Using the dialogue, provide a thorough account of the nature and function of Forms and Platos reason for positing them.3) The ancient title of the Phaedo is On the Soul, signalling the focus of the dialogue: the nature and function(s) of the human soul. Provide a detailed and thorough reconstruction of Platos account of the soul in the dialogue.4) In Republic I, Thrasymachus provides a controversial and complicated account of the nature of justice. What is Thrasymachus account? Does such an account meet Socrates criteria, familiar from other dialogues, for an adequate definition? Why/why not? Is there a way of understanding Thrasymachus account that allows it to avoid the strictures of Socrates criteria? Why/why not?5) Glaucon places constraints in Republic II on Socrates account of justice: as well as presenting justice as a certain kind of good, the account must be able to meet the burden of showing how a person who is completely just, but nevertheless appears and is reputed to be unjust, is nevertheless better off and happier than a person who is unjust, but nevertheless appears and is reputed to be just. Provide an account not only of the constraints on music and poetry involved in education, but of the purpose of these constraints: why are they needed and what sort of impact are they expected to have on the souls of the young? 7) Explain in detail why and in what way the Kallipolis is wise, courageous, moderate, and just, as Socrates insists in Republic IV.
