Research Paper (80%) The second assessment of this module is a 3,000 words independent research paper that constitutes 80 per cent of the overall mark. The research paper will offer students an opportunity to undertake independent research by applying appropriate feminist perspectives to an empirical topic of their choice. Please note that the topic and research question needs to be negotiated and approved by the tutor before the oral presentations. Instructions ? Choose a research question in consultation with the tutor? Make an essay plan where you think about how you will go about answering the question? Read the relevant academic literature within the broader field of research that the question and topic speaks to. ? Write an essay that demonstrates that you have read the relevant literature; that develops a powerful argument in answer to the chosen essay question. Importantly, you must explain how you understand gender and how and why gender matters for your particular topic. ? On the Writing section of the Effective Communication module you will find detailed guidance on what is expected of an academic essay submission. What we are looking for (Assessment criteria): Content: You need to demonstrate that you have understood key academic concepts and ideas relevant to the essay question. In an academic essay the way you do this is by referencing academic texts. You should not express your opinion on a particular matter but build up your argument by referencing academic texts. Basically, you need to demonstrate that you have read suggested literature and learnt something on this module. Also, this might be an obvious point but please dont forget to answer the question! Style: All essays need to be typed (font size 12, double spaced), include a bibliography and use the Harvard-referencing system. The essay should also be well-written and well-structured (see below). It is important that you write in full sentences and avoid bullet-points. There is also no need to include tables, images, maps etc. Instead, a discussion of and reference to such items is sufficient. See below for more information on academic referencing. Structure: A common essay-structure has three main sections in addition to introduction and conclusion. Please include headings and sub-headings in order to guide the reader through the argument/answer to the question. Remember that the way you structure the essay is part of how you answer the question; it needs to make sense.
