This assignment will give you a chance to practice asking a research
question, coming up an answer (a thesis), and supporting your thesis with
evidence. By completing this assignment, you will:
Develop a better understand of how to conduct scholarly research and
how to critically evaluate sources of evidence.
Develop broad, transportable skills that are required in any branch of
university work, including: analytical, expository writing and/or
capacities for effective oral communication; careful, critical reading;
analytical and critical reasoning.
Develop a better understanding of language and culture and what it
means to be human.

Research and critical thinking are two fundamental skills necessary for all
career paths. No one is born knowing how to conduct research or to be a
critical thinkerwe all must learn these skills and continue to practice them
throughout our lives. This means that everyone can become a fantastic
researcher and critical thinker! Since conducting research and coming up
with persuasive arguments are the cornerstones of Anthropological work,
our class provides us with the perfect opportunity to practice and build
those skills.
Your assignment will require:
Research on a relevant topic
Asking a question that reflects a debate (open-ended)
Coming up with a thesis/argument
Presenting and analyzing relevant evidence
Must have at least 2 scholarly sources
One source can be your textbook or an article from our
reader
One source you must find on your own, and it cannot be an encyclopedia, a generalized website (such as CNN or Wikipedia) but must be written by the scholar who conducted the research
Instructions
There are two options for completing this assignment: a paper or a
presentation.
Paper:
4-5 double-spaced pages, using a standard essay structure
complete with bibliographical citations. Your paper must explicitly
discuss your research question, your argument, and a thorough
analysis of the evidence you have found to support your argument. If
you write a paper as a group, each group member is responsible for
writing about the evidence they discovered. The paper must include a
bibliography and must be formatted using either APA or Chicago
