Nutritional case study, must use at least three (3) full text peer reviewed journal articles. References must be recent (in the last 10 years). Additionally at least two (2) textbook sources should be used. It is about sport nutrition so energy systems, fuels and nutrients to support activity. Analysis of the current diet is also required (insufficinet protein, alcohol, contraceptives could cause deficinecies). Anthea is nearly 18 years of age and has come to you for help in preparing for her first triathlon in 12 weeks time. Whilst Anthea is pretty fit and exercises regularly, this is a special challenge and will require a big increase in effort, training and fitness (and a few less big nights out). Up until now, her exercise regime has been 3 spin, cycle or cardiobox evening classes per week, and on the weekends she will often go for a big run/ride or hiking in the bush. Anthea has just started with a personal trainer who is devising a training schedule for her: ? Cardio training – 5 mornings for 45-60minutes (cycling, jogging, cross-training) ? Resistance/weights – 3 evenings per week for 45 minutes ? Long training session – on Saturday, mainly ride or jogging followed by long stretching session ? Recovery day is Sunday. The intensity will build leading up to the event, with a lighter schedule for 5 days prior to the event. Anthea works regular hours (8.30-5.00) in administration for the local council and lives with 2 girlfriends in rented accommodation. The girls generally try to eat a healthy diet as following is fairly typical for Anthea: Breakfast 2 slices of wholegrain toast with avocado Toasted muesli with skim milk Mid-morning Piece of fruit Lunch A wrap (white flour) and plain salad Sushi once a week Dinner Salad with fish (crumbed, frozen, in packet from supermarket) or chicken breast Nachos (no sour cream) guacamole Vegetable stir-fry and rice Pasta with tomato and mushroom sauce (a favourite, has at least weekly) If she gets really hungry, she sometimes binges on sour jelly lollies. Anthea currently drinks about 1.5 litres of water per day. She doesnt like coffee but has about 2 or 3 cups of tea a day (with skim milk, no sugar). On weekends she and her friends usually go out Friday and Saturday nights and she might have between 6 and 8 drinks. She wont be doing this whilst training (she is trying to get her housemates to join her in the triathlon to help keep on the straight and narrow). Anthea doesnt like big slabs of meat and the idea of something like a T-bone steak makes her feel squeamish, however she doesnt mind beef stir-fry or mince, or where the meat is cut up. She doesnt like pork, veal, red/orange vegetables, pineapple or asparagus. She has no allergies, takes the oral contraceptive pill and the occasional dissolvable B vitamin if she has a hangover. She has no significant medical or surgical history. Anthea is 168cm and weighs 70.3kg; her body fat is 26%. Specific questions relating to the case study The following questions relate to Anthea in the first 8 weeks of her training program and do not include the specific pre-event preparation. 1 With consent, analyse Antheas current diet. What are its strengths and weaknesses for someone living her current life (i.e. not including the triathlon training she is about to commence)? 2 Analyse Antheas diet in view of the increased training she is about to commence. What are your top 3 treatment priorities? 3 Provide Anthea with tips for pre-workout nutrition. 4 Provide Anthea advice of what to eat and drink during both a 1-hour and a 5-hour workout sessions 5 Provide Anthea with tips for post-workout nutrition. Describe the key goals of post-training nutrition, and include suggestions what to eat and when. 6 Provide a sample diet for 1 day for Anthea, including snacks and timing of food to work and exercise. Explain why you have chosen the foods you have and why you have timed them as you have.
