Part One Narrative Teacher candidates must address the four factors below in an outline form to help them observe secondary special education teaching practices. During these hours of fieldwork, candidates should note indications of planning and preparation, instruction, management, and teacher professional responsibility. A: Community, District, and School Factors Address geographic location, community population, socio-economic status, race/ethnicity, and school profile. You might also address such things as stability of community, political climate, community support for education, and other environmental factors. B: Classroom Factors Address physical features, availability of technology equipment and resources and the extent of parental involvement. C: Pupil Characteristics Use teacher interview and first-hand observations to address student characteristics, age, gender, race/ethnicity, special needs, achievement/developmental levels, culture, language, interests, learning style/modalities or students skill levels. If the IEP is available this additional information may be used to supplement the above characteristics. Focus on the transition needs and age-appropriate instruction of adolescents with special needs. If supported and competitive employment is implements by sure to include any observations related to work experiences. Teacher candidates are encouraged to visit the worksites. D: Ethical and Professional Responsibility Address PL 94-142 (IDEA) and its subsequent revisions compliance as well as accommodation of Section 504 and ADA as observed in the classroom. Also note RTI as appropriate. As part of your professional practice you will be communicating with and collaborating with parents please note any parental contact that was observed. Include of your observations in based on professional (staff) development meetings, CSE meetings, transition meetings, grade-level meetings, or faculty meetings. Part Two Reflective Essay and Critical Analysis Teacher candidates must reflect on their fieldwork observations using the information they provided in Part One to self-assess with specific examples, how their fieldwork experience can inform and enlighten their own teaching. Reflect on ethical and professional responsibility as it relates your own professional development.
