How does analyzing and critiquing a video help you with writing? Besides being able to practice writing, determining the thinking behind the making of a video and reflecting on its purpose and audience enables you to see why the producers chose the techniques they used. In the same way, when you are given an opportunity to write, the targeted audience and purpose should determine what writing techniques you use in that paper.

Firstly, analyze the video you have selected. (This part of your paper gives your “audience” [a group of your peers] some details about this video.) Break the video down to these basic concepts: audience, purpose, and techniques.

You are to present a local environmental issue or problem, a solution or solutions to the problem, an analysis of the associated COSTS and BENEFITS of the solution(s), and a determination of the best solution(s), based on your analysis of the costs and benefits.

Be sure to not make your topic too broad. It should cover a specific town or area, not the entire world or a country. Please stay away from global warming issues. This is an extremely difficult area to narrow down locally and present reasonable solutions. It is simply much to broad for this type of presentation.

As an example, runoff from a coalmine may be contaminating the groundwater of a nearby town. A solution to abating the contaminated groundwater could be to shut down the coalmine, but at the cost of everyone losing their jobs. A benefit to this solution could be clean drinking water for the community.

There are a host of other costs and benefits associated with the solution to the above example. There are also many alternatives for solutions, none of which would make everyone happy. It is your job to find these costs and benefits for whatever solution(s) you choose and defend your solution(s) to the problem – most likely by choosing the solutions where the benefits outweigh the costs. Remember when considering costs, they go far beyond monetary costs (e.g. loss of jobs, land use, recreation, convenience, etc.)

We have been discussing what literacy means, how it varies among individuals, and how it is ever-changing in our society. In this assignment you will analyze and discuss your literacy history, habits, and processes. The purpose of this reflective analysis is to help you discover your ideas surrounding literacy, namely reading and writing, and to help you gain a better understanding of the readings and research on literacy you will encounter as you complete your final project.

Invention and Drafting

This is a story about you as a writer and reader. To get started on developing your narrative, here are some questions you can ask yourself:

1. How did you learn to read and write?
2. What in your past has made you the kind of writer/reader you are today?
3. What memorable (good or bad) kinds of writing/reading have you done in the past?

Who Is Your Audience?

Your audience is your classmates and myself.   Think about what information you would need to tell them to get the best out of their story. What information would best give your classmates an idea of your literacy history? What information could you possibly keep out? We will be talking more about audience awareness in later classes, but definitely focus in on trying to communicate a narrative that your audience can connect to.

What Makes It Good?

A good literacy narrative is one that tells the story of the writer’s literacy history in an organized fashion. The paper follows a narrative style and the story telling of the paper can be easily followed. The narrative develops a theme that the audience can easily recognize.

Nuts and Bolts

• Your literacy narrative must be 3-4 pages in length. This means a full 3 pages. (Don’t think one sentence on the next page equals a full page). If you do not get a full 3 pages, there will be point deductions. All pages must use 12-point Times New Roman font, be double-spaced, and use 1-inch margins on all sides. All pages must be numbered. You should set your Word specifications to have no extra space between paragraphs (0 pt spacing).
• Don’t think you can get away with making your periods or commas bigger to make your paper longer. I will notice this, and I will count off for it.
• Your paper should be formatted to proper MLA standards. I will show you what this looks like in class.
• Your literacy narrative must have an original title that hints at main ideas, themes, or images in your work. It should be thought-provoking. In other words, your title should not be “Literacy Narrative” or “Assignment 1.”
• You must turn in your peer review draft and peer review worksheet on the day the initial draft is due in class. They must be put in a folder with your name clearly marked on it.   If you are not present for peer review, you will receive a 10 point deduction.
• A word about grammar: Studies have shown time and time again that a preoccupation with grammar or making sure your sentences, paragraphs, etc. are “correct” or “right” gets in the way of articulating ideas. This is a draft, so your ideas should take center stage. That being said, errors should not prevent me from understanding what you’re saying. Take the time to run spellcheck. Disregard anything your grammar check tells you (it’s wrong ~90% of the time). If you’re not sure if something is correct, feel free to use a trusted online source (such as the Grammar Girl website). However, it’s not vital at this point for you to do that. If you have multiple repeated grammar issues, I will note them at the end of your draft. Since your portfolio drafts will need to be more polished, I will expect you to take some time correcting errors.

Learning is determined by a number of factors, some of which are environmental related while others are not. The approach of teaching is one of the major determinants of learning as far classroom learning is concerned, however there has been a concern that the current approaches to learning are a little too abstract. Lack of real life scenarios and too much theory has been responsible for the growing apathy towards learning. It is for this reason that studies are being contacted to see if the change in tact can improve learning. One of the suggested ways is the project based learning approach which uses non fictional concepts for teaching.
Purpose of the study
The purpose of this study is to find out the effects of in cooperating project based learning in the school curriculum. The study seeks to ascertain if there is any relationship between projects based learning and the improvement in scores for students (Daniel 2012). Previous studies have shown that students are likely to improve in cases where some form of simulation or use of no fictional material. According to these, the use of non fictional approaches stimulates the students to look at issues from the reality perspective hence making it easy to internalize whatever they are learning for the sake of being able to remember, however these studies have not clearly explained the actual relationships that exist between the performance and the project based learning. There are other factors which could have in for the findings to be so, for those studies, this study would critically examine the direct impact that project based learning has on students.

In research, data is an important factor because it is the one which determines the findings and recommendations for the, decisions to be made (Peter 2011). The main data collection methods will be observation, interviews and artifacts, questionnaires will also be used to collect data concerning the stakeholders. Observation will be effective tools for confirming how students behave in classes, when the various approaches are used. Students will be observed in a classroom setting and comparisons be made between those classes that implement project based learning and those that do not. Interviews will be conducted among teachers to confirm is they have a different opinion between those who have experienced various approaches so that they can give their views concerning the project based learning. The use of artifacts for learning is important because it confirms the practicality of the approaches that are learnt.
Data collection tools are developed based on the forms of data which is expected, for example if a questionnaire is to be developed for quantitative data, and then the same cannot be used for qualitative information because the format would be different. Data collections also determine how much money would be spend on the study because the cost in terms of time and money are important when it comes to budgeting (James 2009) .
Value of Collected Data
The selected data will inform the researchers on the best methods to choose the way to learning. Data from questionnaires will be analyzed such that the findings can be used to make recommendations, on which actions would be taken. As for interviews the teachers who have experience in teaching the conventional way and the project based way would help to study and make comparisons in order to come up with the approach that works.
Observation will be crucial and valuable because of the fact that it would it is one of the most accurate and reliable way of making sure that the there is reliability. Observation is also good because it does not provide biases for the person collecting, since the students are likely to be themselves unlike situations which provide an opportunity for students to pretend. Data cannot be valuable is it is not well managed. Proper data management ensures that cleaning and coding are done to the full and also the process of analyzing the data is the correct one. Data collection methods determines the way in which the data will be analyzed because of the format.

While some IR scholars believe that globalization is leading to the “erosion of the state,” others believe that the nation-state will continue to remain the most important actors in the international system.
