The presidential election of 1912 was the most Progressive in US history, with the two front runners, Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson, both espousing Progressive philosophies. Although both Wilson and Roosevelt were Progressive, their attitudes toward Progressivism differed, at least in theory. This paper will provide an opportunity to review the complex nature of Progressivism, and to explore how presidents’ policies while in office often differ from their rhetoric on the campaign trail.

Using the primary sources below, compare and contrast the two men’s principles based on their writings, and then, using the textbook and at least one secondary source from the library’s JSTOR or Project MUSE databases, compare each presidents’ political principles with his actions while in office—how well did their actions match their rhetoric?

Final Research Paper

For your final paper, you will be picking one aspect or form of media and take an in-depth look at how it has affected our culture and/or how it reflects our culture. This will require you to actually do research, you cannot write this paper from personal opinion only. In fact, you cannot use any first person pronouns (so no “I”, “my”, “me”, etc.).

For now, I need you to pick a topic and find at LEAST 2 sources of information to help you with that topic. You will need at least 3 total for the final paper, but for now, just get me 2. These sources MUST be academic in nature, meaning something that is peer-reviewed, like a book, journal, notable magazine article or notable newspaper (NOT an editorial or something your Aunt Tilly wrote for the local rag, think Times, Post, etc.). At least ONE of these sources must come from an academic journal.

Possible topics could be the following:

~ a media technology, like the iPad and how it has changed how pre-school kids are learning, e-readers and how they have affected libraries around the world, etc.
~ a form of media, like a specific Reality TV series and how it reflects and affects its viewers, political blogs and how they affect our democratic process, etc.
~ a media company, like Apple or Disney and how they affect and reflect aspects of our culture like consumerism or the environment.
~ a media outlet, like Facebook, Twitter, CNN, etc. and how they connect to our cultural values of success, love, or religion.
~a media trend, like mash-ups or memes (either a specific one or the idea of them as a whole)
~ or how media is used by certain corporations to affect our culture, like how fast food companies leverage media aimed at kids to sell their products, or companies use media for PR (good and bad).
~a media theory like agenda setting or spiral of silence and how they can be seen in today’s media marketplace
~how certain forms of media don’t just inform or sell us a product, they sell us a concept for our culture, for example, you could look at billboards for a particular product, like Bud Light, and analyze what else they say about our culture.

This will be a 6-8 page (double spaced) paper looking at how your chosen topic affects and reflects our culture, so pick something you are interested in!

This reflection needs to be 750 words. It doesn’t matter how many source you use. For this reflection, choose a business “disaster” and the leader associated with it. How did they handle the media? How did they address the public? Leverage some of the concepts we explored in the lectures. For example, how were the various stakeholders treated? Did the leader’s response address the issue(s) at hand or make things worse? Did the leader behave in an ethical and moral way? If so, how so and if not, why not? Did the leader’s “stock” of goodwill (say) increase or decrease? Was this incident an example of good (or bad) leadership? Of course, Toronto’s Mayor Rob Ford comes immediately to mind, but look for a business story (vs. a political story) to choose from. For example, earlier this summer, Ed Burkhardt, CEO of Montreal Maine & Atlantic Railway came to Lac Mégantic to address the residents there. This is generally regarded as a case study in how to NOT do public relations. A few years before that (2008), Maple Leaf Foods CEO Michael McCain addressed the company’s listeria issue in which 20 people died after eating tainted product and his leadership approach won him wide praise. You can look elsewhere too. For example, making the news in the US is Kathleen Sebelius (Health and Human Services Secretary) and her handling of the implementation of the Affordable Care Act (so- called ‘ObamaCare’). I would classify this as a business story since it deals with an operational issue (the ObamaCare website) and is not entirely political. There is no shortage of business leaders getting out in front of the public with their stories—find a story, dissect it, and reflect upon the learnings therein.
