Lewins change management theory also known as Lewins Force Field Analysis, is helpful in understanding the human behavior during a change and its relationship to possible resistance to a change. The sole purpose of the theory is to identify ways to prevent resistance to change. Kurt Lewins change management theory structure can be used as a guide in the implementation of this in the clinical and family practice setting. Lewins theory can provide nursing support through the transitional process, while identifying areas that need strengths, as well as nurse resistance. According to Sutherland, without a proper framework to guide the change, the implementation of advanced technologies may result in nurses using workarounds which will increase the errors that were being addressed.
The theory is composed of three phases. Unfreezing, during this phase the problem identified, development of strategies begins. The moving phase starts the change in nursing practice with support. The implementation of a change produces its desired effect. Refreezing is used to evaluate the change and modify where needed.
