Ethical and Unethical Organizations

Discussion 1

Ethical and Unethical Organizations

Organizations can be considered “ethical” or “unethical.” Ethical organizations are those in which leaders adhere to ethical guidelines and engage in ethical conduct while encouraging employees to do the same. When an organization’s leaders do not engage in ethical conduct or encourage employees to do so, the organization may be considered unethical. For example, in 2010, leaders and employees at Toyota committed ethical breaches by failing to disclose and address safety concerns regarding some of their automobiles. Given the unethical conduct of Toyota leaders and employees, many considered Toyota to be an unethical organization.

Pay attention to the need to focus on results, and to commit the organization to achieving those results, in nonprofit organizations.

Think about an institution that fits what these resources and your own assessment would consider to be an ethical institution. Think about what makes it ethical.

Identify an organization (public or private) with which you are very familiar. This organization could be one in which you worked or one with which you are familiar from the news.

Think about the extent to which the organization is ethical.

Submit 150 – 500 word response: Due by Wednesday 11/04/15. a brief description of the organization you selected. NOTE: Do NOT state the name of the organization. Then explain the extent to which the organization is ethical. Provide specific examples to illustrate your explanation.

Support your work with specific citations from the Learning Resources. You are allowed to draw from additional sources to support your explanation, but you must cite using APA standards. All quoted material must be identified, cited, and referenced per APA standards.

How would a university research team evaluate one of your deeply-held beliefs?

How would a university research team evaluate one of your deeply-held beliefs?

Apply at least three of James Lett’s six rules of evidential reasoning (here) to something in your own life that you hold dear.

For help coming up with something to examine with Lett’s rules, check out the Whitbourne article about “Our Superstitious Minds.” Even the heartiest critical thinkers employ “magical thinking” to their lives. It is part of our human condition.

Using fewer than 700 words:

1. Share a practice, belief, or tradition that is important to you. Describe it well enough so that the reader will have no trouble identifying what you are examining.

2. “Attack” your idea using Lett’s rules (at least three of them.)

3. Conclude with a paragraph or two describing how this exercise affected your perspective on the practice/tradition/belief you chose.

Choose your own approach for finding the differences between the two entities. For instance, look at the public entity and draw the conclusion that their organizational mission might be protecting lives or public health, while the privately held organization may have a more central focus on mitigating liability.

Project description
Using the Internet as your primary medium for collecting information, you will be selecting a public and a private entity that you will explore. The purpose of this assignment is to become familiar with both a governmental entity, such as a city, county, or state government, and a privately owned entity, such as a private university or large corporate employer.

This paper is meant to identify their organizational approach to risk management and to compare the two entities. Choose your own approach for finding the differences between the two entities. For instance, look at the public entity and draw the conclusion that their organizational mission might be protecting lives or public health, while the privately held organization may have a more central focus on mitigating liability. Using readings from the text chapters 1&2 (Broder, J. F., & Tucker, E. (2012). Risk analysis and the security survey (4th ed.). Waltham, MA: Butterworth-Heinemann.) compare and contrast at least three separate areas of their respective risk management approaches. The purpose of this assignment is to get you to think about how things may look very similar and may have similar titles on activities like risk management, yet there really are differences that can be compared.
This paper must be in APA format and include a COVER PAGE, ABSTRACT (WITH KEYS WORDS), Discussion, Conclusion, and References. This paper should go beyond the obvious, be written at a graduate level, and must be at least 1,200 words in length. Three resources must be used to support your position. Remember, all resources including, but not limited to, journals, magazines, and/or books must be properly cited using APA style.

write a 500-750 words or 2 to 3 page paper that analyzes the work by discussing how the principles of design are used in it.

Visual Analysis: Choose one of the following works from the textbook and write a 500-750 words or 2 to 3 page paper that analyzes the work by discussing how the principles of design are used in it. For a thorough discussion be sure to include what you’ve learned about the visual elements. To begin, you might make a list of the principles of design and explain how each is used in the work you’ve chosen, then work up your list into essay form.

Chapter content:
Repetition and Rhythm
Although the idea of repetition may at first sound boring, it can actually be a dynamic element in a work of art. In two- or three-dimensional art repetition of design elements is a frequently used principle that activates and articulates the surface. In performance arts, such as music, dance, and theatre, repetition is a presentation, or re-presentation (representation), of the themes of the work. And since performances can be repeated, there is a continual re-presentation of the performance itself. Each re-presentation is different, which means the work is perpetually changing. Therefore repetition in the performing arts equates with dynamic change. It can work much the same in the visual arts with the activation that repetition brings to the composition, resulting in a quality that is much more dynamic than static.

In visual art the repetition of lines, shapes, colors, or patterns creates a visual rhythm that keeps the viewer’s eye moving around the composition. Visual rhythm, which is the repetition of accented elements, works much the same way as rhythm in music: it helps to bind the work together; rhythm creates a thread of unity. Rhythm can be regular or irregular, these terms working somewhat the same as the terms symmetry and asymmetry work when speaking of balance. If the repetition of elements is equal throughout the composition, the rhythm is regular. If the repetition of elements is not equal, then the rhythm is irregular. Besides regular and irregular, some other terms used to describe rhythm are: simple rhythm, alternating rhythms, and progression. All of these terms could apply to music as well.
Unity and Variety
As a principle of design, unity and variety work together. Unity gives the work of art a sense of oneness, of coherence. If a work is unified then the viewer has the feeling that all elements in the composition belong together and make a harmonious whole. In other words, it works. Variety is the differences among elements. Variety is used to avoid the sense that everything is the same or bland, and to provide enough difference so that there are areas of interest and a focal point. There shouldn’t be so much variety that there is disorder or dissonance in the composition.

Unity is achieved in many ways when creating a composition. The first is repetition, the topic at hand. Another is by having one or two elements remain constant while other elements are varied. For example, one shape is repeated, but in a number of different colors and textures. Artists can also create unity by using enclosure, a surrounding element. This can be the edge of the composition or a frame. Enclosure can also mean that the elements of a composition do not direct the eye beyond the frame. If this happens, then the work might loose its unity, but does not necessarily do so. Unity can also be achieved by limiting the number of elements. Simplicity is usually more conducive to unity than complexity.

Variety as a design principle is, in many ways, much easier to accomplish by artists. Introducing variety is simply a matter of varying the colors, shapes, line, textures, and so on. Not only is variety the easier half of the unity-variety principle for the artist, for the viewer it is almost effortless to recognize. For an excellent example of unity and variety look at fig. #6-20, p. 113 Black Face and Arm Unit by Ben Jones.

Complete both parts of this assignment and submit as a single document.

Part One

Based upon recording balance of payment (BOP) transactions, determine whether or not the following is a debit, credit, or no entry to the U.S. Balance of Payment statement. Also determine what chart of account is affected (i.e., CA, KA, or OSB):

1. U.S. resident purchases Mercedes Benz C230,

2. U.S. resident purchases Chevelot Impala,

3. foreigner purchases GE dryer,

4. U.S. resident purchases UK stock, and

5. U.S. resident borrows funds from British broker to purchase stock.

Part Two

Read the case study, pp. 759-762, “H&M: The Challenges of Global Expansion and the Move to Adopt International Financial Reporting Standards.” Answer questions 19-3 and 19-4 at the end of the case study and the questions listed below. Your response for all four questions should be at least three pages in length and follow APA style guidelines. 

What type of exposure could the CFO of H&M in the U.S. be subjected to since H&M is based in Sweden and the financial statements are prepared according to IFRS? 

Payments or liabilities may also be subjected to exposure. Explain the operational hedging strategies that may offset exposure.

Write a program that computes the salaries for a collection of employees of different types.

The first programming project involves writing a program that computes the salaries for a collection of employees of different types. This program consists of four classes. The first class is the Employee class, which contains the employee’s name and monthly salary, which is specified in whole dollars. It should have three methods:

A constructor that allows the name and monthly salary to be initialized.
A method named annualSalary that returns the salary for a whole year.
A toString method that returns a string containing the name and monthly salary, appropriately labeled.

The Employee class has two subclasses. The first is EmployeeOnCommission. It has two additional instance variables that contains the annual sales in whole dollars for that employee, and the commission rate. It should have the same three methods:

A constructor that allows the name, monthly salary, commission rate, and annual sales to be initialized.
An overridden method annualSalary that returns the salary for a whole year. The salary for this type of employee consists of the base salary computed from the monthly salary plus a commission. The commission is computed from the commission rate and the annual sales and has a maximum value of $20,000.
An overridden toString method that returns a string containing the name, monthly salary, commission rate, and annual sales, appropriately labeled.

The second subclass is Executive. It has an additional instance variable that reflects the current stock price. It should have the same three methods:

A constructor that allows the name, monthly salary, and stock price to be initialized.
An overridden method annualSalary that returns the salary for a whole year. The salary for an executive consists of the base salary computed from the monthly salary plus a bonus. The bonus is $30,000 if the current stock price is greater than $50 and nothing otherwise.
An overridden toString method that returns a string containing the name, monthly salary and stock price, appropriately labeled.

Finally there should be a fourth class that contains the main method. It should read in employee information from a text file. Each line of the text file will represent the information for one employee for one year. An example of how the text file will look is shown below:

2014 Employee Smith,John 2000

2015 OnCommission Jones,Bill 3000 .02 100000

2014 Executive Bush,George 5000 55

The year is the first data element on the line. The file will contain employee information for only two years: 2014 and 2015. Next is the type of the employee followed by the employee name and the monthly salary. For employees on commission, the final value is their annual sales and for executives the stock price. As the employees are read in, Employee objects of the appropriate type should be created and they should be stored in one of two arrays depending upon the year. You may assume that the file will contain no more than ten employee records for each year and that the data in the file will be formatted correctly.

Once all the employee data is read in, a report should be displayed on the console for each of the two years. Each line of the report should contain all original data supplied for each employee together with that employee’s annual salary for the year. For each of the two years, an average of all salaries for all employees for that year should be computed and displayed.

Be sure to follow good programming style, which means making all instance variables private or protected when private is too restrictive, naming all constants and avoiding the duplication of code. Furthermore you must select enough different kinds of employees to completely test the program.

Grading rubrics:

25%: requirements (5% for the completion of each class, 5% for the reading of the data from a file, 5% for printing the results correctly)

20%: test data and test documentation. Have 2 different examples of input files. Describe the expected output for each file in a document, and explain how you computed this expected output, independently of your program; just running your program and pasting the results does not count!

30%: code structure (use of proper Java constructs, no code repetition, variables as local as possible)

25%: code presentation. Fully spelled and meaningful names (variables, classes, functions), header comment with your full name and the assignment name, no useless comments (in particular the automatically generated comments), no useless imports, proper code indentation.
