 and 26 respectively. Compared to other neighborhoods, Los Angeles has the lowest number of weekly violent and property crimes. Emeryville and Industry cities recorded the highest number of such crimes. The accidents in the last week seem to be clustered in certain parts of the neighborhood, particularly at Lincoln Heights, Exposition Park and Valley Glen. With regard to property crimes, Westwood and Harbor City were the most active areas. It has been observed that most cities with lower crime rates have incomes above average.
Question Six
Charter schools are those that offer some form of institutional hybrid. Similar to conventional public institutions, a charter school is free and cannot discriminate against students for any reason. However, parents are required to submit a separate application to enroll in such a school. This is because, just like a private school, charter schools also have limited spaces. In Los Angeles, there are more charter schools as compared to other regions, with 33 new establishments opening. As of 2014, the number of charter schools in Los Angeles was 1,184. With regard to private schools, there are 1,361 in this particular county. On the other hand, there are 2,261 public schools in Los Angeles. The unified school district, which contains 249 public schools, is ranked as one of the best-performing institutions in terms of Academic Performance Index, falling into an 8/10. About 81 schools are in this neighborhood, with ten of them being a 9 or 10. Overall, schools in Los Angeles seem to be of high quality based on the API. Moreover, many of them are charter ones.
Based on the neighborhood I have chosen, there are a few connections between the racial and poverty composition of the area and its level of social problems in terms of crime and poor schools. Racial minority groups are generally poor as compared to their white counterparts. This is not to say that there are no wealthy racial minority citizens. However, the percentage of poor racial minorities is higher. Finding employment in foreign countries can be quite difficult for such people. Those who are lucky to find any form of employment are paid less as compared to their white counterparts. For this reasons, racial minority groups do not earn as much as they would like to. With respect to crime and poor schools, it is often assumed that minority members commit more crimes as compared to whites.
I agree with this assumption because, given that most of the people from minority groups are poor, they are more prone to commit crimes in order to earn. They are the most deprived and ignored in today’s society. Therefore, most of these racial minorities see crime as a way out of their poverty status. Additionally, these people cannot afford to take their children to better schools and instead opt for those institutions that have low-quality education. Others opt to let their children stay at home and learn the conventional way of how the world operates. With this in mind, it is clear that there is a connection between the racial and poverty composition of a given region and its level of social issues such as poor schools and crime. The explanations provided are structural, not cultural. As mentioned earlier, there are racial minorities who are wealthier than their white counterparts and have also attained good education. Therefore, the link between neighborhood composition, crime and education is not cultural.

Differentiation can be defined as meeting students at their current level of readiness and then planning instruction around individual needs.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) can be defined as “a set of principles for curriculum development that gives all individuals equal opportunities to learn” (CAST, n.d.).

Differentiation can be defined as meeting students at their current level of readiness and then planning instruction around individual needs. When combining these two theories, classroom instruction becomes engaging, dynamic, and inclusive.

Would you describe Marchionne’s behavior as being task-oriented, or people-centered/relationship-oriented?

LEADERSHIP TRAITS, BEHAVIORS, AND STYLES

Case Assignment

One of the most surprising recent success stories in the corporate world is the rapid turnaround of Chrysler under the leadership of CEO Sergio Marchionne.  Chrysler went bankrupt during the 2008-2009 automotive industry crisis and needed a large bailout loan from the government.  But Marchionne exceeded all expectations and not only returned Chrysler to profitability within two years but also managed to repay its loan from the government six years ahead of schedule.

But Marchionne is not your typical CEO.  His approach to turning around Chrysler has been described as “tough love” and his habits of rapidly hiring and firing senior executives has raised some eyebrows.  Simultaneously serving as both the CEO of Chrysler and CEO of Italian automaker Fiat, he is known as a workaholic and micromanager. Marchionne’s leadership style makes for an ideal case study due to his unique personality, and because there is plenty of articles written about him available in the Trident library and on the internet.

Review the background materials on leadership traits, behaviors, and styles.  Then do some research on Sergio Marchionne’s leadership style and personality.  Here are some articles to get you started:

Wernle, B., & Ciferri, L. (2009). Life under Marchionne: New stars, hasty exits. Automotive News, 84(6381), 1-1,42. [Proquest]

2011 All-Stars: Sergio Marchionne. (2011). Automotive News, 86(6492), 28. [Proquest]

Flavelle, D. (2014, Mar 08). CEO aims to steer Chrysler back on track. Toronto Star, Toronto. [Proquest]

Wernle, B. (2010). Inside Chrysler’s Mind. Automotive News, 84(6396), 1-1,19. [Proquest]

Once you are finished with your research on Marchionne and have thoroughly reviewed the background materials on leadership traits, behaviors, and styles write a four to five page paper addressing the following questions. For each answer, make sure to cite at least one of the Case Assignment articles listed on this page as well as one of the required textbook chapters from the background materials such as Avery (2011), Hiriyappa (2009), or Kumar (2009):

  1.  How would you describe Marchionne’s personality and leadership traits?  Refer to the traits discussed in Avery (2011) and Kumar (2009), and consider the common traits listed discussed in these book chapters such as drive, intelligence, integrity, and self-confidence.

  1.  Would you describe Marchionne’s behavior as being task-oriented, or people-centered/relationship-oriented?  Refer to Avery (2011) and the Pearson tutorial in your answer.

  1.  How would you describe Marchionne’s leadership style?  Consider the leadership styles discussed in the “Types of Leaders/Leadership Styles” section of Chapter 10 of Hiriyappa (2010)

Module 2 – Case Due 30-Nov-15

ONE SIZE DOESN’T FIT ALL: SITUATIONAL APPROACHES TO LEADERSHIP

Case Assignment

For this assignment, first review the background materials with a focus on Hersey and Blanchard’s Situational Leadership model.  Make sure you are familiar with  the four leadership styles covered in the situational approach including Directing, Coaching, Supporting, and Delegating and situations where you are supposed to use these four styles.

Also, familiarize yourself with the more complex Path Goal model and Fiedler’s Contingency model. You don’t need to know these two models in as much detail as the Situational model to complete this assignment, but make sure you understand the main idea of these models as well as some of their main advantages and disadvantages.

http://www.pearsoncustom.com/mct-comprehensive/asset.php?isbn=1269879944&id=11603

Now pick up where you left off in Chapter 4 of Avery (2011) and read her perspective on contingency theories:

Avery, G. (2011). Contingency theories: Situations matter, from Chapter 4 of Understanding Leadership: Paradigms and Cases. SAGE Publications Ltd, London, pp. 78-86. [Ebrary]

Since this is a relatively complex topic, make sure to read up more on this topic with the following readings.  Most of these readings are pretty short but they are important:

Kumar, N. (2009). Chapter 14: Leadership.  Organizational Behaviour: A New Look : Concept, Theory and Cases.  Global Media, Mumbai, pp. 274-278. [Ebrary. Note: you don’t have to read the whole chapter just the last few pages]

Once you have finished your reading and research, write a four to five page paper answering the following questions. Make sure to cite at least one of the required background readings in each answer, and to cite at least three of the required readings total in your paper:

  1.  For each of the following situations, explain which of the four leadership styles covered in the Situational model should be used and explain your reasoning with references to Chapter 4 of Avery (2011) and at least one other required reading from the background materials:

  1. You are in charge of a team of architects.  They are highly skilled but have strong opinions and do not necessarily follow instructions.  These architects are independent thinkers who are used to doing things their own way.

  1. You are in charge of a fast food restaurant.  The employees are all teenagers who have not yet graduated from high school, and for most of them this is their first job.
  1. You are the supervisor for a team of software engineers.  They are all highly skilled and highly motivated, and are used to working independently.  All of them believe in the mission of the company.

  1.  For the above situations, how hard would it be to apply the Fielder Contingency model or the Path Goal model to choose a leadership style?  Would it be easy, or would you require a lot more information about each of the situations?  You don’t need to actually apply these two models, just discuss how difficult it might be to apply these models.

  1.  Of the three models (Situational, Fielder Contingency, Path Goal), which one do you think is the most useful for the real world?  Explain your reasoning.

How does your classroom and teaching materials reflect the backgrounds of your students and honor their real-life experiences?

Reflect on the impact of socioeconomic status (SES) on you and your students or the students in your neighborhood school. Write a 2- to 3-page response to the following:

  • Is your socioeconomic status similar or different from the students’?
    • In what ways is it similar or different?
    • How do differences between your SES background and your students’ SES background hinder your teaching?
    • How do you ensure that your perceptions and assumptions do not impede student learning?
    • Does the difference affect the way you teach your students? If so, how?
  • If someone were to visit your classroom or neighborhood school without knowing anything about the school, would the visitor be able to easily identify your students’ SES? Yours?
    • In what ways might this be possible?
  • How does your classroom and teaching materials reflect the backgrounds of your students and honor their real-life experiences?

Note: If you are not currently teaching or you do not identify a difference in socioeconomic standing between yourself and the students at your school, you may either opt to reflect on the materials that were available to you as a student or to complete a Google search for resources you feel would be excellent additions to a particular age/content area classroom.
