The Internet, where people can express their feeling or communicate with each other, weaves uncountable connection for different people with various cultures. One of productions of the internet, social media, yields uncountable avatars. Most people might have an idea that some people whom they communicate with on the internet own the same personality in actual world as in the virtual one. However, some of them might change personality in order to fulfill their curiosity or purpose. In reality, we can hardly change our personality and traits to convert into a totally different people. Even though boundary of actual world restricts human’s behaviors and something unpractical, people can always use the greatest invention, the internet, to satisfy what they want. Social media users attempt to create avatars with distinct personalities form the realty to communicate with others. First, out of curiosity, people change their temper, tones, or even genders to chat with others. They try to experience a feeling of being a person with completely diverse personality, which they cannot possess actually. Through a virtual conversation, we can easily make friends, especially when we change our personality, which need only a slight effort. For instance, when we use different word to chat with someone strange, who will judge us according to what we write and what we think during a conversation. We can pretend to be a millionaire or genius then make friends with those we can hard to know or get along with like the rich. Having said that, not all of them, who try out a different personality on social media, own good intention. Swindlers will pretend to be very nice people and cheat those innocent, who really want to make friends sincerely in this virtual platform. After getting more familiar with the innocent, swindlers will try to fabricate some facts. As an illustration, they might say they lack money to treat their mothers who is seriously ill. Then they are going to ask for money for treatment, which is obviously false. In fact, Social media construct a broad circumstance for people to communicate but its safety must be concerned. People need to concern about those strangers online, whose personality might not be the same as what they actually were. (371)

Analysis Essay Portfolio Project

Analytical writing identifies the elements within a text and describes the relationship among those elements. For example, you can analyze a text in terms of the rhetorical devices an author uses (such as ethos, pathos, logos) or how the text fits into a larger cultural discussion. By examining these elements we determine how logical the thesis is and how effectively it is conveyed to a reader.

This assignment develops critical thinking skills, such as drawing inferences and making conclusions, as they fit into the genre of rhetorical analysis. It also gives you a chance to reflect on shifting issues and attitudes in American culture.

Task:
You will look at a set of two articles, and will break down the article elements to:
• determine how they function
• analyze the strategies the authors use to construct their arguments, focusing on their use of logos, pathos, and ethos
• compare and/or contrast the two articles’ strategies
• evaluate which are successful or unsuccessful, and why, and/or how they fit into a larger cultural discussion

You do not have to discuss all three logos, pathos and ethos strategies in your essay, but you will need to focus on a point of similarity and/or contrast between the articles. Remember the Rhetorical Questionnaire. (Some articles contain a small picture to help sell their points—you can make use of the pictures in your analysis, but keep it brief. Discussion of the pictures cannot take up a large portion of your essay.)

“Today’s Debate” is a section of the editorial page that presents two columns arguing different positions on the same issue. According to their website, “opinions expressed in USA TODAY’S editorials are decided by its Editorial Board, a demographically and ideologically diverse group that is separate from USA TODAY’S news staff. Most editorials are accompanied by an opposing view—a unique USA TODAY feature that allows readers to reach conclusions based on both sides of an argument rather than just the Editorial Board’s point of view.”

In order to be active, responsible citizens, it is important that people are able to navigate these debates, figuring out where different writers stand and determining the major elements of their arguments. This assignment will help you gain this critical skill.

Purposes:
This assignment builds on the moves used to construct persuasive arguments in the last portfolio project. It will also help you work on the critical reading and critical thinking skills we have practiced throughout the semester.

Hints:
An analysis is NOT the same thing as a summary or an argument. Instead of just presenting the main points for each article or using them as evidence to support points to persuade a reader, you are breaking the articles apart, identifying the strategies used to create them, and determining how those strategies further the writer’s purpose for his or her chosen audience.

For this assignment, I want your analysis to emphasize the three major appeals: ethos, pathos, and logos. You must use one or all of these terms correctly in your essay.

Assume that your audience has read the articles. As a result, you do not have to spend much time or space summarizing them. A sentence or two giving the main points should be enough. However, you must draw on specific evidence from the articles to support your points. This means you should paraphrase and quote selectively. The strategies we first learned with the summary/response project will come into play here.

Please write 3-4 pages of analysis on the film (Film: City of God ). NO SUMMARY of the film is needed (or wanted). We want your analysis of the film on issues relating to planning, design, environment, culture, and/or society. Be sure to write a very succinct paper with intro, body, and conclusion. Spend time checking grammar, punctuation, run-on sentences, incomplete sentences, and spelling. Here’s a paper structure hint that you may find helpful:
1. Think of a position on a major planning or related issue you would like to analyze for the movie.
2. Think of 2-4 statements that support your position.
3. In your intro paragraph, clearly state your position (identified in #1) and briefly mention your supporting statements (#2).
4. Each paragraph after your intro should be dedicated to explaining ONE of your supporting statements. You may use specific examples from the movie to provide further support and evidence.
5. Write a concluding paragraph that essentially wraps up your position, and ideally provides sheds sort of new light based on the arguments provided in the body of the paper.

Writing Guidelines and Suggestions

Basics
-Include your name, date, and class title (or professor) at the top of the paper
-Black Ink
-Printed on blank computer paper
-Include page numbers
-Staple, no paper clip
-Times New Roman font size 12 is generally standard.
-Double space
-Paragraphs should be indented
-Do not mess with the standard word processing margins already on the computer

Common grammar errors
-Formal papers do not use contractions (he’s, it’s, can’t, weren’t, etc.). Spell it out
-Make sure subject and verb agree.
-Keep tenses consistent. Do not flip flop between present and past tense at all. If you begin in the present tense stay in the present tense the entire paper.
-Paragraph lengths should be about 3-7 sentences. A paragraph should never be more than ½ a page.
-A new paragraph should be started every time you begin a new idea or introduce a new theme. If you are in doubt it is better to start a new paragraph.
-Sentence fragments are incomplete sentences. One of the easiest ways to connect them is to replace the period with a comma or just delete the period to connect the sentences. For example, “I need to find a new roommate. Because the one I have is not nice” should be written as “I need to find a new roommate because the one I have is not nice, for example.

Style Issues
-Avoid repetition of words or thoughts. If you have said something clearly, the reader will understand your point the first time. Also, do not use the same adjectives or verbs over and over. It is not only boring but makes the writer sound like they have no vocabulary.
-Use words with teeth. In other words, try to find the most descriptive adjectives and colorful verbs that you can. Did the man go to the store or did he sprint to the store? Was the author good or was the author eloquent?
-Overgeneralizations are really just unsupported statements. “Tijuana is all a filthy slum” is not necessarily true unless you back it up by proving that there are absolutely no nice places there. A better statement would be “The majority of Tijuana appears to be mostly filthy slum.”
-If you quote or summarize someone else’s work, cite. This includes any information found on the internet. It does not matter much which citation format you use (MLA, APA, Chicago, ASA, etc.), just as long as you cite.

-FORMALITY. Do not write your paper like you are talking to a friend. Use of slang, jargon, and other informal language is inappropriate when writing academic papers. Write clearly, descriptively, and avoid using clichés. Try not to write in first person or introduce yourself into the paper (best done by avoiding using “I”)

-Some students may not be proficient in English or the language…If this is the case be sure to have native English speakers read over your papers or take your paper to the writing center to go over it with them.
