Two standards that are the same between the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), and the Ethical Principles & Professional Practice Standards for Special Educators (CEC) are: Promoting meaningful and inclusive participation of individuals with exceptionalities in their schools and communities.
Developing relationships with families based on mutual respect and actively involving families and individuals with exceptionalities in educational decision making.
Both the NAEYC, and the CEC have overlap when they are encouraging respecit for differences and supporting inclusion, and the emphasis on developing relationships with families is one of the cornerstones of both the NAEYC and the CEC. I believe that these two ethical standards guide and inform our professional practice. What stood out for me was that they have far more similarities than differences. However among these two ethical standards some differences I noted were: the NAEYC makes specific reference to curriculum which focuses on the areas of social/emotional development, while the CEC does not put a specific emphasis on curriculum. I know that the NAEYC advocates for young children to have curriculum that is developmentally appripriate which places a specific emphasis on the importance of play for young children, while the CEC standards place an emphasis on evidence based instructional data to inform practice.
