Secondary sources describe, discuss, interpret, comment upon, analyze, evaluate, summarize, and process primary sources. Secondary source materials can be articles in newspapers or popular magazines, book or movie reviews, or articles found in scholarly journals that discuss or evaluate someone else’s original research (Ithaca College Library).
Possible primary sources for our class include: Herodotus, Thucydides, Sappho, Aristophanes, Plato, Aristotle, Arrian, Livy, Sallust, Plutarch, Cicero, Julius Caesar, Tacitus, Suetonius, Polybius, Virgil, Procopius, Fulbert of Chartres, Ibn al-Athir, the Domesday Book, St. Francis and St. Clare of Assisi, Dante Alighieri, Geoffrey Chaucer, and William Shakespeare.
Also: The Hebrew Bible, the New Testament, and the Quran can be used as primary sources as religious texts. Along with Martin Luther and John Calvin for the Reformation. Tips:
Include dates- It is important for historical papers to have dates of events, the dates of birth and death of people you discuss, primary sources, etc. Ex: Julius Caesar (100-44 B.C.E.) was the founding member of the First Triumvirate formed in 59 B.C.E.
Use full names of people you discuss, along with the historians/authors you use in your paper, i.e. Modern historian Terry Buckley discusses
Do not use contractions: use did not, not, didnt; use would not, not, wouldnt.
History is in the past, you should use the past tense when writing your paper. Ex: Use was, were, had, etc.
Read over your paper. You can catch and fix grammatical errors, like spelling, and formatting issues if you look over your paper after you are finished. Spell check does not catch all of the errors. Also it can be helpful if you have someone else read over your paper as well, like fellow students, parents, or the writing center on campus.
Remember to include your sources in your works cited page and in your in-text citations. At least one primary source is needed for your paper. You can pick whatever topic you want in our timeline.
