APA or MLA style is fine.Style: You do not need to write in a ‘formal’ essay style. For instance, you do not need to have a formal introduction or conclusion, and you may write in the first-person. (If you want to say “I think that…” rather than “One would think…” that’s fine.) But please use proper grammar and spelling. Please try to avoid very long and complicated sentences, unless you are sure your meaning is clear. In general, it’s best to try to write a paper of this kind using clear and simple language. If you are using technical terms or jargon, be sure to offer some kind of explanation or definition of these terms. In general it’s a good idea to read your essay out loud, or have someone else read it. You’d be surprised how easy it is to write an essay that makes sense to you, in your head, but which makes little sense to you when you hear it! Also be careful to make it clear when you are reporting someone else’s ideas as opposed to stating your own views. The reader needs to be able to tell the difference.Do not use any sources other than the relevant course readings–those mentioned in the essay question. This is not a ‘research’ paper: you aren’t expected to survey the history of ideas or the state of the current literature on the topic. Rather, the goal is for you to read one or two of these essays and think carefully, on your own, about the arguments presented, and then tell me what you think: explain and evaluate the reasoning of the author(s) under discussion, and defend your own opinion with reasons.Plagiarism is a serious academic offence.
